I think the spurs made the right call at the time and given the knowns in front of them. We have no way of knowing what Boston was seriously offering, and this reeks of spin especially after Tatum had a down season.
The revisionist history going on of the Leonard trade is frustrating though. Obviously Leonard is a beast and no matter where he went his new team was going to be a finals contender. Like no Sherlock. It’s not like the spurs wanted to move him. But he put the team in an untenable situation, and once the team made the call to move on they got the best deal they could in my view. I don’t agree with folks saying that they should just have just kept him and forced him to play his deal out — he was leaving and you have to get some return.
This saga isn’t over if DDR is moved this summer. If the spurs are able to flip him, we’d have to judge the whole deal again based on that return.
