The .40 does inflict more damage, but it's bigger and harder for me to control verses the 9mm. But some officers will tell you that the 22 is ideal for them, and are totally against 9's because it takes more shots to inflict maximum damage. But you are right, they are very similiar.

Yeah I didn't like the recoil on the .40 so I went with the 9mm. So much I bought two. My first was a Ruger P89 and then I bought a Taurus. I like the Ruger becasue with it I felt like it had little recoil and I was a sure shot with it.

That's funny they want you guys going to .22's. The best .22 I EVER had was my very first gun.....a Walter PPK.

Man if I'm in a situation I need something I feel comfortable shooting. The last thing I want to be doing is shooting at air. It's similiar shooting styles, it's just I got more comfortable with shooting the 9mm. But if the department gets their way I might not have a choice soon.

The Ruger is very reliable, it's just thats it's too blocky and hard to conceal.

I have pepper sprayed someone before, but never tasered. After the situations with people going into cardiac arrest with some officers abusing it, that is another thing they keep a close eye on. Probably because just flat out shooting someone dead, verses torturing them for minutes at a time by tasering is more humane I'm guessing...
