Vet is not my preference as I've written; I always envisioned NVE as a 3rd PG. Beno screwed that up.

Back-up PG has never been a priority for POP and the Spurs seem to have enough bigs already in the pipe-line that they can't pay. I really think it's time for the Spurs to or get off the pot with Scola, but it may cost them to much to buy him out. Javtokas seems like a logical choice. The Spurs are likely to season Mahinmi for another year over-seas.

What I would try to do:

    1. Bring in Javtokas
    2. Bring in Evans
    3. Sign a long 3: Jones, Woods etc.
    4. Trade Barry+X for J.R. Smith
    5. Sign and trade Nazr for Duhon (if he will be healthy again) or try out Jay Williams

    So you would go with:

    Rasho/ Javtokas/ Oberto
    TD/ Evans/ Horry
    Bowen/ Finley/ Woods
    Manu/ Smith/ X
    Parker/ Duhon/ Udrih

If you go small put Evans and TD together. I would keep Rasho because the Rockets will probably be in the Playoffs next year so you need some size against Yao. It will be an interesting offseason...

Several folks want to revisit the Barry/J.R. Smith trade. There was an awful lot written about Smith and his at ude problem over playing time, practice and consequent friction with the coach.

Won't the problems be even worse here, if he's playing behind an all-star?

    Another offseason plan:
    - Trade Barry to Charlotte for Jumaine Jones (S&T $10M/3years)
    - Draft with the 59th pick Bobby Jones or a raw euro with some upside if Jones isn't available.
    - Trade Oberto to a team under the cap like Hornets/Raptors/Bulls/Jazz for a trade exception.
    - Split the MLE between Luis Scola ($14M/4years) and Javtokas ($7M/3years).
    - Sign Milt Palacio for the min.
    - Sign Sean Marks for the min
    - Sign Bobby Jones or Sanikidze or a D-League guy as 14th player.

    Roster :
    PG : Parker/Udrih/Palacio
    SG : Ginobili/Finley
    SF : Bowen/Jones
    PF : Duncan/Scola/Horry
    C : Nesterovic/Javtokas

    IL : Marks/14th guy.

Spurs stay under the luxury tax threshold.

Nazr -- Sign and trade to Chitown for Chris Duhon (pending the latter's succesful recovery from surgery). Yeah it's big for small, but it's Nazr Mohammed and we'll get a trade exception. Sign Javtokas to replace him.
If Chicago is under the cap, why do they do a S&T to land Nazr?

Trade Barry for a sign and trade of Claxton.

Trade Rasho and Scola for a trade exception.

Trade Oberto and Beno for an sign and trade of Scot Pollard.

Split the midlevel between Reggie Evans and Jumaine Jones, sign Javtokas for the LLE.

Fill out the lineup with a couple of inexpensive players like Sanikidze.

    Lineup:

    PG: Parker, Claxton
    SG: Manu, Finley
    SF: Bowen, Jumaine Jones
    PF: Duncan, R. Evans, Horry
    C: Pollard, Javtokas

How about trading Scola to Chicago for the #16 pick? Chicago needs a scoring big man, and they are way under the cap this summer (meaning they could absorb Scola's buyout).
With the #16 pick, the Spurs could grab one of the following: Rudy Fernandez, Thabo Sefolosha, Saer Sene, Oleksiy Pecherov, Shawne Williams, Marcus Vinicius, or maybe someone like Randy Foye or Rodney Carney if they slipped.

Trading Scola for a mid to late first rounder is a legit possibility. The downside is that it almost certainly doesn't help us this year.

    Bring Javtokas & Scola.
Let Nazr go.Try a sign&trade if possible.I doubt it though.
Trade Rasho if possible.A decent draft pick would be perfect. However,it's not too realistic as well.
    Get Bobby Jackson or Speedy.
    Keep Brent Barry.

I find it realistic.Don't think we'll be very active with trades and free agents.Basically we've got what it takes to become champs again, we only need to get a few small peaces together, i.e. backup PG and a good big man.

One player I'd absolutely love to see in a Spurs uniform is Gerald Wallace.Don't see it working though.Unfortunately.He'd be the perfect Bowen successor at the 3.

Go Spurs Go! Win it all again next season!

I like trading scola for a mid first round pick, but only if we draft Shawne Williams from memphis, he's 6'9 and can play SG, SF and PF. his profile:

Strengths: Has tremendous versatility, at 6-9 Shawne can play from the 1-thru-4 positions ... Advanced offensive game, really understands how to play ... Great one on one skills offensively ... Great vision, passing skills ... Good ball handler, almost second nature ... Can create for himself or others off the dribble drive ... Consistent jump shot, with range out to three point ... A highlight reel waiting to happen ... Extremely long wingspan makes him a terrific rebounder and shot blocker ... Good compe or, doesn't back down from a challenge, as he showed squaring off with Adam Morrison after being pushed ... His body is not far from being NBA ready ...

Weaknesses: Low-release point on his jumper could cause problems at the next level ... Will need to develop better defensive technique, more intensity ... Quickness is very good, but won't stand out on the next level ... Still must add strength and conditioning ...

    Retires: NVE and Marks
    Walks: Nazr and Sanders
    Trade: Barry/Oberto/Udrih for Brown/Smith
MLE: Split between Marcus Banks and Jumaine Jones
    LLE: Javtokas

I'm not sure what it's called? Can you sign Chuck Hayes to the minimum?

New depth chart looks like this:

    Rasho/Javtokas/Horry
    Duncan/Brown/Hayes
    Bowen/Jones
    Ginobli/Finley/Smith
    Parker/Banks

They do want to trade Duhon and that would give them a center for a net cap hit of, say, $3 million instead of $6 million. They'll have more cap space left to sign other players they want.

    - Trade Barry to Charlotte for Jumaine Jones (S&T $10M/3years)
I don't see them saddling themselves with Barry's deal when they are on the verge of having huge cap space, something that makes them erally attractive to potential buyers. Look for their front office to play a vintage Sterling/Baylor strategy for another year.

Trading Scola to Chicago for the 16th pick is a legit possibility.

Chicago does need a scoring big man and they do have the money to help out with Scola's buy-out.

Plus, the fact that they already have a successful Argentinian in Nocioni would only help out the transition.

With the 16th pick, a lot of scenarios can occur. You can go the route of getting an experienced college player who could possibly come in and help out....or you can role the dice with a foreign player with a lot of talent and potential......Splitter, Marquinhos, Alexsandrov, etc.....

I wouldn't expect any draft pick to be truly useful for about 2 years. The FO would really have to be high on a guy if they project to be over the tax - this doesn't include foreigners.

That roster looks kick ass, but I doubt all of that will happen in 1 summer.

Since Minnesota is making overtures about letting go of their No# 6 pick in this upcoming draft, perhaps the Spurs can work a deal to obtain this pick. Assuming, of course, they've targeted a player they really like that will be available.

I think Charlotte will do this trade for various reasons :

    - Barry's salary isn't $20M/ year : it's $5M per year, it won't ruin their future.

    - Don't forget that they had to re-sign Wallace and Okafor in 08 and Felton (and maybe May) in 09. If they don't want to pay the luxury tax, they won't spend tons of money with free agent in 07 and 08. I don't think Charlotte will be close to the Salary cap for the next two years. Barry's contract expire at the good moment for them and won't disturb them of doing what they want.

    - They need a SG who is agood shooter.

    - They need some leadership and experience. Charlotte will maybe trade Knight this summer too and Barry's experience will be huge for them. Barry is a good locker room presence.

I simply don't believe the Cats are at the point where they are looking for an old guy like Barry. Had Barry showed any real leadership here I might see the point, but if the Cats are spending money on anything, it'll be on youth.
