Here is where you're wrong. You have more expertise on whether or not the Spurs have what it takes this year because you know their strengths and weaknesses better than I do, and you have to measure that against what you know of the other contenders. Whereas I know what the Mavs do well and what they don't, and I have to gauge how that stacks up against other teams. But we've both watched enough basketball in our lives to determine whether or not a team is championship-caliber or not. You only have to watch a couple Miami Heat games regardless of whether or not you're a fan to see that they stink.

No, it's a crutch whenever you're having a discussion peripheral to the Spurs excellence. If a Mav troll comes in here and plays the "Spurs are dirty and old" card, you can absolutely respond back with the "empty trophycase" or "chokers" card. It's deserved. But dismissing somebody solely because of what team they root for is almost always a sign you've lost the argument. I'm sure you guys once upon a time hated Lakers and Rockets fans pulling the le card when it wasn't relevant.

I've learned so much from your aftergame thoughts, they are very enlightening, and I love the way you put everything into their proper perspective. Then this came out. They WILL probably be fine come playoff (or maybe not) but as they stand RIGHT NOW, they are FAR from being fine. Our team blows a 20+ pt lead in our homecourt, in a mid-March game, following a 3 game losing skid, in a supposedly STATEMENT game, in one of the most compe ive race we've seen in years, against an undermanned Celtics, and we'd like to think we ARE STILL fine. Losing this kind of game is very uncharacteristic of the spurs, just as posting that overly upbeat take of the present scenario is uncharacteristic of the usual objective perspective that timvp dishes out.

Yep, Spurs are fine.
For the moment, it's far from being great but playoffs is another story. Spurs' roster is really deep this year and, even if some players don't show for the playoffs, Spurs will be fine.

I don't really care about Spurs' playoff seed. To me, the most important is that Spurs come in the playoffs well rested. The perfect case will be Spurs able to get some rest in the last week of the regular season. Spurs have right now a 3.5 games lead on the 9th seed. It's still quite a lot but things go fast in the west.

I still have supreme confidence in this group. It's not going to be easy but I wouldn't bet against the Spurs. They know how to win championships. When it's money time, I'm glad that this group is my horse in the race.

Are you the least bit concerned about them getting the opportunity to compete in "money time"? I know I am. There were glimpses even within the last four losses- against Detroit for a large portion of that game, a solid half against Boston- the problem is getting 48 minutes out of a team who really looks gassed. I have no doubt if properly rested this team can rally it up and beat any and all of the compe ion they might face. Unfortunately, this year does not afford any team the chance to just limp to the finish line...the regular season has never mattered more, not for seeding, but for just getting in. It is not a given. You can say otherwise, but just look at the standings. 3.5 games out of the nine spot ain't , especially the way this team is going. I expect they will make it, but then again I didn't expect them to be fighting just to make the playoffs at this point in the season either. Great post though. I know it made me feel better.

I would never doubt the Spurs come playoff time. However, I admittedly am angry at the four straight losses this late in the season, which is practically unheard of in the Tim Duncan era.
