I think it has less to do with time than with interrupting the conversational flow.
If no one posts for 12 hours, then you were to post (for the sake of example), and then no one posted for another 12 hours... I, personally, wouldn't consider that to be thread assassination. However, if there are posts coming left and right and your post is suddenly followed by even five minutes of "silence," that's a death.
