Yeah, the Indie ers suck. They are so -bent on being different that they end up forming their own brand of conformity. As I always said while I lived there- "all you non-conformists are all alike." Pissed themselves off something royal. But there is still a lot of great stuff in the u-district. I would also suggest trying Capital Hill, my old haunts near Seattle U. Good times!
Living in the Bay Area will definately cost you, make no mistake about that.
When I was there, they continuously shared that record with Portland. Alaska makes a lot of sense, though Seattle and Portland would win by sheer numbers in population, unless you are counting per capita.
OK, not to sound like a know-it-all, cus i am furthest from that. But I used to live in LA and went to SF often. Man, good times! But as Condemned pointed out, pricey! But the diversity and the food and wine will kick your ass!

Did you ever watch that show on Comedy Central called "Insomniac" with Dave Atell? On one episode, he went up to Anchorage to take in the "nightlife". There was footage of him fishing in a stream with a bunch of other anglers at about 2 am or so, and the sun is still shining brightly!
The sun finally went down somewhere around 4:30 and came back up no more than a half hour later! It was the damndest thing, to say the least.
He also ran into 3 girls of legal age dressed in schoolgirl outfits, but that was neither here nor there............
I went to the UK with my grandmother and cousins several years ago, and because she was trying to keep a tight leash on us, she told us in northern Scotland that we had to be back to the hotel by sundown - but over there it wasn't until after midnight when we were there in July. It was pretty surreal, I can imagine it would be even crazier in Alaska.
Yeah, I have family in the Monterey area I used to visit every summer. It is super expensive to live in that whole region, but when I'm rich and ruler of the world it won't matter.

Been on I-40 from one side of the state to the other, I-25 from Colorado to I-40 and I-10 for that 160+ mile stretch, but never got to see Taos.
Certainly wouldn't mind seeing it, though.
