From The Hoop. No clue if it's solid info or not.

Bourousis between Greece and the NBA

The negotiations have started about the future of Ioannis Bourousis(2.10-C) who is considered to be one of the hottest players this summer. Sportnet.gr says that there is initially a big gap between the money that Bourousis is asking and what Olympiakos are offering. It also says that the San Antonio Spurs offer him a 4 season contract whereas Olympiakos offer a 3+1 contract. It also says that San Antonio offer more money than Olympiakos at this moment in time.

Another report comes from gazzetta.gr which mentions 2 more NBA teams interested in the young greek center apart from San Antonio and they are Memphis and Cleveland. The agent of Bourousis, Kostas Papadakis, will meet with the Aggelopoulos brothers again in a few days and it's expected that Olympiakos will come up with a better offer.

It is common knowledge that Bourousis would prefer to stay in Greece and Olympiakos rather than play in the NBA so there will definitely be more news on this one. He averaged 12.5 points and 7.4 rebounds in 22 games in the Euroleague.

    I doubt it.

If they've really made him an offer already, it would stand to reason, they did so with a mindset to give themselves plenty of time to keep there options open, if he refused.

That's one good thing about going after non-NBA players. They're not beholden to the same restrictions, as far as free-agency rules, thus, allowing you to go after a talent you'd otherwise have to sit on your hands and wait for.

I'm guessing with the way the economy is and the impending '10 free-agency bonanza, free-agents won't be getting snatched up all that quickly.

These guys' agents are going to be working their asses off trying to get their clients the best deal. So even if Bourousis doesn't make up his mind before July 1, (IIRC the date correctly) it's probably not all that worrisome.

Aggelopoulos brothers dont know wheres the limit. Im thinkin that they will keep him whatever it takes. They already bought Childress last summer, payied him 8 mil without taxes, so its doutful that Bourousis will come here.

    From Greek writers of Eurobasket

    http://www.eurobasket.com/Greece/bas...?NewsID=161415

Other Red news (behind the scenes) is that Giannis Bourousis (212-C-83) will be probably moving to the States and NBA, as he considers being the most 'hot deal' in Europe for teams that play the pick n roll, as the Greek center is among the best in the European courts.

Please....if the Spurs are indeed interested in him and his current team and many others can start negotiating with him immediately after their season ends, you can't tell me that the Spurs didn't at least unofficially make an offer. To have no contact before July 1 would mean he would likely be signed already before you got in the game. In addition, since McDonald never had an original thought before I need to see that confirmed elsewhere before I believe it is true.

So what did the people who went to the preseason game last night think of Ioannis? He had some decent stats, but nothing too great. In 18:20 minutes he had 7 pts, 2 O boards, 2 D boards, 2-5 or 40% FG, 1-2 or 50% 3FG, 2-4 or 50% FT, 4 fouls, 2 steals, 1 TO, and 1 block.

I only know the numbers, I have no clue who he guarded, and who he scored on.

Now that we know how he feels about the Spurs, I wish I had seen the game. It's interesting that Pop compared him to Vlade, who was a great passer.

    Splitter:

    31 minutes

    4/10 FG
    0/0 3 PT FG
    2/4 FT

    10 points
    6 rebounds
    1 assist

    1 steal
    0 blocks

    10 player ranking

    Bourousis:

    23 minutes

    7/12 FG
    2/5 3 PT FG
    2/2 FT

    18 points
    11 rebounds
    1 assist

    1 steal
    0 blocks

    24 player ranking

Like I say here many times, Bourousis is much better center than Splitter no matter what Spurs managers say.

If I were a basketball player, I woudl like to go as far as I can of Greek Basketball after what happens in the final. It was a true disaster. I would be damn surprised if a player like Childress is still with Olympiakos next year.

Bourousis has had a down year and NBA teams shouldn't make him big offers this year. Even if he is upset by what happens, I don't see him trying to break his contract and take a big paycut to go in NBA.

    And Splitter >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Bourousis.
Spurs should put all their focus on getting Tiago and hopes he won't them a second time.

At the risk of having Kill_Bill_Forever needing to consult a physician after a 4-hour episode, could Bourousis be an option next year?

With 'Dyess retiring, Splitter or Blair will move up to their No. 2, Bonner will play much the same role, possibly with diminished minutes, and they'll need a fifth big.

Bourousis could come pretty cheap, the Spurs have shown interest (as has he in them) and his skill set makes some sense -- he's got the shooting touch to space the floor and in Blair and Splitter, he'd have a decent compliment to his slow feet; I could see him being one of those low-minute PER players that has Hollinger salivating but wouldn't be served well being anything more.

When you think about it, he and Blair could be a pretty decent fit, possibly Splitter, too. IBS is a real space eater that occupies bodies on the boards, something that could help Blair to be a better defensive rebounder, and his shooting would help to space the floor for him on the offensive end -- he'd give the Spurs one more big that provides somewhat of a specialty for spot minutes or matchups.

    Thoughts?

When his name came up a couple of seasons ago that the spurs were interested I was all for it. He reminds of IIlgauskas the way he plays and his size. Do you happen to have any of his current contract info?

Not a bad idea, but I don't see it happening.

From his perspective, why would he want to be the fifth big? Unlike Splitter, who will wait no more than a season to be in the rotation, he could very well have to wait a few (however many more Duncan decides to play).

From their perspective, they (Pop, at least) views Duncan, Splitter and Blair as more centers than power forwards. With one of their two true power forwards retiring, I've got to think they'll want to replace him with a true power forward, or a combo forward.

They could go with a younger player, who was not too long ago thought to have quite a bit of upside. Guys like Johnson, Wright and Clark all figure to be available on the cheap. If they go the trade route, I could see them targeting guys like Powell, Brown, Brackins and Tolliver. If they go with a veteran free agent, guys like Andersen (though he's not really a true power forward) and Cook are possibilities. But I wouldn't be shocked if -- short of being able to fill the need via the draft -- they go off the board and pluck someone out of obscurity in Europe, a la Neal. Who knows, Haislip may even be a possibility.

Just a swarthier version of Matt Bonner, tbh...

Additionally, players from his homeland never last in the NBA. Homesick or something...
