It’s a good sign Pop is still testing Lonnie. If Pop had completely given up on him then Lonnie would be ignored and not given chances.

It was not a close game so he may not have cared but I am guessing murray was on grahm and Vassel was on Ingrahm. BI is a better player and would have overpowered walker. If he was on jones done know how strong he is. It also looks like they were going at walker the last couple min. this is not really saying how great his defense was kind of the opposite.
This is annoying because your making excuses.

It was 102-92. Tad under 9 minutes remaining. Pelicans were on a 5 point run. Spurs time out. Murray, walker, poeltl come on with McDermott and Johnson on the wings.

Murray gets a midrange shot in. Pels walk it up with mccoullum, jones, clark, hayes and temple are on the court. No graham or Ingrahm btw. So obviously CJ s the number one guy here and also playing point.

CJ Mccullum walks it up to the right wing. Hayes comes to the center receives the pass. CJ tries to receive a hand off but walker denies. Hayes passes it to jones. Jones probes his dribble, pulls out. Tries to give it to CJ. Walker denies again. Jones loses it, goes out of bounds.

It was great D. He played it all game but Pop clearly chose walker to mark CJ. It would be easier to just agree next time.

Yeah Walker on ball defense on non physical quick guards is very good, remember him doing well with Kyrie. As long as he does not get overpowered putting Lonnie on ball is better than off ball this way you get 5 focused defenders. He falls asleep when he is not part of the action even in big games ( aka MEM play-in ).

He got switched onto Ingram a few times who struggled to get a clean look. The defense has come a long way for sure.

His offense is just too inconsistent . This time around he seemed more engaged .

Yeah. His D last year was poor. I say now he is above average, leaning into being good. It's a pity his 3p shot has got AWOL all year. Because that's your 3&D right there.

Defense comes with length and Lonnie doesn't have enough of it.

KJ also doesn't have long arms and he's marginally better than Lonnie.

So we know got Langford that does have long arms and can leap out of the gym. At this stage, he's obviously better than Lonnie.

Richardson also has long arms and a 44" vertical.

Spurs have been undersized for very long now. The new lineup (w/o Walker) will have Murray and Jones as their smallest players.

There is much more to playing defense than length.

I agree. But Spurs players are coached well enough to do the right thing. Meaning, the added length juist makes a better Spurs player. Just look at KBD. I don't think many teams will even find KBD useful.

This Bulls game may not be a good one for player evaluation. I suspect the Spurs will go all in to win it if they can. It’s a game that has overtones.

I've always like Lonnie Rocket. Hard to say what his future with the Spurs looks like though.

So I orginally thought you were talking about the last couple of plays. Even still though your original post was saying the last 5 min. now your doubling it to 9. At 436 he subbed out and then subbed back in at 344. Since Muccolum was not really in during that time could not count that time for walker guaring him. When he checked back in then gram and ingrahm were both in. Vassel checked back in at 436. BI enters at 819 and looks to play the rest of the game. if your going back to 9 min with the players your looking at your basically saying walker is better then Doug. Doug has never been known as a defender. You can say I am makeing excuses but you are changing the story quite abit. since you said it was DV lonnie and DJ. and DV did not check in till less then 5 min left for the end of the game.

They usually put Walker on a high level scorer because he can’t rotate properly, and leaves the defense in a shambles. He’ll never rotate off of that player. timvp had it in one of his write ups a while back.

actually, even these last three games have been a microcosm of his season. he's had some great stretches in all of them but there have been other stretches in which he's more or less the other lonnie.

I mean so? Dude is obviously not going to be a super star, and most other players don't have a full time level of consistency. Lonnie is going to be streaky. As long as he doesn't disappear for large stretches of the season, this is fine. If he keeps up this level of play then he has a good NBA future. That isn't a given, but he's played well since the deadline.

He’s played better the past 3 games. Still don’t think he’s a Spur next season though.

I could see Lonnie playing really well the rest of the season and earning a contract. I don't want the Spurs to just let him walk. If he plays well they should sign him and then worry about trading him later if they want to move him, but they shouldn't let the guy just walk if hes playing like he is now. He's got value.

There's no shortage of teams including our own that benefit from a guy who can come in and provide a spark... and be a threat to score 20 any given night. I agree he's a bit too inconsistent. I don't mind the occasional bad game etc but the better games need to outweigh the nights off. I have no problem extending him. I think he brings another dimension to the team if he can just get slightly more consistent. He's still young enough that we can squeeze another 10-15% out of him. Especially if we become a better team with a legit scoring threat beyond Murray.

It’s him or Langford at this time. We have yet to see Langford play only the promise of 6’11” wingspan and better defense
