That was wild...I had a tricked out Jeep Grand Wagoneer at the time...loaded everyone up and went cruising...the snow was so deep the town looked deserted...a lot of roads didn't even have tracks on them...I grabbed my snow skis and went skiing at 410/10 on that long slope that was there before they tore it up remodeling to interchange...

There was a Bandera Drive In, but I guess it was further out.

The Drive In you are talking about is the Varsity Drive In.

I wasn't into furniture at the time. Were you still in your gay decorator phase then? Not that there is anything wrong with that.

CC, I popped your wife's cherry on a sofa sleeper in the back of the store when I was 14.

No seriously, my mom worked there when I was a kid, she also worked at Frost Bros.

Ok...before the city built the alamodome there was a street on the east side that was known for its pros utes...and the city basically ignored it...it was the classic stereotype you see in the movies...the pimps in their tricked out cadillacs...the black girls in their hooker outfits coming out in the street and trying to wave you down...when they built the alamodome the city shut it down...

what was the name of the street?

a funny note about the San Pedro Drive In discussed a few pages back...

It had three screens, two of which could be seen by cars driving by on either San Pedro, Bitters, or West Avenue.

The third screen was strategically positioned and fenced so that it could not be viewed from the ground in any direction. Consequently they showed the "normal" movies on the other two screens but usually showed porn on the "private" screen...

ironically this "private" screen could be viewed perfectly by planes landing at San Antonio International Airport at night...the first view of San Antonio many tourists got in the late 60's and 70's was hard core porn right out the left window of the airplane as they landed...

I grew up around the intersection of Heimer/Bitters and could see the screens from my roof. I don't think the one screen you mention was always fenced (I saw "Fritz The Cat" from my roof), I vaguely remember them putting up a fence for the screen when I was in elementary school. The drive in was a lot of fun to go to. I remember seeing "Doc Savage: The Man Of Bronze", "Go Tell The Spartans", and others there.
