NBA has the most un-exciting trade deadline of any sport. I know, I know...salary cap, etc. Still, it sucked today.

I am surprised that the Spurs did not make another move; if I understand Bruno's numbers correctly, dumping a couple of hundred thousand in salary would make the ownership group on the order of 2 million. (If I understand Bruno correctly, they are paying $300,000 in lux tax this year. If they dropped $300,000 from the payroll, they would save paying out $600,000 and collect a share of the luxury tax distribution (value ~ $2,000,000).)

Could they make such a saving by simply cutting a player - before the Playoffs cut the roster from 15 to 12.

    Consider the playoff roster
Bigs - Duncan, Horry, Elson for certain
Wings - Ginobili, Bowen, Finley, Barry for certain
PG's - Parker, Vaughn for certain

    for 9 bodies.

3 More to fill out the roster from
Bonner, Ely, Butler, White, Oberto, Udrih

3 more spaces on the roster, but not on the Play off roster. Assume 2 of the 3 non-playoff roster spaces go to the 2 projects - Butler, White. Could they cut whomever does not make the Playoff roster to save the remaining $300,000?

There are no "playoff rosters" anymore. The same inactive list rules now apply in the playoffs.

And the only way the Spurs could save any money is to get a player to agree to a buyout lower than his current deal.

i dunno, the MLB "deadline" isn't even really a deadline, trades are regularly made afterwards.

Not really, the only thing that kept Hodge in the league that long was a guaranteed rookie scale contract.
Probably the only thing keeping Beno in this league too...

He also cleared waivers and didn't exactly set the D-League on fire.
Teams with cap space typically already have enough projects and his D-League stats, while not phenomenal, were solid. Better than a guy like O'Bryant, an early first round pick. The point is, I would much rather waive Vaughn than White, who still may be of use to the Spurs in the future.

Sure there's potential, but again -- who would help win this year? White or Atkins? If Atkins wants to join, are you really willing to say "No thanks, James White might be able to play in an NBA game someday."?
I'd say "Come on board...sorry Jacque, love the hustle, but you gotta go..."

It would be foolish to dump one of the young assets the Spurs have in the pipeline when a retread vet is available for cutting. I like Vaughn's energy and hustle, but with Atkins in, he'd be my "odd man out". Probably wouldn't be the Spurs' odd man out though....I don't think anyone would be.

Sure, I'd cut either one. That's all I'm saying.

Well, there was a trade... for a different SA team.

    Silver Stars Acquire Ruth Riley
    http://www.wnba.com/silverstars/news/riley_070222.html

SAN ANTONIO, TX - The San Antonio Silver Stars acquired Olympic Gold Medalist and 2003 WNBA Finals MVP Ruth Riley from Detroit in exchange for center Katie Feenstra, the team announced today.

Under the trade agreement, Detroit would have the option to switch first round draft positions with San Antonio in 2008 if San Antonio draws the higher selection.

“We are so excited to have Ruth become a Silver Star,” said San Antonio Head Coach and General Manager Dan Hughes. “She brings championship experience, leadership qualities and talent to this growing team. Unfortunately, to obtain a player of Ruth’s quality, you have to give up quality. Katie Feenstra has been a real pleasure to watch develop in her first two years and we wish her well.”

The Miami Sol selected the 6’5” center Riley out of Notre Dame with the fifth overall pick of the 2001 WNBA Draft. In 2003, the Detroit Shock acquired Riley from a dispersal draft after the Sol folded.

A 2005 WNBA all-star selection, Riley helped Detroit to two WNBA les, most recently in 2006. She earned WNBA Finals Most Valuable Player honors following a 27-point performance against Los Angeles to help Detroit clinch the le. During the 2003 finals, Riley averaged 14.7 points, five rebounds, three assists and 3.33 blocks.

“I am extremely excited to come and play for San Antonio,” said Riley. “I’ve had a great four years in Detroit. I’ll take a lot of memories with me, but I’m looking forward to a new start, a new city and an equally great franchise.”

Riley has been to the playoffs in all but one season of her six-year WNBA career, appearing in 26 post-season games. At Notre Dame, she was named the Associated Press Player of the Year and earned the Naismith Award while leading the Fighting Irish to the 2001 NCAA Championship. Riley tallied 28 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks in Notre Dame’s 68-66 win over Purdue in the National Championship game to earn Most Outstanding Player honors.

Riley ranks sixth all-time in the WNBA in career blocked shots average (1.53) and sixth in total blocks (293). She has averaged 8.1 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.52 blocks per game throughout her WNBA career.

Active in several community initiatives, Riley recently was named a spokesperson for Nothing But Nets, a global campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa. She also spent several days this off-season in Nairobi, Kenya, taking part in the Healthy Women Healthy Economies East Africa Trip as part of the Global Business Coalition for HIV/AIDS.

San Antonio acquired Feenstra from Connecticut in 2005 in exchange for Margo Dydek after the Sun selected Feenstra with the eighth overall pick of the 2005 WNBA Draft. Feenstra finished second in Rookie of the Year voting in 2005 and was named to the league’s first all-rookie team. During her two WNBA seasons, Feenstra averaged 8.3 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.03 blocks per game.

The Silver Stars open their 2007 season at Phoenix on May 19 before hosting Connecticut May 23 at the AT&T Center. Full season and partial ticket plans are available starting as low as $49. For more information on tickets, call 210.444.5090.

Very surprising trade deadline. Nothing significant and very few small trades. Some teams needed tweaks and they have done nothing.

About Spurs : doing a trade that makes some BB sense wasn't easy (few assets available). I'm surprised that they haven't done a financial move : Spurs could have done a lot of moves that wouldn't have hurt them a lot to go under the tax and save a couple millions. Maybe Spurs FO isn't that cheap.

Now there is too the market of waived players. Players must be waived before march 1st to make the playoffs with another team. However I don't expect to see a lot of names this year in this market : players waived are often expirings who have been traded at the deadline and there has been no trade this year.

pad300 : Spurs can't waived players to go under the tax because contracts are fully guaranteed.
There are two ways to go under the tax for Spurs now :
    - A player agree to take a buyout for $300K less than his salary (as ChumpDumper said) but I don't see who will do that.
    - Player(s) suspended without being paid : a brawl can put Spurs under the cap.

BTW, I don't see at all Spurs cuting White to sugn a vet. Spurs could have traded him to another team to go under the tax and save more than $2M : they haven't done it, so they should be quite high on him.

I know it's pretty obvious by now, but here's the official word from MYSA.com...

    http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblog..._no_moves.html

    February 22, 2007
    Ludden: No moves for Spurs
The trade deadline has passed and the Spurs will move forward with the 15 players they brought home from Atlanta Wednesday night.

The team continued to explore deals for Beno Udrih and Jackie Butler up until the deadline, but evidently didn't find any deals to their liking.

Why? They won't be far enough under the cap to sign him to an offer sheet if they don't?

...if I'm not mistaken, the Raps have the cap space to at least make a decent offer...
Nope- Bosh and Ford have big contracts kicking in next season-- $12.5M and $8M.

Well it was nice to pretend we had a shot this year. I think we will give it a good effort in the playoffs but in reality we just don't have what it takes to win it all this year. Sad.
