The Dallas media, papers & radio, were encouraging Mavs fans to boo Nash. First it Finley now Nash. What classless fookwits!
That's bull . If Grant Hill returned to Detroit as an opponent for a playoff game, I expect he'd get a standing ovation (he always does in the regular season, at least). Now Stack, that's a different story![]()
Did you hear Jim Gray's (or was it Craig Sager?) sideline report during the 2nd quarter on this very subject. He said how the media was calling for it, but Dirk hadn't asked for it yet. And that Cuban didn't support it because outside of Dirk, Nash was the 2nd most loved player here. And that despite the jersey it's hard to boo the player behind it.
I was like WTF. You were signing a different tune when it was Finley. Cuban was even telling people to boo Finley if they saw him on the street.

I'm pretty sure Cuban wanted him booed at the game but that he hoped that fans would shake his hand on the street. I think I heard that somewhere, although I could be mistaken.
dallas fans are trashy and classless, of course they booed nash. then he helped beat them in heartbreaking fashion on their homecourt
Classless? Come on! I can think of 20 things that fans could do that are more classless than booing a player that is now playing for the opposition. Apathy is the absence of feeling, not hate.
^steve nash played for that francise for a long time, helped make dallas a winning team. the city of dallas has no reasons for sour grapes, he took more money. who wouldnt? the fans owe him more than that.
I dont understand why they are booing Finley and not Nash. Nash chose to leave and Finley was released, he had no choice. If it wasnt for the Allen Houston Rule, Finley would still be a Mav. It just puzzles me.
Pretty soon they will be booing Cuban for letting Nash go to Phoenix. Cuban thinks by beating Spurs, he got "the monkey off their back," but he hasn't yet realized that a different monkey jumped right back on it.
Racism? Seriously, it makes no sense.
Nash even beat them last year, even more reason to boo him.
What has Finley done against the Mavs yet?!? Nothing, really.
I've stood and applauded Stack since he left. Also Grant Hill. Most of the 'stars' in the league also get applauded here. When Iverson comes to town, Duncan, any of those guys, they all get applause during the intros here in Detroit.
I agree. The situation was very similar with Stackhouse. He wanted a max check, Dumars said no, and when that happened, the GM was proactive and made a move. I still enjoy seeing Stackhouse doing well because he did help Detroit get things back on track.
I just don't understand why it becomes a moral judgement on the fans if they disagree with that. Convincing the Dallas fans that there's a huge difference between 65 million and 50 million is a hard sell. I'm sure that if he hadn't played for Dallas, Nash would still get booed. Nowitzki and the Mavs have had their best season ever, and here's a Two-Time MVP and his team that's standing between the Mavs and the Finals. I wouldn't cheer for him under those conditions.
Man you are a dumbass, cuban said fans should boo him in a game, but if we saw him in the street to shake his hand. Fans are booing Michael the basketball player, not Michael the person.
and Nash left the team because all he cared about was money. If we still had nash we would still be a horrible defensive team just trying to outscore the opponent.
Steve Nash is really a classy guy. Top notch, he even came over when he to visit the Mavs and said his congrats to each and every player for last series win. He's a classy guy. Steve left on terms where he wanted more money and Cuban wasnt willing to offer him more money so he went where the paper was. Which nobody can be mad at.
Finley went to a team that Mavs consider enemy-like. Period. He went there with the hopes of pursuing a ring and nothing else. Not about money, not about playing time. He even took a lesser role in SA, which he was refusing to do in Dallas. He was a good dude I give Mike his credit and I will gladly cheer him the day his jersey is retired here, if it ever is. But when he steps on the court in that Black and Silver uni, there is nothing to make me not boo him. And I think too many ppl think the MAV FANS are booin Michael Finley and his memory... and we arent. We are booing the Spur uniform. Regardless of if its Mike in it or not - he still chose to be a Spur and he had the option to go anywhere else and receive the same amount of money... his decision to pursue a ring. Unlike Steve who left bc Cuban didnt offer him enuf money.
With all of that said - there were a few boos. But it didnt last.
EDIT: and like Darrin... MVP and his team are what's standing between the Mavs and the Finals... - so I could understand why some fans boo him.
All I can really go by is my experience from this season where I went to 11 games at the Palace, but this year at least, the stars get booed along with their teams. Went to the Lakers game, Kobe was booed. Mavs game, Stack was booed by alot of fans almost every time he touched the ball. Shaq and Wade? Booed. Was at the Spurs game on Christmas Day. Every Spur was booed loudly. The only exception to this rule, as far as I could tell, is former Pistons who were loved when they were in town (G. Hill, Corliss Williamson, Mike James) or Detroiters like Jalen Rose.
I think the thing that confuses people is that Nash or Finley would be booed above and beyond the rest of their team. Why make a special case of having Fin booed every time he touches the ball? Did Ginobili get booed every time he touched it? No, so why on earth would Cuban want a special case made of Finley? Doesn't make sense.
It's pretty funny because Finley started out what the Mavs have become now. I guarantee you that if, hypothetically, the Spurs cut Duncan with that silly amnesty rule, he wouldn't get booed when he came back to SA because of what he meant to this team and this city. If you're booing the Spur uniform, boo every player that wears it. Not just Finley. That's crappy logic, where would Dallas be now if Finley stayed in Phoenix all those years ago?
Exactly. That's what I was trying to say, but I daresay I failed, lol.
Maybe Craig Sager got it wrong. I was only posting what he said during his report on the booing. The TNT announcers even talked about how they weren't going to boo Nash everytime because he had the ball in his hands too much.
Can you explain why Cuban called for Finley to be booed on the street then? He made that statement on the radio when he trashed the riverwalk. He made him out to be the bad guy when Terry punched him. Finley couldn't even bring his family to the game because of the stuff fans were yelling at him.
You're wearing blinders if you can't see the difference between what happened with Finley and what is going on with Nash. Dirk, whether joking or not, called for Finley to be booed and Cuban took it a step further.
Not only did Nash leave but he went to a WC rival too. He not only left for money but you're crazy if you think he wasn't planning on winning a championship with his new team. You would think the crowd would boo Nash for knocking them out of the playoffs last year, if for nothing else.
I scanned a couple Dallas boards (and they contradict the report below) and they said the booing wasn't that much and you could hear quite a few cheers.

Boo-tiful, boo-tiful
The Journal couldn't wait to see what Mavs fans were going to do when Nash was introduced before Game 1.
Would they cheer his hair...and boo the rest of him?
Well, they cheered him only when he was charged with a first-quarter foul on a hand check of Dirk Nowitzki.
The rest of the time? Pretty much a steady diet of boos.
At one point in the second half, fans broke into an MVP chant for Dirk Nowitzki, who finished third in the MVP voting behind Nash and Kobe Bryant.
Nowitzki said he hopes this doesn't turn into another Michael Finley Boo Fest.
"I'm not going to get caught up in that again," said Nowitzki, who suggested before the start of the Spurs series that Finley get booed at the AAC. "I was joking against San Antonio, and Steve played his heart out here, too...so, we'll see what happens."
i don't understand that. steve left because he wanted to. finley wanted to stay. nash deserves more boos than finley. cuban got rid of both of them, and now he wants to act like nash did more for the franchise than finley because finley went to the spurs. that's bull .
Cuban never said to boo finley on the streets, he said he would hope fans would go an shake his hand. Damn you're an idiot
From what I heard he was BARELY boo'd...
Booing the jersey and not the man. Mavericks fans don't hate Nash...they do hate what he's done to them head to head though!!![]()
BS...![]()
Finley also said he couldn't see himself coming off the bench here, which completely eliminated any chance of him playing for Avery...
Neither one should get boo'd really...
