The guy's averaging 8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3 assists at a new position on a team that, as you can see, can't score for . I'm not the one with view problems, .
I'm not even going to go about the scoring, because he's definitely not helping it at all. His defense is BAD, against players that are nowhere near NBA level. 3 assists a game for being a point guard would be OK if he made it up with scoring. But we know how that area is working for him. Right now, he's not being a facilitator, he's not defending his guys well, and he's not shooting well either.
Lots of work ahead of this guy if he wants to make the 1st team.

Seriously that argument is re ed....Jason kidd doesn't suck at the point guard position because he can't shoot the ball, Same thing with Hill who has been filling the stat sheet in other ways and on the the defensive ends. And his absence in this game is very clearly making the SL team much weaker. AJ was a pretty crappy shooter for a very long time. Hill can and will find a way to contribute on the offensive end when it comes down to it. And he has a better shot mechanic than either AJ or Kidd.

His shot is off which is very different from having no shot at all,
Who's talking about scoring???? His defense plain sucks. I already have seen in two successive games how his guy back cuts, and he's not even looking. Free points for the other team. Pop wouldn't stand that for a second.
I wouldn't mind at all seeing what he has as a SG. Right now, project PG needs a whole lot amount of work. Maybe more than what we can afford right now.

cant judge everything on stats. his assists are low cause we cant make shots. ive watched all 3 of his games, his defense has been at worst average, the only time he looks completely lost on D are a few pick and roll plays. are you watching these games or just going by boxscores?

3 assists is fine if no one knows where they are supposed to be. Its pretty hard to find people in good shooting position if there is relatively no offensive coordination.

He is defending very well. I don't see how you can even remotely argue that he isn't other than just not watching the games.

He dictates the offensive pace of the game. Which is all that you need to do as the Spurs point guard. Other than that he is going to be more of a spot up shooter playing off of Manu and Tim. Him missing from today's game shows just how much he contributed to getting the W than anything.

agree...playing PG without offensive structure is a nightmare. that's why i say don't judge him until he's been through training camp and indoctrinated into the system. his offense will come around and he's already solid on d and rebounds exceptionally well for a pg. i think the kid is going to surprise once he puts it all together.

Damn hope Gist didn't hurt his chances of making the roster... Looks like Hairston might not be done just yet...

How can Gist have hurt his chance? The Spurs made there only run of the game with Gist leading the way. And he still lead the spurs in points and showed he could hit from outside...I don't think Gist did anything to lessen the case for himself.

gist will be on the squad come training camp. i think he has proved himself. if he continues to play well, he may even be a rotation player if he continues to progress during the season.

Solid? What games are YOU watching? Bad switches, wrong rotations, losing track of his guy. Maybe I'm expecting too much from him, I don't know. I thought he was going to play 15 mins or so a game on the NBA? Playing that kind of defense will earn him minutes in the Toros or Pop's doghouse, whichever is closer.

3 assists is fine if you're also not averaging 3 TOs per game. Bottom line.
I already wrote about his defense in an earlier post. Again, maybe I'm expecting too much from him. But if he's gonna play 10+ minutes/game in the NBA, he's gotta do a whole lot better defensively.

    ?

Hill's defense has at worst been average. At best, he's been a lockdown defender. He can pressure the ball, isn't affect much by screens and he has a ton of deflections so far. He's also very quick at picking up the loose balls. His defense is already good enough for the NBA level and should continue to improve.

Now his offense is a different matter altogether. But he's played very solid defense.

All in all, I'd agree that Hill played good positional defense and excellent transition D. He has let his man get away and go back door a couple of times but in the two games I've seen Hill play, he had active hands and his help-side D was very good. He just can't shoot. Perhaps the poor defense he played was in game 2 versus New Orleans. I didn't see that one.

That's the beauty of Hill playing in the summer league. He's gets burned by a backdoor cut or two when the games don't count, so that come the regular season he's got a better understanding of what not to allow happen. It's called learning.

All in all, I'd say Hill's defense has been very promising. He looked quick enough to stay in front of Nate Robinson and OJ Mayo, he's a willing helper and comes back to the paint for rebounds. getting burned for 3 or 4 possessions in 4 games isn't bad at all for a rookie. Saying that his defense has been poor is just plain ignorant.

Rondo had that problem of losing track of guy too . see how rondo plays the solid D now ? nothing can't be improved

How did Gist look up close? Could you tell why Bud got mad at him a few times?
I think I was busy negotiating the insides of the T&M when that went down, and I was behind the stanchion opposite the Spurs. Gist looks really long and lean though. Got a pic or two of him pounding the ball on the perimeter. I'll post some while I'm waiting for my plane.

Oh and does Hairston look as lazy close up as he does from far away?
He works on offense at least; some of his jumps and bursts of quickness were surprising, but didn't happen often enough to be counted upon. Seemed to be giving a little more effort on D than in previous games, but not an impressive amount.

how many practices with the team has he had to learn the defensive scheme? i'll help you out, more than likely 0. so how can you have the expectation that he knows all the nuances of the complex defensive scheme that we have?

you do realize that he's d'ed up mayo and basically shut down nate. and he's doing that on his instinct alone. put him in the spurs system, he's going to be an above average defender.

have you ever played organized basketball? because if you did, you'd understand that rushing to judgment over some summer league pick-up games is premature.
