There are a lot of SF and PF with good length that are projected to go on DX from the 2oth spot on down before our pick at 29.

Does anyone have a clue or a rumor about any of them falling down to our pick because of poor workouts, medical problems or team needs or investigations or whatever?

I'm hoping for a miracle like Honeycutt or Tobias Harris or Vucevic since I'm not sold on Bertans or Mirotic.

Bertans won't fill an immediate need for Spurs because he is 18 years old and has very little high level experience. Both Mirotic and Bertans are long term project who won't be able to help Spurs before Duncan retire: for Mirotic it's because of his contract and for Bertans it's because he is too young/raw.
Maybe so, but he does occupy a unique niche and does fill a position of need. We do, after all, need a backup SF. Plus, his contractual issues aren't as inhibiting as Mirotic's, so he can come over sooner, maybe as soon as next season, and begin to get experience in the Spurs' system. Hopefully if he'll get a decent amount of playing time, then by 2015, he'll have had several years to develop in a world class program against the best compe ion in the world. The same can't be said about Mirotic.

In any case, I'm just so enamored by the prospect of having a 6"10 SF on our team. To have a small forward that's as tall as if not taller than half our PF / C rotation yet still has the talent level to blossom into a player with some pretty good upside is just far too tantalizing for me to pass up.

Late first rounders are going for $3 mil?....I doubt that....maybe one in the teens, but not the 29th pick in this draft.
That's actually pretty standard. You give a ridiculously protected second rounder that will never convey, and $3M cash for just about any first rounder.

Most teams with a pick in the teens aren't going to outright dump it, they'll usually want to swap picks, with some cash and maybe second rounders involved.

nbadraft.net is projecting the Spurs will pick Kyle Singler; wasn't he projected to go in the lottery last year before he withdrew?

I wouldn't be too disappointed with that pick. Maybe he could push Jefferson for the starting spot. Or he could, if he wasn't a rookie and didn't need a season of benching to clear his head.

you can't find "help now" players when you are armed with a #29 pick and a #59 pick. you can use those picks for experienced college players with limited upside, like Danny Green, Da'Sean Butler, Malik Hairston or James Gist. Spurs already have a Green and a Butler, good chance their career will go the same direction like Hairston and Gist.
those players are good enough to fill the roster and take the #11 to #15 spot. they are not impact players, even less help now impact players.
whatever Spurs do in the draft it will be a post Duncan/Manu era move. it's probably to best to gamble on a player like Mirotic or Bertans. or Josh Selby.

btw. how could a player like Jeremy Tyler help now, a raw headcase, who hasn't even college experience and ended up in Japan???
because he could bring the vets Sushi as well as donuts?

    San Antonio Spurs

    Needs: SG, PF/C

    Picks: 29, 59

The Spurs have been one of the best drafting teams in the league since they won the Duncan lottery, and they’ll need to hit another home run this year to keep up appearances. Even after they were knocked out by the Grizzlies in the first round, this is still a team coming off a 61-win season hungry for another le. Due to their outstanding depth and Popovich’s outstanding coaching, no Spurs played more than 32.4 minutes, meaning Duncan and his gang were effectively preserved and should have enough juice left for at another 60-win season.

The Spurs’ drafting genius earned them their terrific 2010-11 regular season, with rookies and unheralded sop re contributing heavily. DeJuan Blair, a second round pick in 2010, started 65 games at PF and averaged 8.3 points and 7 boards in just 21 minutes. James Anderson shot the ball very well before he got injured, and Tiago Splitter provided a nice change of pace at center, and should be a much bigger factor next year. The real surprise, however, was 26-year old rookie Gary Neal, who provided the Spurs with the three-point shooting they so desperately needed. Undrafted out of Towson in 2007, Neal made the All-Rookie First Team.

This team is full of soon-to-expire contracts; Duncan has one year left, Parker is coming off soon after, while Blair, Hill and Neal are all free agents at the end of the year. They will have to take the best player available, and knowing the Spurs, if it isn’t a foreigner, it will be someone who’s ready to contribute right away. Kyle Singler, Marshon Brooks and Tyler

Blair and Neal are not going to be free agents by the end of the year. They both have non-guaranteed contracts.

Blair has 2 years left and Neal too.

j........ so like i said there are players @29 that can help us this year, ...
you can't find "help now" players when you are armed with a #29 pick and a #59 pick.......
    I agree with the latter
    Jeremy Tyler help right now?
    Don't think so
I'm betting money-albeit not a lot (because predicting what the Spurs will do in the draft is beyond difficult) - that the Spurs trade their #1 pick.

Don't think the #29 pick is worth a lot in trade. Could sell it, but likely they'll take a college guy they think will contribute off the bench. Jimmy Butler or Kyle Singler or someone like that.

jeremy tyler has the physical tools at 6'11 and super athletic so he can help us rigth now
Ian Mahinmi has the physical tools at 6'11 and super athletic so he can help us rigth now...oh wait
you mean, not any 6-11 guy with some athleticism will help us?
yes, because that 6-11 player fouled out long before he could even think about helping. Tyler couldn't stay on the court in the Japanese joke league. yeah man, Japan. the only interesting question would be, if he can break Ian's fouls per 40 minutes record.

I really don't understand the enamour some people have w/ Jeremy Tyler. What has he ever done outside of look "decent" during the NBA combine to garner such interest? Was he that good in Isreal or Japan? How about HS? Is there something he did in Jr high that isn't posted everywhere that makes him interesting for the Spurs?

The Spurs have already displayed they don't like immature or troublesome players no matter how good they are. Even if Tyler were to straighten up from this day forward for ever, he still wouldn't be interesting to the Spurs...

Every year people start getting wishful and/or talking out their ass and forget what team they're a fan of and what kind of players that team goes for. The rest of the year, ironically, they commend that team for their upstanding, good character players.

Maybe the sexting, gang-rape accusations, and extramarital affairs have lowered the Spurs' standards.

I get your sarcasm, yet those are either not illegal, or lead to no convictions, and were all kept well within the team's camp on the DL. But you know this.

    Tony Parker...

Great kid (I can say kid cause I'm old), Finals MVP and NBA Champion. What odds would anyone put on his winning another championship w/ the Spurs w/ the possible moves that can be made in the next 3-5 years? 10:1? 50:1? I think the world of TP but it is time for the Spurs to use his value to obtain the future.

Trade him to Minnesota w/ DeJuan Blair for Martell Webster and the 4th overall pick. Or to Sacramento for Omri Casspi and the 7th overall pick.

Duncan, the Big Fundamental. Gentleman, leader and statesman. Four time champ and 2 time finals MVP. The greatest power forward to play the game (IMO). Let's pay him his final $21.5 million (no extension or other deals), watch him play another season, and ride off into the sunset.

Start him w/ Splitter and see what they can do - perhaps get an 7th or 8th seed next year, maybe the lottery. Either way, it makes no sense to just "contend" w/ no real chance of going deep into the playoffs.

Of course. Point being, I don't think Tyler's actions are all that reprehensible. Immature, absolutely. But that doesn't preclude giving him a look based on talent (other players have been selected far higher based simply on that). I'm still not sure I'd want to give the guy guaranteed money, even assuming the Spurs were high on him.

The Spurs are expected to move #29. Plenty of teams are interested in acquiring it on draft night, but only if their guy is available.

Add the Sacramento Kings to the list of teams that like Gilbert Brown in the second round. He had a great workout with them this afternoon.

Like usual, I have no idea what the Spurs will do on draft night. With all the smoke around selling the pick + RC's comments about improving via trade, it's hard to make anything out. There are some things that work in theory, but when you are always drafting with late picks like the Spurs, it leaves a lot of room for volatility.

It's hard to imagine the Spurs keeping the pick in a weak draft, but I can also see a scenario where they trade up for a guy they really like. If it's a weak draft and there is somehow a discount to move up, a team like the Spurs with great scouts could see an opportunity to steal someone that is undervalued.
