Action Network | 2022 NBA Mock Draft, Picks & Predictions: Bets and Analysis for the Top 20 Prospects
    Brandon Anderson, June 21, 2022

But this isn’t just any top-20 mock draft — this is an NBA Betting Mock Draft.

I’ll run through the first 20 picks and assign a prospect to each slot based on scouting and intel from our Matt Moore and draft experts like Sam Vecenie, Jeremy Woo, and Jonathan Givony. But we won’t stop there. I’ll also make a correlated bet after each of the 20 picks. This is Action Network, after all.

20 picks. 20 correlated bets. Each labeled as a bet, lean, or pass.
First number is Anderson's mock, second number is consensus among selected mocks.

    Johnny Davis 9 9

No. 9 Spurs — SG Johnny Davis, Wisconsin

Johnny Davis was one of the stars of college basketball this season. He’s a high IQ player who defends hard and can score at all three levels, with a deadly pull-up jumper and a game that should translate well to the highest level of half-court, playoff-setting type games.

Davis doesn’t have one signature skill, but it’s his rounded game that makes him such a likable prospect, and that all-around game has had him linked early and often to the Spurs.

I’d love to bet on Davis to the Spurs if we get odds for it. For now, let’s stick within the Big Ten, where we can bet on the first player drafted out of the conference. Davis and Murray have high floors, but I’ll bet on Ivey’s ceiling.

Bet: Jaden Ivey first Big Ten player drafted (-225 PointsBet)
    Kendall Brown 20 29

No. 20 Spurs — SF Kendall Brown, Baylor

Brown was potential top-10 pick early in the NCAA season but fell hard as the year went on. He looked lost offensively late in the year and has a rough shot profile on low volume — but I still believe.

Brown remains top-10 on my board. He’s a fluid, easy athlete with a comfy dribble and jolting athleticism, and his IQ pops on both ends. He feels like a blank slate 3-and-D wing with huge potential ready to develop in the right system that teaches him how to shoot and play ball. Sounds like the Spurs.

Lean: Kendall Brown first round pick (+250 DraftKings)

Please guys, do sit down with a beer and a bong if you are into that.

I will be watching the draft with my wine and will be laughing when the Spurs pass on Duren, Sochan, Davis, or others to pick Agbaji and then Houstan at 20!!!!!! OMG

    My Mock

#9 - Paolo Banchero. Gives the Spurs a much needed go-to PF
#20 - Jaden Ivey. Guard isn't necessary our biggest need but Ivey represents value at 20
#25 - Jabari Smith Jr. Gives some additional ammo at PF for the Spurs.
#38 - Jalen Duren. Considered Holmgren here, but Duren gives the Spurs a successor to Jak

    I am with you.

KHOU*11 | The Ultimate NBA Mock Draft for 2022: who will your team pick?
With the 2022 NBA Draft approaching, local experts across the Locked On Podcast Network participated in their own mock draft with analysis from Audacy NBA experts, June 22, 2022

Locked On Spurs Host Jeff Garcia: "This was a pretty easy decision for me to make. The Spurs need size in the frontcourt. Duren is a big, NBA-ready body, rim protector, can run, he's athletic. He's only 19 years old and fits in well with the Spurs rebuilding timeline.

Sharpe’s scoring prowess at the high school level is enough to make him a lottery pick. But he’s a bit of a mystery after sitting out his entire freshman season at Kentucky. Perhaps the Spurs will want to invest in his long-term upside and have him follow the same developmental plan that Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell are currently on. Sharpe has flashed the will to pass the ball and has shown grit on defense. San Antonio’s system could get the most out of him.

Blossomed into a star high school prospect as an upperclassman.

    PLUSES

Blossomed physically as a high school junior, sprouting from 6-foot-4 to 6-foot-6. He’s an above-the-rim athlete who skies for dunks in space and blocks on the break. His movements are shifty and have a certain elasticity. He’s such a quick leaper that teams could use him in the half court on lobs or finishes from the dunker’s spot.

With long arms and lateral quickness, he’s able to utilize his athleticism to get stops on the ball, help in the paint, and rack up deflections.

Good ball handler with an advanced layup package. If he drives baseline and gets contested, he can soar underneath and score on a reverse from the other side. As an explosive, ambidextrous finisher, drawing more fouls and adding more craft could make him a top-tier scorer.

Shoots the out of the ball. He can drain jumpers out of isolation using a variety of moves. Off the ball, he can relocate or run off a handoff then launch. He’s a little streaky, so he’ll need to prove he’s an elite shooter rather than just a good one.

Gritty player on offense. He crashes the boards, cuts, and would probably screen if his coach asked him to. He’s able to score off scrappy plays with no wasted motion.

Willing passer who shows an effort to weaponize his scoring. For example, in multiple high school games I reviewed, he dribbled into a stepback going to his left and could have taken the shot but instead kicked it out for a corner 3. He’s a score-first player, but passes like those signal that he wants to make his teammates better.

Late bloomer in high school who went from unranked to the top of draft boards. Now he has an outside chance to become the third Canadian to get picked first in NBA history.

    MINUSES

Sharpe didn’t play basketball at Kentucky, electing to sit out the year to better prepare for next season. He already lacked significant big-game exposure in high school, so the jump to the NBA will be both a major physical and mental challenge.

Off-ball defense. He sometimes falls out of position when defending his man, leading to closeouts from rogue angles. When rotating, he’s sometimes a beat late to make a read.

Lacks experience running the pick-and-roll, which should be a staple of his offense in the NBA. He also doesn’t have the tightest handle, though he’s made enough progress to suggest that will further improve.

Shot selection can be an issue. He’s a streaky shooter who too often falls in love with his jumper. If he drove all the way to the basket rather than settling for pull-ups and floaters, his percentages from the perimeter would be better.

After selecting a wing and a forward, the Spurs now go with a guard. Washington can comfortably play without the ball alongside Dejounte Murray while also providing support as a long-term secondary shot-creator. The Spurs have never relied on one player to generate buckets anyway.

Versatile shot-creator with a great feel for making his teammates better, though he’ll unlock new dimensions to his game if he extends his range behind the arc.

    Feel for the Game

    PLUSES

Looks like a point guard who studies moves from great point guards who weren’t reliant on athleticism, such as Chris Paul, with his stutters and head fakes as he runs the pick-and-roll. He can tap or slam on the brakes, always shifting tempo to keep the defense guessing. He sees the whole floor and can make every pass, whether it’s a lob, a dish to a cutter, or a kickout.

Lethal midrange scorer who makes 52.5 percent of his floaters and 43 percent of his dribble-jumper 2s. He has every move he needs to become a potent 3-point shooter with side steps and stepbacks, though he’s made just 30.4 percent of dribble-jumper 3s at Kentucky.

Washington wasn’t asked to run off many screens to shoot 3s in John Calipari’s offense, but his ability to set his feet and launch jumpers using handoffs is an indication he could develop into a threat with or without the ball.

Lengthy defender who made progress from a fundamental standpoint throughout the season, showing increased awareness with rotations and better positioning navigating the perimeter.

    MINUSES

Lacks the explosiveness to score at the rim or draw fouls, which will put a cap on his scoring upside unless he becomes an incredible 3-point shooter. His lack of burst when turning the corner in the pick-and-roll is also worrisome.

He has yet to translate his shooting touch to 3-point range with any consistency. He made only 36.4 percent of his catch-and-shoot 3s.

He’s not a great athlete and lacks quickness, which affects him on defense when fighting through screens. He also lacks great defensive versatility.

Draft day is finally here, and the expectation is that things could begin to get wild once the Kings are on the board with the fourth overall pick. But that may be a bit late, as on Wednesday it was reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski that the Pistons and Trail Blazers have agreed to a trade centered around Jerami Grant. In exchange for Grant, the Pistons will receive a 2025 first-round pick (via Milwaukee; top-4 protected) and a 2025 second, with the two teams also exchanging 2022 second-round picks (Detroit's 36th overall for Portland's 46th overall). And this isn't all, either. Denver will receive a 2025 second-round pick from Portland, with Detroit receiving the most favorable 2026 second-round pick between Portland and New Orleans.

The exchange of 2022 second-round picks isn't a huge deal here. What is? Portland holding onto the 7th overall pick, which could be included in another trade. According to Yahoo's Chris Haynes, that selection could be used in an attempt to acquire Raptors wing OG Anunoby. With the Trail Blazers rebuilding around Damian Lillard, time is obviously of the essence with regard to building a contender. It's quite clear that the front office is going all out in its quest to construct a rotation that can be a factor in the West.

With that bit of business cleared up, let's get into the final pre-draft mock, with the betting lines offering up a major curveball in the early hours of Thursday morning. Paolo Banchero, whose odds of going first overall improved earlier in the week, was being listed on multiple sportsbooks as the favorite to hear his name called first (-200 on PointsBet, with Jabari Smith second at +120). To say that shift is interesting would be a major understatement. And the lines would shift in the opposite direction once Wojnarowski reported on Thursday that a top three of Smith, Chet Holmgren, and Banchero appeared to be "increasingly firm."

    First Round

    1. Orlando: PF Jabari Smith (Auburn)

Smith was the betting favorite to be selected first overall, with PointsBet listing his odds at -450 as of Wednesday night. And after that strange period in which we saw Banchero's odds receive a significant boost, Smith is back on top of the boards. The former Auburn standout's offensive skill set is enticing, even with the need to continue to improve his scoring in the mid-range, and he's also a solid defender whose motor cannot be questioned. Depending upon the matchup, Smith can be used at either the four or the five, and in time the three may be included if the young phenom can tighten up his handle. With there still being no concrete timetable for a Jonathan Isaac return to the court, adding Smith to the fold can help in that regard as well.

    2. Oklahoma City: C/PF Chet Holmgren (Gonzaga)

Many have viewed Holmgren as the most likely alternative to Smith to be the first overall pick, but that may not be the case based on the shift that occurred early Thursday morning. PointsBet has the former Gonzaga center at -130 to be selected second overall, and Oklahoma City would be a very good fit for Holmgren. Being able to have him progress alongside Aleksej Pokuševski would make for a very interesting watch in Oklahoma City, and the Thunder also have young frontcourt players such as Darius Bazley and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl on the roster. Fantasy-wise, the biggest concern would be Oklahoma City not hesitating to shut Holmgren down late in the season, as they did with Josh Giddey.

    3. Houston: PF Paolo Banchero (Duke)

As noted above, Banchero's odds of going first overall experienced a boost earlier in the week, and there has now been another shift in his favor. Banchero was the betting favorite to go first overall as of early Thursday morning, but that has since changed. The former Duke standout heading to Houston would make him an incredibly valuable fantasy rookie due to his playmaking ability, and the fact that the Rockets have been operating without a "traditional" point guard, with Kevin Porter Jr. filling that role last season. Also, those hoping for an Alperen Şengün fantasy breakout should not be too concerned, as he and Banchero can play alongside each other.

    4. Sacramento: PF Keegan Murray (Iowa)

This is where things could get fun. It's been reported that the Kings could be interested in moving this pick if the price is right, with Jaden Ivey (-171 to go 4th overall on PointsBet) being targeted by multiple teams. If not, who will be the best available player on Sacramento's board? A case can certainly be made for Ivey, but there are questions regarding the fit due to the presence of De'Aaron Fox and Davion Mitc . Another option would be Murray, a versatile forward who was one of college basketball's most improved players this past season. As of Thursday morning, Murray was listed at +150 go be selected here by PointsBet.

    5. Detroit: PG/SG Jaden Ivey (Purdue)

As noted in the introduction the Pistons have already been active, making the deal that will send Grant to Portland. Ivey would be an interesting fit here with the Pistons having selected Cade Cunningham last season. The partnership of Cunningham and Killian Hayes did not work, with both playing their best basketball down the stretch, as Dwane Casey did more to stagger their minutes. Ivey would be a better fit alongside Cunningham due to the combination of athleticism and perimeter shooting ability, as Hayes has lacked the latter in his two NBA seasons.

    6. Indiana: SG Bennedict Mathurin (Arizona)

The Pacers are another team that could be active beyond the draft on Thursday, as veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon's name has come up quite often in trade rumors. Given his recent injury issues, and the arrival of Tyrese Haliburton at the trade deadline, moving Brogdon and freeing up cap space could be appealing. Mathurin is a highly athletic off-guard who has made notable strides as a scorer. He defends his position well, and the tools that Mathurin brings to the table would help the Pacers account for Brogdon's exit if they were to make a deal.

    7. Portland: SG/PG Dyson Daniels (G League Ignite)

The Blazers have already made one deal in an attempt to rebuild their roster around Damian Lillard; could this pick be moved in order to make another? Daniels' defensive ability is his calling card right now, but he did show signs of promise offensively as his lone season in the G League reached its conclusion. With this being a point in the draft where it may be tough to find players capable of helping a playoff hopeful immediately, it would not come as a surprise if the Blazers used this pick in order to sweeten another trade. In fact, Yahoo Sports' Chris Haynes reported Wednesday night that Portland could look to use the 7th overall pick in an attempt to acquire Raptors wing OG Anunoby.

    8. New Orleans (from Los Angeles Lakers): PG/SG Shaedon Sharpe (Kentucky)

Sharpe is the "mystery man" of this draft class, due to the fact that he did not play at all after joining the Kentucky program in January. New Orleans has a young, talented roster that will only get better with the return of Zion Williamson, and there may not be a lot of pressure on a lottery pick to contribute immediately for that reason. Reports of how Sharpe performed in pre-draft workouts have been all over the place, with some saying that he didn't exactly set himself apart from the field, and others being highly complimentary of the young guard. Being able to learn the ropes from a guard like C.J. McCollum wouldn't be the worst thing for Sharpe, and it should also be noted that Kira Lewis Jr. is still working his way back from a torn ACL.

    9. San Antonio: C Jalen Duren (Memphis)

Duren is an athletic center who does the majority of his damage on both ends of the floor in the paint. He runs the floor well and is also a good rim protector, but the effort level has been an issue at times. San Antonio would be a good spot for him to land, between the presence of Gregg Popovich and the way in which the team makes use of its G League affiliate. With Jakob Poeltl heading into a contract year, and backups Zach Collins and Jock Landale both on partially guaranteed contracts for next season, that could factor into San Antonio's thinking there.
    20. San Antonio (from Toronto): PG/SG Blake Wesley (Notre Dame)

At 6-foot-5, 185 pounds, Wesley offers size similar to that of current Spurs star point guard Dejounte Murray. Similar to the aforementioned Branham, Wesley does need to become more consistent with regard to his decision-making and perimeter shooting, but playing behind Murray would give him time to develop in those areas. San Antonio has also made good use of its G League affiliate when it comes to developing its young players, so Wesley could see some time there if the Spurs use one of their three first-round picks on him.
    25. San Antonio (from Boston): SG Jaden Hardy (G League Ignite)

Similar to G League Ignite teammate Beauchamp, consistency is the key for Hardy with regard to his chances of being a successful NBA player. While he can be a player who scores in bunches, Hardy was a bit streaky as far as the accuracy is concerned. And as one would expect of many players his age, decision-making was also an area in which Hardy showed that there was room for growth. The Spurs have relied on the 3-point shot to the level that other teams have, most recently ranking 25th in attempts per game (and 18th in percentage) this past season. If he can improve the shot selection, Hardy is capable of being an asset offensively, which would help improve the Spurs' spacing overall.
    38. San Antonio (from Los Angeles Lakers via Chicago and Washington): SF/PF Patrick Baldwin Jr. (Milwaukee)

NY Post | NBA Mock Draft 3.0: Knicks stay put to take sharpshooter
    Zach Braziller, June 23, 2022

    9. San Antonio Spurs
    Jalen Duren, Memphis (Center)

Experts see some Bam Adebayo in the one-and-done big man, an 18-year-old rim protector capable of so much more than he showed at Memphis. The Spurs, in need of frontcourt help, go for the uber-athletic Duren, eyeing him as a replacement for Jakob Poeltl.
    20. San Antonio Spurs
Ousmane Dieng, New Zealand Breakers (Forward)

With three first-round picks, the Spurs can afford to take a big swing on a project like Dieng. There is major upside in the lanky forward prospect who did get better as his season in the Australian NBL progressed. But patience — and extended time in the weight room — are needed.
    25. San Antonio Spurs
    Wendell Moore Jr., Duke (Guard)

In each of his three seasons at Duke, Moore improved, his numbers rising across the board. Most importantly, his 3-point percentage increased to 40.1 this past season, as he evolved into a complete player capable of not only scoring at a high level, but distributing and defending. The high-IQ prospect has Spurs written all over him.

NBC Sports Philadelphia | NBA mock draft: If Sixers keep No. 23, going with an athletic 3-and-D wing
Brian Brennan, 21 hours ago AKA 22 June 2022

    9. Spurs: Johnny Davis, G, Wisconsin

The Spurs could use another offensive threat to pair with Dejounte Murray and Davis has shades of DeMar DeRozan as a mid-range scorer. Like Murray, Davis exploded as a sop re in the Big Ten, averaging 19.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. His shooting percentages weren’t great — 42.7 percent from the field and 30.6 percent from three-point range — but he was asked to carry a tremendous load for the Badgers. Davis plays with intensity on both ends of the floor and could form a dynamic two-way backcourt with Murray.
    20. Spurs: EJ Liddell, F, Ohio State

The Spurs need help in the frontcourt and Liddell makes sense as a cerebral, 6-foot-7 power forward who can bring toughness, rebounding and shot-making. He’s not going to score effectively in the post like he did in college, but Liddell is now comfortable spacing the floor, shooting 37.4 percent from three in his junior season. The Grant Williams comparisons make a lot of sense.
    25. Spurs: Gabriele Procida, F, Italy

It wouldn’t feel right to have the Spurs make three picks and not take at least one international guy. Procida is an intriguing wing scorer, a big-time vertical athlete at 6-foot-7. The Spurs can continue letting him develop overseas and hope that they have a diamond in the rough when he’s ready to come over.

Drom John | Projected stats version, modified by the too many mocks I've read
    June 23, 2022

    9) Tori Eason, Jeremy Sochen
Best available at 9 that won't be available at 20, so a slight deference to the scouts.

    20) Walker Kessler
If the Spurs only had 9, then I'd pick Kessler. Best shot blocker available in the draft in the last 20 years.
I believe the only mocks that have Kessler going before 20 also had the Spurs drafting Duren. Not picking Duren/Mark Williams at 9 should keep Kessler availabe at 20.

    25) Procida/Jovic
Four picks, I'd want a stash possibility.

    38) Hyunjung Lee
Best catch and shoot prospect in the draft. Best shooter in the history of his midmajor college. 2nd best shooter at that midmajor (who has other basketball skills than just shooting) has done pretty well.

    Trade I would like:
    9 & 25 for 13 & 15.
Charlotte gets Duren, Spurs draft the same four, but upping the chance on Kessler being available.

Duren isn't really the type of floor-spacing big franchises prefer these days, but he's such a physical specimen and great athlete that there's probably a place for him in the top 10 of this draft. At worst, he should be a terrific rim-running and rim-protecting center who alters shots, dunks everything and is good enough guarding in space.

Eason was a breakout star at LSU after transferring following a so-so first season at Cincinnati. He's a versatile frontcourt option who can guard multiple positions and punish defenses in transition opportunities.

Hardy didn't do much over the past year to help his draft stock — but he's still a first-round talent capable of developing into a special scorer. Being drafted by a strong-cultured franchise like San Antonio would probably be the best thing for the trajectory of his career.

SI | 2022 NBA Mock Draft: Jabari Smith to Magic, Chet Holmgren to Thunder
Jeremy Woo, 6 hours ago AKA 23 June 2022

    9. Spurs: Jalen Duren, C, Memphis

    Height: 6' 11" | Weight: 250 | Age: 18 | Freshman

With the 20th, 25th and 38th picks also in hand, the Spurs are in a flexible position here, able to take whoever they like most and focus on positional contingencies later. With Dyson Daniels and Jeremy Sochan off the board, the upside of players like Shaedon Sharpe or Ousmane Dieng might be tempting, but San Antonio could also turn to Duren here. This is the high end of his range, which is thought to end with Charlotte at No. 13, but he’s likely to be the first center drafted. The Spurs appear open to finding a long-term solution up front, and Duren’s youth and physical gifts make him a fascinating development proposition as someone who could anchor the interior on both ends.

Although Duren is more of a traditional center, he holds some appeal as a long-term piece worth developing, particularly as one of the youngest players in the draft. He’s a powerful leaper with a mature frame, good hands and feet, and some untapped skill
potential. Teams have long held concerns over his inconsistent motor and occasionally questionable instincts, but if he puts everything together, he could become an upper-echelon player at his position, if perhaps not a true star.
    20. Spurs (from Raptors): Blake Wesley, G, Notre Dame

    Height: 6' 5" | Weight: 185 | Age: 19 | Freshman

Keep in mind that the Spurs may not wind up using all their picks to select players, as they value the flexibility of trying to move around in the draft. If they stay here, Wesley should be on their short list of backcourt options, as a bigger guard with untapped upside who could become a downhill slasher and agile defender. They can afford to take a chance on his potential here and won’t have to rush him into big minutes right away.

Wesley didn’t have a ton of high-level experience prior to college, so he is at an early point in his development curve and has shown some flashes of brilliance. He’s still quite raw and profiles better as a scoring combo guard than a true point, but he did a pretty good job carrying Notre Dame’s offense, all context considered. He’ll need to become a more effective catch-and-shoot player and sharpen his decision-making to make a smooth transition. His range starts at No. 16 and ends in the early 20s.
    25. Spurs (from Celtics): MarJon Beauchamp, SF, G League Ignite

    Height: 6' 6" | Weight: 200 | Age: 21

As mentioned previously, the Spurs may not actually roster all four of their draft picks, but in this scenario, they grab a wing after taking a big and a guard with the first two. Beauchamp’s stock has been in flux of late, but he has enough fans around the league that he may still come off the board in the 20s. His athleticism and length would be a good addition off someone’s bench, and he’d be walking into a stable situation where he won’t be asked to overstretch himself as a scorer. He has prototypical size and length on the wing, and if he can develop into a consistent shooter, there’s a reasonable chance he becomes a nice 3-and-D rotation player. The fact Beauchamp is still somewhat raw and inexperienced for his age has been a holdup for some, but he plays hard and looks the part.
    38. Spurs (from Lakers): Gabriele Procida, G/F, For udo Bologna

NBS Sports Washington | 2022 NBA Mock Draft 11.0: Two-round, Final Edition
Tyler Byrum and Chase Hughes, 2 hours ago AKA 23 June 2022

09 San Antonio Spurs: Jalen Duren
    Team: Memphis
    Year: Freshman
    Position: C
    Height/Weight: 6'10, 230 lbs

One of the biggest knocks on one of the best athletes in this year's class is Jalen Duren's lack of an outside game. Other than that, Duren is a phenomenal traditional center with outstanding strength and rim-running ability to be a true difference-maker. It's just the lack of a jump-shot that limits how high teams aspire to take the 7-foot center. One coach who clearly doesn't care about conventional thinking is Gregg Popovich. Having a top-five talent fall to your lap at No. 9 would be a great addition to a team that needs an answer to the five position with Jakob Poeltl hitting free agency after this season.
20 San Antonio Spurs (via Raptors): Jalen Williams
    Team: Santa Clara
    Year: Junior
    Position: SF
    Height/Weight: 6'5, 209 lbs

No one had a better Combine than Santa Clara's Jalen Williams. He's risen from a mid-second-rounder to a first-round prospect after wowing executives in Chicago. Williams showed he can play in a variety of different roles depending on the lineup, primarily as a bucket-getter with a two-way impact.
25 San Antonio Spurs (via Celtics): Nikola Jovic
Team: Mega Basket (ABA League/ International)
    Age: 19 on draft day
    Position: SG/SF
    Height/Weight: 6'10, 209 lbs

Jovic would be a lottery ticket draft pick where they would bet on his long-term upside despite the fact they are ready to compete now. Jovic is very mobile for his size and has a good feel for creating his own shot off the dribble. He's also a creative passer. It may take a few years, but he's worth taking a chance on in this range.
    38. San Antonio Spurs (via Lakers): Jean Montero, PG (Overtime Elite)

My thought is the Spurs are going to go with Malakai Branham with the 9th pick. Pop knows they need shooters and he may be the best. He fits Pops small ball mentality and is that pick no one saw coming, a Spurs trademark.
    Guess I was partially right.
