This is a exactly what so many on this board keep alluding to and why so many of us are pissed. We don’t have proof, but have seen the behavior of PATFO for years that matches this theory. The injury mishandling just broke the camels back.

The “culture” signings to the detriment of the team are a real thing. And Pop himself said he would prefer Kawhi to only average between 22-24 points a game. Who ing does that to their superstar?! Tim and Manu were an anomaly. With all the winning, Pop got drunk on his ability to get them to do whatever he wanted.

He doesn’t care about winning as much anymore as many on this board can see from a mile away. It’s all about “muh culture” these days.

The guy and his ego have just become bigger than the team and nobody has the balls to tell him to straighten the up or retire. He shouldn’t be fired because of his legacy. But he should be strongly urged to retire.

I root for the San Antonio Spurs, not the San Antonio Pops.
    Truth bomb of epic proportions.

How ironic that the guy who always demanded that others "get over themselves" eventually became so self-absorbed that he started to believe his own legend.

Damn. It's really kind of sad when you think about it. Raptors have discovered key leadership qualities in Kawhi that went undetected/underappreciated in San Antonio because of his subtle personality. Shame that a coach privileged with Tim Duncan for 20 years couldn't recognize the value of Leonard's leadership-by-example.

Kawhi's in a position now where his team is eager to listen and follow his lead, and patient in doing so. Appears Pop's cultural hierarchy wasn't the best place for him after all, tbqh.

The guy sounds like an asshole, what a prick. Glad he's gone.

What pearls of wisdom are LMA and DeMar passing when our team is getting bounced in the first round once again? At least we have spiritual and team leader Patty "Wombat" Mills serving the Starbucks coffee.
Pop: fall in line, there isn’t any basketball anymore.

Kawhi: go out there and enjoy the moment.

Clearly the former is a philosophy I want to follow.

The leader insult from Pop was just his way of lashing out at Leonard and his group. Pop's idea of a leader is someone that follows the chain of command, military style. Independent thinkers are not embraced under military doctrine. This is why players like Rodman, SJax, Dedmon, and Simmons never lasted more than two seasons in SA. Pop and Robinson implemented this structure in the 90s, both coming from military backgrounds. They were extremely fortunate they lucked into drafting TD - the most laid back/adaptable superstar in NBA history. Pop couldn't surround him with American-born players - too independent as was the case with Derek Anderson. He opted for Euros like Manu and Parker, guys who didn't want to rock the boat and stifle their pro career so they did as they were told. Euro players have always been loyal and subservient. Dirk taking a paycut for Cuban. Boban wanting to sign for less just to stay on the Spurs - Pop had to beat him with a stick just to get him to accept that big Detroit offer. This was an extremely successful formula while the big three were in their prime. The rest of the league caught up and began targeting Euros. This coincided with the decline of the big three. Spurs were no longer le contenders and it became more and more difficult to reload with late picks when everybody was targeting the same guys.

Kawhi changed things almost immediately. It's not often that a Spurs rookie breaks into the starting lineup but Kawhi did what only Parker and Duncan did before him . Spurs fans would have been thrilled if Kawhi ended up becoming another Gerard Wallace(3&D player was a team need with Bowen's departure). He exceeded those expectations immediately when it became apparent he was the 2nd most important player on the team during the Finals in only his sop re season.

The Kawhi fiasco was a major snag in their culture and philosophy though. They thought they'd developed the next Duncan - the quiet humble superstar that would fit in perfectly under this rigid military structure. They miscalculated badly. For example, they thought those HEB commercials were funny and helped build the family culture in the Spurs. Kawhi and his group took it personally. His rivals like Harden, Durant, and Lebron were getting endorsements that propped them up and sold their brand. Kawhi, instead, was made to look like a re in those corny HEB ads. He was the butt of the joke every time.

PATFO's inability to adapt with the times and embrace the NBA superstar culture cost them badly. From all reports, they still haven't learned their lesson as we've seen no accountability from the people up top. Their idea of a fix was a bandaid solution - hire a team photographer. You know it's a sinking ship when everyone but the sycophants want out. Just a few days ago, Udoka opted to leave SA for another assistant coaching position, a lateral move but he gets to work with a promising young core in Philly. A player development coach like him is wasted in SA, a retirement home for the unwanted losers of the NBA like LMA, Derozan, Rudy Gay, Bellinelli, Patty Mills, Cunningham, Pondexter, etc. Spurs will continue to suffer from this brain drain as the talented people in the organization depart for brighter pastures, while the ass kissers cling on, hoping to outlast Pop for the easy guaranteed head coaching position.

    1. All those guys you mention are malcontents that couldn't last long term in any environment without causing disruption.
    2. #2 may very well be the best player in the league right now but lets not get carried away about the Spurs hurting his brand. His brand suffered mainly because he has zero personality along with charisma. I have never seen a superstar with 0 personality/charisma be a big time endorser. I can't see that happening with #2. He's always going to be unintentionally the butt of jokes in any commercial he does simply because he's socially awkward. That's not going to change anywhere he goes. By the way he still gets cracked on from his awkward post game interviews.

He's getting more respect and adulation in Toronto than he ever has in SA. That same lack of charisma which made him the butt of jokes in SA, has been emphasized in Toronto as a quality of mystery and strength: The Terminator, The Machine, The Quiet Assassin and so forth and so on. This will be his trademark going forward, and it's going to be big.

Riddle me this. If Durant, and perhaps Thompson, leave the Warriors, what will the Warriors have available to offer Kawhi, to play alongside Curry?
Steph, Draymond and Iggy already account for $75mm of salary, so with a cap of $109 million and the entire rest of the roster accounted for with minimum roster holds of $500k (I know it’s a bit higher, but good enough for this math), that puts them at under $30mm starting salary for Kawhi.

Probably would have to be done via a sign and trade.

He’s also only one ring behind Lebron and he’s like 6 years younger.

I said before and I'll say it again, this thread is one of the most entertaining places on the Internet

Some of y'all start talking before the game even starts, just to be shut up by Kawhi immediately afterwards, it's too funny

Y'all need to just accept the fact the Spurs traded one of the best players of this Generation all becuz PATFO didn't know how to handle the Modern NBA American Superstar.

Yer that was good, right down to TD on the t-shirt. But yer that China trip really clouded the pond. After China the whole saga was like one of those fish ponds with those orange coloured carp swimming in the blackened water under the lillies or a backed up crapper with one that won’t flush and you need a crowbar to break its back tbh..... sad really. Anyhow better the Raptors than some of the ass clowns we could have sent him to tbh....

I'm willing to give Pop and the franchise the benefit of the doubt given we have been the winningest franchise in the last 20 years. Sure you can say we lucked into it by getting Duncan if you want but there has been great players in the past that haven't had the same success as the Spurs. Nevertheless, despite everything, I think we are in good shape and I'm sure Pop and RC learned a lot of lessons during this saga and regret their role in losing a franchise talent. I'm highly optimistic about our young guys and believe we will be contending in the near future.

    Kawhi revenge tour.

Takes out 2 former Spurs coaches in the Eastern playoffs, another former Spur in Kerr, and gets to punish the team that ZaZaed him.
