Funny. Mills wins the backup spot over Joseph and ends up with way less money than him.
They "got him anyway" because the Spurs let them.

I'm not sure if patty is as amused as you.
Patty may have taken a pay cut just like Boris.
Ginobili,Parker and most recently Duncan have all been taking pay cuts to be able to play together.
Ginobili in the current open market may in fact even command a $7m a year figure, but who knows if he'll take a pay cut to stay in the team.
To be fair, Patty was coming off an injury on his shooting shoulder...
Good luck Cory, you get to go to play in Canada. You surprised me with your improvements each season, it was a pleasure to watch you.
Pop, "Hey T.J., how is your neck? I got 600k for you!" lol am I the only one who thinks we need to temper our expectations this upcoming season? There is NO money for a bench.
That's actually not a terrible deal when you put it in perspective.
1. The rising cap will put this at an MLE-level deal in two years, which isn't absurd for a competent backup PG.
2. The kid is only 23yrs old and has room to continue refining his game.
3. He performed well in long stretches when given the opportunity.
4. He's a true lead guard.
5. Good value compared to other young PGs that got paid....Hill, Lin, Jennings, Jackson, Dragic, Knight.
Ultimately you do this deal for Cory if you feel like all he needs is an opportunity in a solid, stable role. I personally think it's a good deal for both sides and wouldn't be surprised if Cory had a mini "breakout" in his Toronto years. Who knows, maybe the Spurs bring him back in 3-4yrs to carry the torch from Tony.
Why was withdrawing the QO necessary? Let's say Joseph remained a RFA and he signed this offer sheet with the Raptors on the 9th. Could the Spurs free up the cap space by just renouncing him and forgoing the three-day window to match?
The rising cap is being used to justify all sorts of deals, but to me this one is still a bit over the line into overpaying territory. Even with a $108M cap, you don't want to be paying ~8% of it to a bench player unless they're awesome like Iguodala, semi-prime Manu, etc.
Most rosters don't go three deep in competent lead guards tbqh. It only feels like a big loss because he was so good in his stint last year as the main PG early in the season. But now that Patty is back full-time it shouldn't be an issue. Hopefully neither he nor Parker goes out for an extended period of time though, because that's when it might hurt.
In other words, a third string PG for the min is normal.
Yeah, if they give a letter to the league renouncing their right of first refusal, they can clear that cap hold instantly.
Diaw makes more than that right now. Manu and Diaw made more last year. It's not all that uncommon.
Maybe they think he could be awesome. He was pretty good when he got regular minutes last year and is still only 23yrs old. You focused on on the rising cap reason and glossed over the other points tbqh. But, then you might not think he's very good.
If Manu comes back and West signs, Spurs will be very compe ive ... but still not as deep as we are adapt to. I do not think it is enough to finish Top2 in the West before the playoffs start ...
Im a little upset by this.. i hope we can find another solid piece who can play decent defense and be a steward of the offense. Because lately TP hasnt been providing much of that at all. Who knows, maybe Patty continues his development and becomes a viable playmaker.
Au revoir et bon chance, Cory. You were an excellent Spur and I wish we could have kept you.![]()
Good for CoJo, no way the Spurs were gonna pay him more than Duncan
I can agree with this. Always have, when he was pouting about not getting paid last year as well. We all loved the brute, but he was a little short, slow-footed and with a mediocre leaping ability. He got exposed in the playoffs. Offensively, he was just a guy. I would say that the only thing he did exceptionally well was set some bone-crushing screens. Everything else about his game was bland and replaceable.
The Spurs will need a replacement that can set up those bone-crushing screens. I suspect Tavares is that guy. He only needs to do one thing and one thing well..... set bone crushing screens.
That tussle with Barnes gave a bad perception. Barnes didn't really win that. Baynes never let go of the ball. He was in an awkward footing, and tripping over stuff on the sidelines. Barnes was sure-footed and had all the leverage. I don't care that he is gone, but it's for all kinds of other reasons than that. That struggle was just poetic visual punctuation.
Good luck CoJo, did a great job here with no complaints. Glad he got paid.
Doesn't look like that will happen. He can't be traded now.
It's hard to compare the Spurs situation to the rest of the league given Duncan's willingness to play below market value. If Duncan even pulled a semi-Kobe on the Spurs, they would have to be far more careful in the deals they give out.
Nobody signs till the 9th. Splitter gets traded on condition that Tavares gets signed for 1.5m. Tavares signs but it isn't done until the 9th, just like Spitter's deal. Tavares contract gets traded to Spurs on the 9th in exchange for Splitter dump.
