I have refrained from posting in this thread but I can't stop myself now. It was not a travel especially in the NBA where traveling rules were officially relaxed last year. It was a backwards jump stop. Perfectly legal.
The only issue was did he pick up his dribble before the one-count step, which then went into the jump stop. He did not.
Done.
Ahhh . I swore I wouldn't get involved in this anymore. None of this matters, except that we are basketball fans, and should know the rules of the game.
It's not spinning a foot that creates a "pivot". The NBA Rules state:
A pivot takes place when a player, who is holding the ball, steps once or more than once in any direction with the same foot, with the other foot (pivot foot) in contact with the floor.
It's the step with the other foot that creates the pivot. You can spin on both toes, as long as you don't move either foot. If you think about it, how else would a player ever square up for a shot without travelling? I haven't watched it in a long time, but I think Sean probably did it on the Memorial Day Miracle shot.
Here is the important thing about that play: Whether you believe he travelled or not, you can see what he was trying to do. Take one step, jump-stop, shoot... backwards. Nobody does that move backwards. Mbah played great defense, and was all over him - and Manu cooked that up on the fly. Take some time to appreciate true genius when you see it.

Now that's settled, I still just might consider going for that eye exam, cuz I still don't see Manu's alleged spinning foot. Maybe he's double jointed in his ankle? Too many nasty sprains? Or maybe he's just the anti-christ.. /shiver

Yep, which is why it wasn't a travel, and why it wasn't called. Haywoode Workman is the only NBA ref with the balls to blow the whistle at that point anyway.

Not sure how your analysis is exactly the same when the author states pretty clearly he doesn't believe there is a point of contention to be made.
But if we view the play from another angle, it’s clear that when Manu plants his right foot in what many are counting as his “first” step, the ball isn’t even in his hand. This step isn’t a step at all, at least not for the purposes of any kind of violation. Instead, Ginobili’s step count triggers as soon as he’s gathered and gained control of the ball, which occurs after the right foot has already been planted.
Hubie...has tremendous strenth. I like what I'm seeing here.
