He's no longer good enough at the thing he was good at and he doesn't have any roleplayer skills that help the team, that is why he's such a negative. He has only one style that he can be successful with and he's no longer good enough in a consistent basis with that style to warrant him being in it. He doesn't space the floor for others being a reluctant shooter, he doesn't cut, he is not a positive defender, he's a poor off the ball player. He's a ball dominant, diminutive scorer, who is no longer good enough at scoring to be taking possessions away from the team in that way. Yes, he can set up Aldridge, and has improved his passing. But the Aldridge PnP are not great offense. They are probably one of the reasons the Spurs have not been explosive scoring and I would rather see Lamarcus go to the basket himself and be aggressive than have a PnP LMA for Tony's sake. At least when he's aggressive Aldridge can draw fouls and put pressure on the rim.
Tony will be hard to fit in moving forward and maybe the Spurs move him permanently to the bench, but he doesn't fit with them. The bench guys right now don't suit him. He can't play with Anderson, Simmons, Lee and sometimes Dedmon there. It may in a very low key way, one of the reasons Gasol is shooting more 3s than ever and is now playing with the bench.
He can't play with Forbes who is a poor defender who can shoot the 3 and is more suitable for a Patty Mills role. Patty/Tony and Tony/Forbes are unworkable together. It may very well be one of the reasons Patty should also not be reupped (money issues aside, Tony and Patty can't play together and Tony should be in a bench role at this point).
If Tony plays with Dejounte, he takes the ball away from Dejounte. And the thing is all those other guys are suitable roleplayers for their roles and salaries. They all bring something in very cheap contracts, young legs, have been healthy and available to play (Dijon's groin injury was a shame but he was healthy most of the season riding the pine). Within the roles they have played they have been positive contributors or at worst, adequate. And this is coming from young players who don't play regularly to get rhythm and chemistry with teammates.
Other guys contribute rebounding, defense, and playmaking within the offense enough to still manage to be positive impact players for the team. That is more than Tony is currently managing.
Tony's ship is sinking fast and he's taking the Spurs with him sadly. And it's not new either. This has been a long time coming since his sharp decline as an elite player in the 2014-15 season.
I am not a Tony hater... I wish this wasn't so, bc the Spurs don't really have starting quality PG to supplant Tony with and are making do with different lineups and Pop still testing guys out there, with Mills and sometimes rare no PG lineups too. I think Pop is not blind and is seeing what is going on but he has no alternatives that are palatable enough for him and he has relied on Tony for too long. He comes in and gives some flashes "pulling Pop back in" like he does with Mid, and so Pop stays the course.
Bottom line:
TL DR: He's no longer a starting caliber PG and having poor roleplayer skills, he will be tough to fit in moving forward to put it kindly.
