Though Kawhi Leonard has been gone for a year, the Spurs have a lot at stake with where he signs.
If he signs with an LA team, especially the Lakers, they’re vindicated. He would have walked away from not one, but two championship franchises and crapped all over them in the process. The Spurs can say that there was nothing they could have done and everything that happened was on Kawhi.
But if he stays in Toronto... NBA players don’t exactly flock there. Kawhi goes back to looking like the guy who just plays basketball and cares about little else, the guy Spurs fans knew him to be before the fall of 2017. Instead of being bound and determined to bolt to LA, really he just wanted to get away from the Spurs franchise.
Which means that somebody ed up really, really bad. Unless that person was Julianna Hawn Holt, Gregg Popovich is accountable for failing to fire whoever needed to be fired to assuage a home-grown top-3 NBA talent.
And the Spurs start to look like a franchise that was flailing until Tim Duncan showed up, and started flailing again just one year after he retired.

If he goes back to TOR that will be the narrative for the casual, uninformed idiot but that's not really the case to anyone with some knowledge of the situation.

Man, I hope Kawhi stays in TOR. Not only does TOR deserve it for being bold but it would make the league the most exciting it has been in a long, long time.

I don’t care if it changes whatever narrative; just don’t go to the damn Lakers man
Fist to chest on that one homie.

There is an 800+ page thread on Kawhi on Lakers Ground that is absolutely pure gold to read right now. A lot of anger and frustration building amongst their fans because of Kawhi's delay and allowing the FA market to dry up. If he signs with Toronto that place will implode. Just go to the last 3-4 pages to catch up.

The case that contains the virus that will end the world and Tom Cruise is only yards away from reaching it!
And then everyone remembers he's only 5'1"...

Nobody really cares at this point about accountability. It’s much worse if he goes to LA because it would mean it’s harder to contend for the future of our Spurs.

Well to start he himself requested LA. If he just wanted out of SA he wouldn't have specified that it needed to be LA and only LA.

Then Toronto bent the knee for him. He and Uncle Dennis run that organization. I'm sure whatever concession both of them want Ujiri will make. It makes sense for them to do that, since they were before him and will be after him, but that doesn't really make sense here with the established culture. And before some idiot says " the culture, he's a top 3 player" ...IMO 5 years of Nephew's prime isn't worth giving the culture up. It's the only thing keeping us from going into small-market obscurity like SAC or ORL. The Spurs not willing to give Neph and Uncle that type of power doesn't mean they ed up.

stfu, everyone on site would want him back if things were somehow amended and he was giving the spurs serious consideration. "i'd rather not have kawhi, who's in his prime and just led his team to a championship"

you already think the spurs are contenders the way things stand so in your head, this team with kawhi should be automatic champs.

If he's willing to wait several more days to make his decision, then yeah - he's almost certainly buying time for the Clippers to make a trade at this point. What else could it be?

It almost feels like he's also building up his mouth pieces. Letting Cris Carter make his big 'announcement' , Jabari's latest development, (both dismissing what Woj reported) and even Jalen Rose with his 99% comment.

Wouldn't surprise me if they already know, but they're just using this time to get attention and let their mouth pieces give 'exclusive' updates.
