Trump administration lies all day long

White House officials have insisted Trump’s ballroom must be finished because it’s already “65% complete.”

White House do ents paint a different picture: the project is maybe 25-33% along.

SCOTUS majority is digging its own grave, tbh

By a 5-4 vote (with Chief Justice Roberts joining the three Democratic appointees in dissent), #SCOTUS grants a stay pending appeal in the ballroom case, clearing the way for Trump to continue building the ballroom indefinitely while the litigation proceeds.

    Justice Roberts

The President ordered the demolition of the East Wing of the White House to make way for a new, privately funded state ballroom in its place. Construction of the ballroom has proceeded apace for the better part of a year. That construction is likely unlawful. Pursuant to its plenary cons utional authority over the District of Columbia and federal property, Congress has explicitly prohibited the construction of any “building or structure . . . on any reservation, park, or public grounds of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia without express authority of Congress.” 40 U. S. C. §8106. The ballroom is a building or structure being erected on federal park grounds—President’s Park—in the District of Columbia. Yet Congress has not passed any law resembling “express authority” for the Executive’s construction of it.

The White House is not just any building, and—when itcomes to historic preservation—Hoagland is not just any person. In failing to appreciate as much, the Court misconceives the plaintiff ’s injury, allowing the Executive’s likely infringement of the Legislature’s power of the purse andauthority to regulate federal property in the District of Columbia to continue. Today’s decision is no victory for the separation of powers.Winston Churchill once remarked that “[w]e shape ourbuildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us.” Onwards to Victory: War Speeches by the Right Hon. WinstonS. Churchill, C.H., M.P. 317 (1944). All the more reason to ensure that those responsible follow the rules in decidingwhat to tear down and what to build up at the People’sHouse.

    I respectfully dissent.

I tend to doubt this completely novel interpretation of the bounds of judicial review will survive the election of a Democratic Party member to POTUS

Like, this could not possibly be more clear-cut. And the majority's opinion is that 'sure it's against the law, but no one has the standing to point out that this is illegal in a court of law and seek a judicial intervention, so the joke's on everyone!'

ask yourself if you think it's self-evidently true that "member of national historic trust is affected by destruction of east wing" is "not nearly" as strong of an injury as "POTUS is temporarily stopped from doing something blindingly illegal." That's what we call Big Special President Theory.

Something remarkably telling in how the majority (top) and dissent (bottom) ascribe the actor undertaking the demolition project. Much easier to ignore illegality if you imagine the conduct as that of the whole fed govt. The president doesn't even show up as an agent at all in the majority's opinion.

People say law school is pointless, but where else can you learn to interpret "irreparable harm" in such a way that it allows you to block regulations that don't take effect for six years while allowing bulldozers to destroy public property?

Roberts paved the way with a bull administrative stay

The problem with Roberts’s administrative stay isn’t that it was unexplained; it’s that no defensible explanation for it exists. Other than a March 2024 concurrence by Justice Barrett (which was about administrative stays issued by courts of appeals), the justices have never publicly identified any criteria for an “administrative” stay, as opposed to a stay pending appeal. But irreparable harm has to be at least part of the equation. And there’s just no universe in which a party is “irreparably” harmed by a temporary pause in construction; indeed, it wouldn’t be a construction project without unplanned, temporary pauses.

but wait, there might already be a third presidential emergency bunker, too

In August 2026, The Washington Post reported that a second presidential emergency facility was constructed under the White House between the September 11 attacks and the end of the presidency of Barack Obama. Citing two former federal officials, the Post characterized the structure as a "bunker" mined into the bedrock 60 feet below the White House. According to the officials, it was designed as a secure continuity of government command center that can accommodate dozens of individuals for weeks if necessary, during and after attacks by weapons of mass destruction. The existence of the facility was highly classified and reportedly not even disclosed to legislators or most senior executive branch officials.[11] Leon Panetta, who served as director of the Central Intelligence Agency and secretary of defense under Barack Obama, confirmed the existence of this newer structure when asked about it on MSNOW.[12]

This reporting follows similar claims by Ronald Kessler in his 2018 book Changing the Rules of the Game: Inside the Trump White House, and also in later interviews.[13] Kessler suggested that this second bunker was constructed north of the West Wing in a project known as the White House Big Dig. Other analysts have argued that the North Lawn excavation was not deep enough to match Kessler's description. Instead, they argue that the deeper bunker was tunneled from a site in East Potomac Park, citing other unexplained construction projects around the White House.[14]

the Kennedy Center's finances didn't crater until after Trump took it for himself

for all I know, the claimed dilapidation and danger to the public could be real -- but it's interesting that didn't seem to come up so urgently before Trump's name got taken off the building

Leaders of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, installed by President Donald Trump, say the center is on the brink of bankruptcy and argue that putting the president’sname on its facade — and thus ensuring his fundraising efforts — may be the only way to avoid imminent and “certain fiscal collapse,” according to do ents obtained by The Washington Post.

The bleak assessment is laid out in a 57-page packet distributed to the center’s board of trustees ahead of a special meeting Tuesday, when the Trump-led board is scheduled to consider two resolutions aimed at addressing twin crises confronting the national performing arts center: one financial, the other physical. Center officials say they could be unable to make payroll or pay routine maintenance contracts “within a matter of weeks” and argue that publicly recognizing Trump could secure his help raising enough money to keep the ins ution afloat.

    ...

The presentation makes clear that Trump’s support hinges on getting public credit for his involvement. The financial resolution says Trump has offered to “raise the necessary funds to keep the Center from bankruptcy” while the building undergoes a sweeping renovation. But it says Trump is unlikely to provide “fundamental oversight” of that project or lead a financial rescue without “appropriate recognition” of his role.

What is crazy is Congress made 256.7 million dollars available until September 2029. Where is the money going?

    Kennedy Center demolition watch

In August, the board voted to attach Trump’s name to the performing arts center, in an attempt to honor the president after Cooper blocked an earlier effort to rename the Kennedy Center after Trump — and close it for renovations — in May.

"Simply put, defendants cannot install memorials for President Trump or anyone or anything else at the Kennedy Center without Congress’s blessing,” Cooper wrote Tuesday.

    ramming pillars with a forklift

Brantley Myers, a lawyer for the defendants, had told Beatty's team the night before that a loudspeaker closure announcement followed an improperly triggered a fire alarm, the motion says. Asked Wednesday for an explanation, he wrote that the defense "will respond with an explanation as soon as we can," and had not written again when the motion was filed.

"Afterward, I saw a forklift carrying what appeared to be a more permanent form of fencing drive over to the north side of the building. I saw the forklift run into and hit the pillars on the building several times," Kennedy-Bailey wrote.
