Janet Yellen visits Ukraine and pledges even more U.S. economic aid

KYIV, Ukraine — U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen made a surprise visit to Ukraine Monday, in which she reaffirmed America's support for the country and announced $1.25 billion in economic aid for things like schools and hospitals.

The money is the first part of a new $9.9 billion package of civilian aid for Ukraine as its war with Russia enters a second year.

"Our funds help pay for emergency personnel: from firefighters who answer the call when missiles strike to medical professionals who treat sick and wounded civilians," Yellen said at a Kyiv school that the United States helped rebuild after Russian s ing broke most of the windows and doors last spring.

The battalion called upon the local civilians to stand up to Russia. In a matter of minutes of the video being released, Peskov posted that there would be no meeting/statement from Putin

Bakhmut may fall this weekend. One of the last roads was cut off today when the bridge from Khromove was blown up in early morning hours. We were supposed to go in with the White Angles to shadow them evacuating civilians from the town, but that got nixed.

From all I read Bakhmut is of little strategic value. Especially considering the number of people killed there.
But is was important from a political point of view. Both countries wanted to have bragging rights.
Putin can tell his people they "won" a battle without pointing out the costs in men. This battle has kept
Russia pinned down in one spot, there was really very little movement over the rest of the country.

Its all up to when Ukraine can put their new Western toys to use and how effective they are with the new weapons and the tactics that should be used with these weapons situationally. It seems as if the West believes Ukraine will have the capability to punch holes in various parts of the Russian line at their choosing. The summer should be a very decisive period to get a feel for how long this war continues. Some seem to think that if the Ukrainians make advances on multiple fronts, the Russians will begin to talk about peace negotiations again. And that the West will want to entice Ukraine to talk. Zelensky will then have to play an important game of talking while advancing. It seems that the ultra Nationalists in Russia will not want any sort of talks. So Putin will have to deal with them while he has given them a stage to voice their opinions when it suits his aims. This is an internal mess for Russia as much as it is a external mess. Lots of power plays are going on within Russia and not necessarily to advance the success of this war.

Now combine that with what Deadly Dynasty wrote and is being reported: Is there really a significant backlash of fighting opposition against Putin and his war. And is it for some sort of peace or piece of the pie of power? And is it ultra nationalists in nature or "stop the war, we are going to take over buildings/towns" within Russia?

There is so much to consider... This is why the famous ST hater statements of "called it!" are so ridiculous. Its very hard to know in the moment. "After the factisms" run rampant on this political board. The Corona virus was a gigantic lesson for me about playing with timelines and pretending to know after events had already taken place and what was not known at the time. It was especially popular with the red team on this board. And most of it came from FOX and the Trump Whitehouse. A very important lesson for me. Biden admin did somewhat the same thing in certain cases.
