You Can’t Say I Didn’t Tell You…
It’s in the video on the main page – there was a lot of talk… at the end of the day, two deals got done and that’s the end of the 2007 NBA trade season.
Here are some of the things that didn’t happen but got close – according to the 45 phone calls exchanged at 3:05pm EST…
A For Effort- You gotta hand it to the Cavaliers – they worked the phones all day trying to make something out of nothing. At the end of the day they did not have the pieces to get Sacramento to move on Mike Bibby. The Kings will likely explore moving Mike this summer when there are more options, and do not be surprised to see Cleveland back in the hunt for Bibby in 4 months.
Miami Tried- Word is the HEAT were simply too late to the dance, word is they had Dorell Wright and Udonis Haslem on the table for Bibby, but that was not enough. One Miami source wondered aloud if that was offered for Bibby, what did Miami offer for Vince Carter and Jason Kidd?
The Spurs Played It Safe- At the top of the day it was said the Spurs were willing to trigger the “right deal” – several teams called about Beno Udrih, and Beno himself said last week his agent told him more than a handful of team were interested. Spurs head coach Greg Popovich said yesterday that he’d be hard pressed to move his “insurance policy”
Toronto Made A Move On Darko- The Raptors had a second deal in mind when they triggered Juan Dixon, and that was sending Morris Peterson to Orlando for Darko Milicic. The Magic passed on the deal, but word is Toronto may make another run at Darko this summer when he hits restricted free agency.
Lakers Thought They Had Him- The Lakers genuinely thought they had a deal for Jason Kidd last night, word was Jerry Buss agreed to send $3 million in cash and two future number one draft choices, including this year’s pick. At the end of the day it was not enough for New Jersey – who was steadfast that a Kidd deal had to involve Andrew Bynum. The Lakers are expected to add Scottie Pippen in the coming days and will be watching the waiver wires.
Dennis Johnson Dies During Practice- Former Celtic star and D-League coach of the Austin Toros Dennis Johnson collapsed during a practice today, and ultimately died. The cause is not yet known, and the news was shocking as the league tried to uncover all the trade moves taking place. Dennis Johnson was 52.
