Wade is much more dominant with Dirk and Dampier underneath the basket as well. It's amazing how that works

Yeah. To me, that was a horrible coaching decision.
yeah that foul by Pepe in the end was SOOOOO ING STUPID, similar to the Manu foul on Nowitzki, but this one was INTENTIONAL! goddam what a heartbreaker

I agree. Who is going to be the unstoppable scorer for Spain in that situation when Pau is on the bench with an icepack on his foot? That was the ultimate give-up play. Yet another situation where the coach just conceded a le to the opponent.

Just like he (Manu) didn't let the Spurs lose. Oh, wait - he did.
Hmmm... looks like he did it again, but this time with lots of help. I guess the fact that it is where he was born didnt matter much in this game either. I guess he plays just as hard in the NBA as in FIBA, but this just wasn't his year.

    GO SPAIN!!

That was an exciting game! One freaking point!

But why is Manu being blamed? I know they didn't need a 3 point play, but I don't blame the guy. The play was called by the coach-right?

I'm not blaming Manu. If you go back to yesterday on this thread someone said that Manu wouldn't let the Argentina NT lose and that they were going to beat Spain. Since my relatives and family line is Spaniard I am going for the Spanish, and I said they would win. I was just poking fun at the person who said Manu would spill blood before letting the Argies lose.

I´m sorry. I´m not talking about you.
Spain wins this one with heart, talent (and yes, some luck ) But if Argentina play unconfortable, it was because the great spanish defense.

I don't think the Spanish defense had anything to do with Manu throwing up 2 airballs in the last 2 minutes

ARG - Manu deals with defeat

SAITAMA (FIBA World Championship) - Manu Ginobili has won his share of big games with Argentina and at club level in Europe and the United States.

But on Friday, he and his country suffered a 75-74 defeat to Spain in the semi-final of the FIBA World Championship.

"Of course I'm sad, but I'm very proud of my team-mates," said Ginobili, who two years ago led Argentina to an Olympic gold medal.

"We had the shot, a great shot to go to the final.

"But I've had worse losses in my career. Of course it's sad to lose a semi-final like this. but it's part of everybody's career.

"So you have to keep your head up and basketball will give you a revenge."

Argentina won all of their Group A matches in Sendai and then beat New Zealand and Turkey to reach the last four.

Ginobili, who had a game-high 21 points, penetrated into the lane at the end of the game against Spain but chose not to shoot.

Instead, he passed to Andres Nocioni in the corner and Nocioni missed with his attempt.

Now the Argentinians have to play the United States in the bronze medal game after the Americans lost to Greece.

"It's going to be really hard because we had a very tough game," he said.

"We were so close to making it to the final. It's going to be hard for our heads to be ready to face a great team like the USA, but we will try to forget about what happened today and come tomorrow ready to get that bronze medal."

I didn't see anyone mention this but I thought Sergio Rodriguez (White Chocolate) and Garbajosa were the co MVP's of the game along with Gasol. Sergio really gave them awesome punch off the bench -- 14pts in 15 min? Talk about efficiency. Garbajosa had a period where he was lifting their offense.

Gasol was very good but nothing spectacular. He was simply more talented, and too long for Oberto and Argentina bigs. Some of his rebounds were pure height and touch around the basket more than anything else. Gasol is just a tough matchup for them. Gasol probably has been the best player in the tournement -- but he wasn't really the only or main difference in this game.

The starting Spanish backcourt really laid an egg. Talk about inactivity.

As for Manu, I think other posters are right when they say we may have seen the best of him in the 2005 playoffs. I was actually thinking this when the Maverick series ended. Scratch that, I had a feeling that he could not exceed his 2005 playoffs because it was simply too good (forget age, he was insane that season, and it would be a near miracle to play like he did again).

He doesn't seem to have quite as much juice as before, but that could just mean he had an unlucky playoffs. His stats looked the same in the regular season, but in the playoffs he faltered against Sacramento and in the beggining of the Dallas series. I think age, injuries, and simply not being able to live up to his 2005 play will make Manu seem like a much poorer player. But he still was excellent last year and might have one more all star calibur year (without making the team however). But I think his days are winding down a bit. Hopefully he has two healthy playoffs ahead of him. That would be nice.

Actually I think Manu looked in the best shape and condition in a long time. Let's face it, Spain was just a mismatch vs. Argentina same way Dallas was with Spurs last season.

This Spain team is probably the most powerful team this Argentina generation has faced.

And both games, this one against Spain and Game 7 against Dallas, were extremely close. Spain outplayed Argentina, but what does it say that Argentina was one shot away from winning that game?

As for Manu, I agree with you. I think he looked better during these WCs than he did for most of last season. I'm not ready to rule him out yet for having a great 06-07 season.

Well one of the biggest mismatches was Navarro supposedly and he looked like a complete non-factor. Rodriguez was awesome and Navarro was bad. No one expected Sergio to be a huge factor in the game. The main mismatches were Gasol and Garbajosa, but I doubt Spain could force Ginobili to shoot 6-21 every game. They simply played him very well and Ginobili couldn't do anything to rise above it.

These two teams are very evenly matched across the board. Both are talented, experienced, and balanced. I would hardly call either team the clearly superior one.

    I like the Revenge part.

And yeah, this loss wasn't so bad. I wonder why Manu chose not to shoot?

Is it because he did that play with Tim twice and it didn't work and in doing that he passed the option to kick out to Horry again?

As for Manu's game peaking. We'll just have to wait and see. But yeah, he had crazy playoff stats so it's understandable.

I don't care if he doesn't reach that level again really, just as long as he helps pitch in his share for another le with a few Manu styled plays thrown in the mix.

He ran the play that was called in the huddle. They had that huddle miked and you could hear Coach Hernandez say "Pepe and Chapu" - one of the ESPN announcers mentioned that he didn't know who Chapu was. The play was for Manu to drive through the lane, suck in the defenders and then kick it out to either Pepe or Chapu in the corners. They executed the play, Chapu's shot simply didn't go in. I thought for a moment that Scola was going to get the rebound and put it back in for two, but there were too many Spanish players around him battling for it and it just didn't happen.

By the way, how's his wrist? I know he had to leave the game in a lot of pain because he did something to it but then he came back in because Delfino fouled out and he had to finish it.

He came in before Delfino fouled out. I think he just got a stinger and it was fine by the time he came back in.

Ah thanks. Although Chapu did have a good look and a potential winner on release, I think the Spanish D was just too good. Gotta give props to them for grabbing the rebound and boxing out Scola and Oberto. Good Spanish D.

(I mean, they didn't foul just so they could have last posession did they?)

Haha....PAUO GASOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like Barkely says lol. Anyway who cares. If the US wanted to win...cut Wade and others who can't shoot worth a crap. Just the Mavs luck that dude played out of his mind in the Finals....even hitting 3's....he is a horrible shooter. Should have got Kobe, SHaq, and KG.
You talkin about that Wade that killed your team in the finals on jumpshots?? Just clearing it up??

Gasol to be out four months after foot surgery MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Memphis Grizzlies forward Pau Gasol will be sidelined for four months after surgery to repair a broken bone in his left foot.

The 7-foot Gasol is scheduled to leave for his native Spain on Monday for a two-week trip and begin rehabilitation upon returning to Memphis, the Grizzlies said Friday. He broke the bone last week while playing for Spain during the world championships in Japan.
The Grizzlies start preseason play Oct. 10 at Houston, and their first regular-season game is Nov. 1 at home against New York.
