Should David play against OU or any other opponent this season and suffer yet another concussion, I'll have no choice but to believe that Mack weighed uncertain evidence and let self-interest outweigh caution. And I'll use every public forum available to me for as long as I'm around to make sure that decision is stamped front and center on the Mack Brown Legacy.
well said. ash should be done for the rest of the year if the issue is another concussion.

I'm curious what everyone thinks, so question for the board...if it's determined that Ash is done for the year (or more) because of concussions, how would you handle the QB situation? Roll with Case only and save Swoopes' redshirt? Give Case the starts and mix in Swoopes? Prepare Swoopes for 2014 where he may beat out Ash?
I say let Swoopes start playing. I would rather plan the future around Jerrod Heard than Swoopes. Let Swoopes play, have Heard redshirt next year, and when Swoopes is in his senior year, Heard will only be a redshirt sop re. At that point, either Swoopes should be a highly effective player in his senior year, or Heard is ready to take over.

I say mix him in. If you go with Case exclusively, you're basically throwing in the towel. You simply can't afford to do that this year. You have to salvage what you can. If the kid is ready, you have to let him play. What if Ash gets hurt next year and you have an inexperienced Swoopes? Besides, you could use a little separation in years between him and Heard. It's early enough in the year that he can get a good amount of playing time and not really "burn" his redshirt. It would be great to have the luxury to sit him, but at this point, anyone that can play needs to see the field.
This. Case is completely worthless, and allows teams to just load 8 in the box all game long. At least Swoopes has an arm to launch downfield for the speed this offense has, as well as running ability. His upside is far greater than what Case can bring to the table, which is absolutely nothing once teams press the receivers and load the box.

This is what we can expect to see in the RRR assuming Ash is out and Case gets the start. Ole Miss finally went this route in the second half and Texas didn't score a point. Case will have trouble doing anything other than handing the ball off against OU.

I wonder if Case McCoy is actually the worst D1 QB in the nation.

If you go off of QB rating for 2013 so far, McCoy ranks 94th after Gilbert at 93 (out of 120). Gilbert was second to last in 2012.

Guess who's dead last right now? Taysom Hill of BYU who went VY on Texas. Just ridiculous.

Manziel, Jameis Winston, Mariota, Vince, Colt, Andrew Luck all redshirted - as did the vast majority of elite college QBs. Yes there are exceptions (I believe RGIII played as a true frosh) but usually the college coaches only play them due to desperation at the position.

The worst thing that can happen to a QB is busted confidence. Just look at David Ash - a guy comes out of high school brimming with confidence and then you throw him in unprepared and he gets pounded b/c it is the hardest position to play mentally and physically - then the team and Ash view himself in a lesser light due to having some poor games and that at ude is hard to get rid of. I always wonder how Ash would have panned out had he gotten a full year to develop.

You only play a guy out of desperation and that's why I'm afraid Mack does play him this year - which will be a mistake long term. Especially considering there is no scenario where it would be worth the trade to play him due to how the year has already panned out.

Mack is an absolute idiot for hiring Diaz. Mack's search process for hiring Diaz was ridiculous to put it mildly.

Mack Brown: I called a bunch of people who think I'm an idiot, and asked them who the best DC in your conference is? They said Manny Diaz, I wonder why they were laughing?

Mack deserves to get canned, and to lose all the legacy he has created.

I don't disagree with what you said, but a good thing might be to get him some playing time in a good situation much like Florida did with Tim Tiebow, create a package of plays he can run effectively.

Since ESPN has been cutting down there Texas recruiting, I'm thinking of getting a new subscription. OrangeBloods or 24/7? Price doesn't matter. Who provides the best info, not necessarily the first, but the most in-depth information? Who has the best forum and community?

Update on 2016 RB Kameron Martin of Port Arthur Memorial (24/7):

“I was told to call up Coach Porter to talk about my recruitment,” said Martin. “We talked and he sounded very happy to speak with me. He said he’s seen what I can do and has seen my stats and he said he is very impressed with me."

“We talked for a little bit,” he added. “We cut up for a while and talked about football and school. That’s when I told him I want to develop a relationship with him and the other coaches at Texas. He told me he’s going to make sure that happens.”

“I really hope they offer me,” Martin said of Texas. “There’s no doubt it would mean a lot to get that offer and it would change a lot of things. I would try to jump right on that offer. Texas is my dream school.”

“You know, they (Texas) have just had a bad start,” said Martin. “It happens. They’ll just overcome that though. It is conference time now for them. I think that now they know it’s time to buckle up and get things right. Take what comes and beat it."

“It’s sort of the same thing we are going through at my school,” he added. “We lost two games in non-district play just like they lost their two in non-conference play. We know it’s time to go out there and win now that we’re in district though. So I know where they’re coming from. Those losses they have don’t affect me or my feelings for Texas at all.”

“I would love it (to attend a UT game),” Martin said. “I hope they invite me there soon and I will be there for sure. I want to go to a game badly.”

FWIW, Inside Texas has said for two weeks that Saban, Strong and Muschamp are the top tier right now.

Shaw of Stanford was being mentioned but he seems to be a Stanford lifer until he receives an NFL opportunity.

At this point I doubt anyone knows, in 97 no one in their right mind thought we could pull Mack away from Carolina. The name everyone was taking about was Gary Barnett, e s, and Bob Stoops.

Inside Texas seems to have pretty solid insider sources on the coaching search and internal workings for those interested in following that stuff closely. I give them a lot of credibility on their sources as they've nailed several stories to excruciating detail such as the Saban news that just broke (they reported way back in January exactly what happened); not to mention a lot of other updates that have panned out as they reported.

To summarize some of their recent updates, they say that the big money donors have stepped up and have taken over on a massive 'pro-change' front and the guys that have always backed Mack (McCombs, Jamail) are finally stepping aside to let it happen as the momentum is just too strong at this point. They claim it is a given this is Mack's final year no matter how the season pans out. Also notable it sounds like Deloss and Mack will have no influence on who the next coach will be.

Also some other interesting news they reported - Greg Abbott (almost certain to be next governor) is pro-UT football and wants to bring the program back to elite level and they had some good insight on how he will likely bring some very positive change to athletics dept. It certainly helps having a guy like that in the capital instead of an Aggie that has ulterior motives.

All in all it sounds like some much needed changes are on the way - and they should be drastic.

Very interesting insights. Thanks for the update Chronic. While I am no fan of Abbott it is good to know he supports the program and I would assume the university as a whole. I certainly had my fears that somehow Perry was out to diminish UT's academic reputation.

    Thanks again!
