If we paid money to go to the SA Express-News website (like the posting of ESPN Insider stuff that happens now and again) I could see them being upset. In effect, this is free advertising and only making their sire and writers more famous. At the core of this is that, since we go to Spurstalk, and not their website, their sponsors are not getting any clicks. Which is why they have to do this, to please those that pay to advertise on their site.

How much revenue do you think ST cost them this year? How much do they earn per click, and how many clicks have we cost them? I'd wager it's less than $1k, a LOT less. And how much did their law firm charge them for that letter. I'd wager more than 1k, a LOT more.

They have to protect their interests. I suppose ST is peanuts in the grand scheme of things, but I understand why E-N's lawyers would search for people to threaten and then bill E-N for their efforts.

This is why Blackjack (or whoever it is) only posts a couple of sentences of 48MoH posts, along with a link.

I, whoever it is, post an excerpt and the link for one simple reason: respect.

Tim and the boys over at 48 are good people that take pride in their work; their fans first and foremost. McDonald comes across as never being more than a fringe fan of the team and/or league and Monroe's only made to look somewhat passable as a sportswriter because of the aforementioned.

I don't have much of a problem with Harvey, he is what he is and his material usually sparks a debate (for better or worse), and he at least has some kind of insight into the organization (that he'll usually release 3 months after the fact or when it's completely irrelevant). But with the Jeff and Mike on board ... Buck's given the benefit of beer goggles.

But as far as their 'request' to have their material taken off the site and to not have it posted in the future (well, anything with more than 2 sentences and a link), whatever . . .

This is where I go to read about the spurs and they should be lucky if an occasional article of theirs makes it to my eyes via this forum.

I'll probably never see another article from them again because I don't visit their crappy website nor purchase any newspapers. If anything I'd click on a link occasionally that went to their website on this forum. Three cheers for mediocrity.

It's funny. Now that Spursdotcom is posting the raw quote transcripts and interviews, it makes me realize that the E-N Spurs coverage is even more worthless than I previously thought.

Maybe if they had a writer of Ludden's caliber who actually, you know, wrote instead of reformatting the daily quotes and box score I wouldn't find this whole thing so laughable.

Since the Express News does not charge a fee to read their articles online ( at least they do not to my knowledge,) I don't see that it matters so much where their articles are posted so long as their writers are credited for having written them.

Free publicity is a good thing- I thought.

Can someone explain to me how this make senses for the Express News from a business point of view? I am curious.

It's not free publicity if you never go to to the website. If you haven't been going, which you probably haven't, the EN doesn't lost anything from a proposed 'boycott' or whatever. If you have been going you'll most likely still go. I personally don't but that's because I read articles posted in their entirety on forums. At some point all the news outlets will do something like this because with the paper method going out the door, traffic revenue and advertisement will need to take over as the economic model.

there is a higher probability of me reading their product when it's posted rather than when it is linked. I do see the their reasoning for advertisement purposes. If they estimate how much they charge for advertisements, by how many times people click on their website, then we should get paid for providing a link.
