Says nothing. Give me a break.

He played 18 minutes a game as a rookie. He averaged 2 blocks. His coaches and teammates and GM are raving about his off season and camp. Carter thinks he's their starter.

Here's another article, even more recent, that says as much.

    http://www.nj.com/nets/index.ssf/200..._williams.html

The news from NJ is: Nets like Williams.

They brought in some of those players to replace Krstic. It doesn't necessarily reflect on Williams.

So yes, I am "seriously looking at the situation" and my logic is fine. The Spurs aren't getting Williams for a trade exception.
No your logic is bad. Yi is the major player there. They gave up Richard Jefferson for him. The article said nothing. The article I posted says a lot more about the situation. So you are saying they needed 5 new players to replace Kristic? Not buying it. That is not to say they do not like him. Who would not like a guy who can jump out of the gym? Many guys do well in training camp, especially when Yi, Lopez, Najera and Swift all are out. It also says in the scrimmage he made a turn over at the end of a close scrimmage then hacked a guy for free throws and got yelled at. They like him last year at camp as well. He may not come to the Spurs (which I never thought he would, I just thought it would be a good fit when assessing the situation) but he will not start.

He also averaged 1.5 blocks, not 2.

Your reading comprehension is low. I said "some of those players" were brought in to replace Nenad.

And it's not that they brought in Yi to replace RJ, it's that they cleared cap for 2010. Williams and Yi are completely different players anyway.

That is not to say they do not like him. Who would not like a guy who can jump out of the gym? Many guys do well in training camp, especially when Yi, Lopez, Najera and Swift all are out.

Then why would they trade him for an exception again? So they can bring in no one to replace their injured bigs? Or, is it so they can ship away their only defensive big in favor of a roster of mostly face up post players?

He also averaged 1.5 blocks, not 2.

Whatever, I rounded up...you know, like you did. "He was the only guy in the league last year to average 2 blocks a game in under 20 (for a large portion of the year) minutes and he still did not start."

He was a rookie last season. That might have something to do with his not starting.

I'll grant the 20 to 1 stuff, but what's their lack of a 2009 round 1 have to do with anything. No one is suggesting the Spurs pair a 1st round pick with their trade exception. Why would they have to wait until 2010 for payment on Daequen Cook? I don't follow.
You think they'll take one or two second rounders for a player they picked with their #20 and cash? They're not going to just give him away.

It's a bargain rate, I know. But Riley has painted himself into a corner by a) signing Livingston and b) letting it be known that Cook is available. Besides, I'm not sure there is much of a market on Cook. The most anyone would give up is a mid to late first, and I don't see many teams doing that. A pair of seconds is a deal, but it's probably what he'll go for if they trade him.

You say they're not going to just give him away...and I'm saying if Arison will not live with tax, they'll have to give him up for less than he's worth.

The players are not out for the year, just for a week. That is why. You are acting like they have no one left. To ignore the fact the guy did not play last year with less players at his position is just not smart. Then to ignore the fact they drafted and brought in free agents in his spot is not smart. So I guess that was a ll a waste because he has been so great in training camp...

    You're making assumptions.

I'm not ignoring anything. What they'd have left after trading him may not be as good. Two recent reports, more recent than anything you've offered, suggest he's there best big right now. Why are you ignoring that?

He played 18 minutes a game as a rookie. That's "not playing", that's playing a lot. How many rookies played 18 minutes a game last season?

Yes, they have a surplus at the position but that does not equate to "so he's expendable for an exception."

There are other considerations like is he any good? How is he performing? Is it possible his value will go up drastically in the coming season? Who else on the team duplicates his role? Is he a unique player?

Questions like that lead me to the obvious conclusion that Sean Williams will not get traded for an exception. What does it profit NJ to trade Sean Williams for nothing, or at the most a couple of 2nd round draft picks? Is it probable that they'll recoup his talent with, say, a 45th pick in next year's draft? I don't see their motivation. You have to give me more than "they have a lot of guys at his position."

Might they move Sean Williams at some point? Sure. But that's not what this thread is about.

I have said that. I said I do not think they will move him for nothing, but if they are saving for 2010, have a lot of young talent at the same position, then saving 1.5M is a good deal. They could trade him, which would give them more player for player value, but that does not coincide with the 2010 plan.

These are the rookies that played more than 18 minutes per game last year:
    Kevin Durant
    Al Horford
    Jeff Green
    Mike Conley Jr.
    Yi Jianlian
    Corey Brewer
    Joakim Noah
    Thaddeus Young
    Al Thornton
    Rodney Stuckey
    Daequan Cook
    Jared Dudley
    Wilson Chandler
    Stephan Lasme
    Ramon Sessions

Shawne Williams from Indiana can be what we need in a 3 and it's realistic that we can get him with the Trade Exception cause Indiana want to get rid off him in some time
Williams was just traded to the Mavs.

Damn. That would have been a good way to use a trade exception. Guess the Spurs just never want to have that Long Three.

Indiana got more than I expected for a talented player that is maligned by bad conditioning and legal problems.

2 second round picks, cash and Eddie Jones.

I doubt the Spurs would have done more than 2 second round picks and the trade exception.

With Malik Hairston showing life, I'm not sure the Spurs will show interest in Daequen Cook. We'll see. But Williams is probably seen as a better prospect so one would imagine Cook won't fetch quite as much.

It's all moot until the Spurs clear roster spots...

Spurs could have used their TE on three SF with Carney, Balkman or Williams. they didn't.
They also haven't drafted a SF, nor signed one during the FA, nor bring a quality one for the training camp.

Right now, Spurs have Bowen, Finley and Udoka to play SF. It's not that bad but it's a short term solution. Bowen and Finley are old and Udoka will be a FA next summer and he is damn limited.

I wonder if Spurs have a plan for the future at this spot. It looks like they have given up after they missed Batum at the draft.

Yes, it's starting to look as if they are committed in some other way.

If they have a trade in place, I don't know what they'd use to bring back a quality 3. The wait continues...

The TE expires soon, if I remember correctly. If Malik Hairston doesn't work out, I'd still like to see them take a swing at Daequen Cook. If not, I don't see many more plausible candidates other than perhaps Pecherov. Or, yet another 3 point shooting big to replace Bonner and Tolliver.

The most likely option is that Spurs don't use that TE.

Saying that Daequan Cook is still a very intriguing option.
He really looks available : he is out of Heat's preseason rotation after a poor preseason and Miami still hasn't picked his 09-10 option.

I rather have him than whoever of Tolliver, Farmer and Hairston make the cut.

Not me. This would have been different a couple weeks back, but now I think Cook might become a better version of Farmer, but he's a year or two from that. He's a scorer, and little else. Cook has a higher ceiling, but I don't want to wait for it. Hairston will become a better player and have a more productive career than Cook, methinks. Between the two, I'd choose Hairston every time.

I'd rather have Cook than Tolliver, but that's apples to oranges.

Beyond this, though, there is no reason Cook shouldn't be in Miami's rotation. The fact that he isn't scares me that there is something wrong with his character, whether it be work ethic or otherwise.

Thanks to the Beno Udrih trade, the Spurs currently have a trade exception worth $1.847M that expires on Oct. 29th. This is an overlooked asset the Spurs have this summer that may help them bring in an additional piece to the puzzle.
