Looks like it was a win win deal for all.
Sources: Pau Gasol gave back $2.5M in his contract buyout with the Spurs to join Milwaukee, lowering San Antonio’s salary cap hit for this season and 2019-20.

Looks like it was a win win deal for all.
Hopefully his Bucks salary will count against what we owe him next year, assuming he plays of course.
PATFO stays making power moves. He will be off the books in 2020 when they can go after big free agents
Spurs would've had more cap space if they just kept Gasol and stretched the 6.7 million over 3 years, but Pau wanted to play so they did him that favour
yeah those 527K he's getting paid by Milwaukee should give us some more cap space to sign a G-League player
Don’t understand Why people are complaining about this deal. There is no reason why gasol should give the spurs some money back and he gave us 2.5 million : not a lot but better than nothing.
The only thing the spurs could have done, was stretching Pau guaranteed money but even if they do that they wOn’t have enough money under the cap next year.
The moove is good for the team.
Even if they stretch Pau salary they will not have enough To do something, it’s Better To go over the cap with gay cap hold and have the MLE next year.
Spurs aren't going to operate as a below the cap team; it makes sense for them to stay over, re-sign Gay, use both picks (19th and 29th currently) and possibly use the full MLE of $9 million. Gasol giving back $1.5 million next season could be the difference between paying the tax and staying under, depending on how much the Spurs give Gay.
I think he had to give back money this season, in order for the buyout to occur. Spurs should have held out for more savings from his guarantee but paying out $5.1 is better than $6.7 and is almost certainly means they aren't going to stretch his remaining money because they shouldn't be in the tax.
If Gasol didn't want to keep getting DNPs and get brought out, then he did have to give money back tbh. Streching Gasol is a bad idea, they could eat his $5.1 million, add both picks to the roster, bring back Gay and use the full MLE and stay underneath the luxury tax line of $132 million.
Agreed. $ 9 million is a lot for a playoff team to have to play with, every other playoff team in the west will only have access to the taxpayer mid-level besides Utah and LAC. Spurs could get a useful player for the full MLE.
Help deliver a championship?
Help? Championship?
Oh Pau,you delusional old fart...
#FearTheDeerInTheHeadlights
crofl he’s beyond useless nowadays. Yeah good luck with that.
top 5 TOSB spur of all time, king of the euro s and emblematic of poop's obsession with soft and slow useless punching bags in the post.
Thankfully not Gasoft
He has been beyond useless since leaving Chicago. Still can't believe how much people here gave me for cheering for his injury.![]()
Incoming 5-game losing streak for Milwaukee.
He did carry Kirby to two les tbqh.
Lol this delusional . So glad he’s gone
It's going to be interesting to see how he does for Milwaukee.
Not much tbh
He did.But it was almost a decade ago.
He should know the limitations of his own body.
If he could actually help a team, not in something so extreme as a championship, but even improve their playoff odds,or fill a hole in someone rotations, the Spurs would have found a trade for him 2 hours after he requested to be traded.
Pop wouldn't have to call Bud and say "Mike can you please tell Pau you'll sign him if he agrees to a buy out? He's starting to piss me the off"
This precisely. Spurs will wait one more offseason for cap space. Had Gasol given all of it back (why would he ever), they wouldn’t have had enough to sign anyone of consequence with that ~$10 million in space. Better to keep Gay using the early bird rights + sign someone to the MLE.
The only reason to stretch is if you have big plans in FA. But they don’t, and stretching him wouldn’t give opportunities either. So why sacrifice cap space for the two years after?
This buyout just proves what an idiotic contract RC Buford offered in first place, and other series of awful decisions like derozan trade and other .
Its more than enough to take the keys away from this awful PATFO that still thinks we are in the 80s
Gasol is that used car you buy that you think is a pretty good deal until a month later when the transmission goes out and it would be cheaper to buy another used car.
