Fansided: Old North Banter NBA Mock Draft: Zion goes first, Culver goes fourth
by Joseph Ochoa 40 minutes ago [AKA 19 June 2019]

    19
    Mfiondu Kabengele
    C Florida State
    San Antonio Spurs

Current Spurs center LaMarcus Aldridge has had a problem fitting into Gregg Popovich offense from the moment he arrived in San Antonio and I think the main reason the Spurs will take the Florida State big man here. Kabengele has the potential to be a defensive powerhouse much in the same way Rudy Gobert has become for the Utah Jazz. He improved his stats from during his two years with the Seminoles and could be one of those mid-to-late first round gems Popovich seems to find during this stage of the draft.
    29
    Luguentz Dort
    SG Arizona State
    San Antonio Spurs

With DeMar DeRozan turning 30 soon and Marco Bellinelli already over 30, it would be prudent for the Spurs to take a younger shooter to give them some youth in the backcourt. As we mentioned before, Popovich is a master at finding talent late in the draft and Dort can be a solid contributor off the bench before he becomes a starter. He isn’t the most efficient shooter and struggles from beyond the arc, but the talent development in San Antonio since Pop has been there is one of the best in the league and can mold him into an all-star caliber player.

    Dime Magazine:
NBA Mock Draft 2019: One Final Look Before The Big Night
    Brad Rowland 06.19.19

    19. San Antonio Spurs – Luka Samanic (F/C, Croatia)

The Spurs are always tricky to draft for but Samanic makes a ton of sense. He stretches the floor as both a shooter and a passer, operating with impressive basketball IQ and awareness for a young player. There are weaknesses, particularly if you don’t believe in his defense, but this is a marriage of player and team that is easy to embrace.
    29. San Antonio Spurs (via Toronto) – Chuma Okeke (F, Auburn)

Okeke may not land in the first round, in part due to the ACL injury he suffered during Auburn’s NCAA Tournament. From a talent perspective, though, he’s one of the 30 best prospects in this draft. In San Antonio, Okeke would be maximized under a creative coaching staff and there wouldn’t be a ton of urgency to rush him back to the court before he was ready to go.

NBC Sports: NBA: NBA Mock Draft 7.0: The final mock before the draft starts
By Rob Dauster Jun 19, 2019, 1:30 PM EDT

    19. San Antonio — GOGA BITADZE, Georgia

The Spurs have some solid pieces on their perimeter, but with an again LaMarcus Aldridge anchoring their frontline, it’s time for a rebuild there. Enter Bitadze, who was impressively productive in the Euroleague and whose combination of shot-blocking and floor-spacing is intriguing.
    29. San Antonio — LUKE SAMANIC, Serbia

For all the reasons that Bitadze makes sense in San Antonio, Samanic does as well.

The Spurs lack depth at power forward and with LaMarcus Aldridge quickly approaching his mid-30s (he'll turn 34 in July), they should turn to the future. Hachimura has guard skills but can play either forward spot, and his compe iveness could give him an edge to play early.

The Spurs need also to address their depth at center, where Jakob Poeltl and Drew Eubanks were both stretched past what they should have been last season. Fernando can be an instant impact player at the position who can bring intensity, rebounding and a physical post presence that would play well off LaMarcus Aldridge.
    Jaylen Nowell SG

The Spurs' success over the years has come largely as a byproduct of success in the draft. Getting Nowell would continue that. He was the best player in the Pac-12 last season and was one of the big risers in the pre-draft process after a really strong combine showing.

    19. San Antonio Spurs — Rui Hachimura

    6-8 forward, junior, Gonzaga

The Spurs are a tight-knit group, so it’s always hard to guess their plans. But in conversations with other teams, I’m starting to wonder if they’re the team who has assured Hachimura of their interest, with Wasserman holding him out of workouts and the combine to try and float him down to No. 19. It’s easy to understand why an agency would want their client to be in San Antonio, given their tremendous developmental track record. Additionally, they’ve dealt with international players regularly, and would obviously be very capable in dealing with the unique environment that is the first Japanese basketball star. Given Hachimura’s marketability off the floor, fit is always going to be more important than how high he goes. He’ll make that money up with ease in Japan.

It’s also worth noting that the Spurs are thought to be interested in Goga Bitadze. The team tends to stand pat where it is on draft day, though. It’s an extremely unlikely occurrence that both Bitadze and Hachimura would be available at 19, so these ideas aren’t mutually exclusive.

Hachimura fits positionally for their long-term future at the 4, as an elite frame guy at 6-8, 240 pounds with a 7-foot-2 wingspan. He’s also skilled, with a first step that is terrific for a man his size, and it allows him to get to the basket. As a shooter, there’s a hitch at the top of his release to fix, but his touch is pretty good and at least portends some potential — but he needs to get more confidence from beyond the arc. Defensively, he possesses potential due to his strength and length, although sometimes his feet get a bit stuck in the mud at times and his feel on that end isn’t particularly strong after his prep years of being the primary offensive option with little defensive accountability until he reached Gonzaga. This year, things started to click a bit more on that end, but it remains an open question as to whether or not Hachimura will defend.

    29. San Antonio Spurs (from TOR) — Luka Samanic

    6-10 forward/center, 19 years old, Petrol Olimpia

This is a critical draft for the Spurs as they continue to fill out the younger side of their roster. They have three picks, including two first rounders. With the backcourt of the future looking set with Dejounte Murray, Derrick White and Lonnie Walker, the team can look toward the frontcourt to try and find players that fit the Gregg Popovich and R.C. Buford mold. Samanic is the kind of high IQ, high skill player that tends to work there, and he worked out in San Antonio a couple weeks ago. I’d say that right around here is the start of his range, but he’ll likely be taken somewhere in the first round. Offensively, he’s a smart pick-and-roll player who can find the soft spot in the defense and make plays both shooting it and passing it. On defense, he’s versatile enough to guard on the perimeter, and has improved his bulk enough to not get completely overpowered inside. Depending on who is still available at 19, I think Samanic could legitimately be in play there, too.

    49. San Antonio Spurs — Jontay Porter

6-11 center, 19 years old, Missouri

The Spurs were big fans of Porter last year, and still value big men at a level commensurate with taking two of them in the same draft. He’s suffered two straight ACL tears, but when he’s on the floor Porter displays a high level of IQ and terrific potential shot-making ability above the break. Much in the same way as Reid, his smooth shooting stroke has real potential to warp defenses, as does his passing ability. But to get a chance to do that, he has to get a clearance from NBA doctors and get back on the floor.

I have a feeling there will be some people who get the 19 and 29 correct but will get it wrong with the 49th pick. Anyways here are my guesses based on mocks:

    19. Kevin Porter
    29. Grant Williams
    49. Adam Mokoka

This guy is stealing my stuff, lol - noticed this immediately when scouting youtube video of him.

The one thing I noticed that needs to be corrected -- he has a hitch at the top of his release point which caused a couple of his late game shots get blocked.

At 49, he would absolutely be worth the risk. If he manages to come back from the injury and comes anywhere near his potential, I don't think he's loyal to the Spurs for giving him a shot. But there's a lot of talent there for a 49 pick.

I am still hoping that we can get Okeke. I would rather have him at 29 than Porter at 49, and limit our MASH unit to one body.

Did you mis-type or get auto-corrected on the bit about not being loyal to the Spurs?

They swear he measured 6'5 1/2" at USA Camp last year, which translates into 6'7" with shoes which is the way everyone is listed on rosters. They also swear that he weighed in at 285, but I can't see an ounce of fat on him. I don't get it.

He also broke Duke's all-time vertical jump record. There's a video of him at Duke's combine, where he maxes out their Vertec, with some to spare. I don't know where the bottom was set, but he clearly jumped higher than they expected.

I was replying to a comment about Jontay Porter. And I'll be the first to admit that I don't know about the kid personally. But I've seen and read a few interviews. I got the idea that he knows how talented he is/was, and was pretty full of himself and thought he was a better player than his brother. If he's never had an injury, he probably would have been at least a lottery-level talent, if not in the upper part of the lottery. So if he comes back from the injury and plays up to the promise of his talent, he would be an incredible steal... but less so if he immediately started courting big market teams, and the money he should have been en led to.

Like I said, I don't know anything - that's just a lot of reading between the lines on my part. But I still think it's another risk factor in drafting him. You can't really worry about stuff like that, though.

I hadn't really thought about it, but you're right. Drafting two gimps in one year seems a bit reckless. I guess if they both pay off, it would be a real win though.
