An NFL spokesman today dispelled rumors that the league fears attendance would be low if it allows the New Orleans Saints to play home games at the 65,000-seat Alamodome this season.
“We are sure San Antonio would do a fine job (with attendance),” Greg Aiello, NFL vice president of public relations, said before adding that the league’s primary concern is doing all it can to assist with the recovery of hurricane-ravaged Louisiana.
With that in mind, Aiello said LSU’s 92,000-seat Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, La., remains the league’s No. 1 option for Saints home games this season.
“Louisiana officials are making it very clear that they think it would be important to return the Saints to the region as soon as possible,” Aiello said.
“The question is when will that be,” Aiello added. “(LSU officials) will have to tell us. (Saints owner) Tom Benson and the Saints have said the same thing.”
Baton Rouge is home to thousands of evacuees from New Orleans and also serves as a base for rescue operations.
The league has switched the Saints’ home opener against the New York Giants from the hurricane-damaged Superdome to Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 19.
The Saints’ next home game is set for Oct. 2 against Buffalo.
“Right now, the goal is LSU and Baton Rouge. Whether that will be ready for Oct. 2, we don’t know yet. But we are in discussions about it.”
Aiello reiterated that San Antonio remains an option for “some” Saints games this season.
“It depends on the cir stances,” Aiello said. “We have to see what the issues are in terms of playing in Louisiana and what the alternatives are.
“(Baton Rouge and San Antonio) are among the options. There may be others. We aren’t ruling anything out right now. We have to work through the options and make a decision.”
One option that has been ruled out by the league is forcing the Saints to play their home games at the stadiums of division opponents. Playing home games at the stadiums of non-division opponents hasn’t been ruled out but isn’t preferred, Aiello said.
Ailello also said there is no chance the Saints will play in Los Angeles this season. The NFL has made no secret of its desire to place a team in Los Angeles.
