No, but you can name numerous outside players
Getting Ely would be spooky. Butler and Ely were TimVP's top two guys on the post-Przybilla list of bigmen.
Still, spooky or not![]()
No, but you can name numerous outside players
I'll throw this name out though........Malik Rose
I assume if Denver does nothing, it means he's a Spur. It's almost 6:00 PM in New York where the NBA offices are.
Rose played in San Antonio during his prime. You can't tell what he would have done outside of San Antonio.
Every bigman who has come in has played worse next to Tim Duncan.
That's why getting a rebounding specialist like Reggie Evans makes the most sense, rather than expecting someone to come in and play an all-around game.
Not actually true- if you check FG%.
Spurs who had a worse FG% their first year here than their previous year elsewhere:
Steve Kerr
Michael Finley
Brent Barry
Hedo Turkoglu
Stephen Jackson
He was 28 or 29 when he left, right? Most players aren't washed up at that age.
edit: if my math is right, he had just turned 30 a couple of months before. Even still -- 30 and 2 months usually isn't the end of anyone's career.

You and I DEFINITELY agree on this notion. The Spurs have a very limited and specific role that they want the big man to fill. Rasho did not fit into that particular role- no matter how much he was willing to accept it and no matter how hard he tried. Besides his BB IQ and his ability to play position defense, he did not utilize his all-around game in this system. The Spurs are better off with a "garbage man" who rebounds and gets easy baskets inside. Nazr possibly could have filled that role, but I don't think he was willing to accept it. The Spurs are better served by a specialist who actually fits that role and will accept it rather than getting an all-around player and trying once again to shove that square peg into the round hole.
well how many are there to choose from? starting wise all you have is robinson, rasho, and mohammed. If you want to add bench players than you have rose (who i wouldnt consider a center anyway), willis, massenburg, oberto. Am i missing someone? you can make excuses or arguments for all of them.
I agree though that duncan takes care of the offensive end, we just need a defensive presence with good rebounding. Evans will get you those boards, but i dont know if hes smart enough to be a defensive presence (Nazr part II?)
Rasho's defense with Nazr's rebounding... Can it be found??
Apart from Duncan Butler probably is or will become the most gifted low post player the Spurs have had since forever. It will be interesting to see how he and Duncan play together. At worst he will give the Spurs the best post scoring option when Duncan is taking his break that the Spurs have had.
I think Rasho wanted to fit the role the Spurs wanted him to fill but he was always just too passive. He could just never be totally aggressive. Even defensively, his man-to-man defense and his boxing out got so poor that Pop couldn't play him against physical teams. I don't know if Rasho's problem was a lack of effort, a lack of toughness, a lack of heart or what. At times, he'd play exactly like the Spurs wanted him to play. The problem was that 95% of the time he didn't.
Nazr was just too dumb to ever figure out what the Spurs wanted him to do. That said, he fit well enough that the Spurs would have taken him back at the right price.
Hopefully Butler has what it takes to be successful next to Duncan.
I totally agree.
I'm just confused on the 'sweating' part.
Are the Spurs sweating in the hopes that Denver will match and get them out of free agent signing ?? That's what I would think.
Kind of like that girl you ask out that you met in a bar when you've just broken up with a girlfriend and you're a little too drunk. Then you spend the next (sober) day trying to figure out the most polite way to blow her off, and just praying she spares you the confrontation and never calls you. The Spurs are undoubtedly questioning themselves about the Elson offer.
Pop: *rubbing his eyes after waking up the morning after making the Elson offer*
"Damn. Shoulda passed on opening that 3rd bottle of merlot yesterday." "Strange. I vaguely remember extending a multi-year offer to Fran ingcisco Elson for over half the MLE. I'm glad it was all just a bad dream." "I think I'll logon to Spurstalk to see who else LJ recommends that we pursue at the 5 spot."
From espn.com

With Nene signed, the Nuggets had little reason to keep restricted free-agent center Francisco Elson. Denver was expected to let the deadline pass at midnight Thursday without matching San Antonio's two-year, $6 million offer to Elson, who proved invaluable when Nene was sidelined last season.
It all depends on what the Nuggets have cooking on the trade front. I think everyone but Nene and Elson (for obvious reasons) are available in the right deal.
So if that ESPN statement is accurate, welcome aboard Elson.
Yeah, I honestly don't know what the Spurs were thinking. Over half the MLE for a guy who isn't even good enough to be considered a quality backup center. Elson is a good 12th man who you play if your team is destroyed by injuries.
I'd like to know what the Spurs are thinking right now. Perhaps they are with the rest of the civilized Spurs fans who are hoping Denver matches. Butler was a longshot that came thru ... maybe now they'd rather have the $3M to go get a real NBA player.
Oh and Pop if you are reading this, Reggie Evans would be easily available if Denver by some miracle matches your offer![]()
Anybody catch any of Denver's Ricky Sanchez in SL. He's young, 18 I think, and very skilled. I would think the NutGets would keep him around before Elson.
It makes no sense at all.
You can find that Elson sucks, that he will be way overpaid or that it's the worst move of Spurs history.
But facts are that Spurs have made this offer to Elson : Elson for $6M/2 years is a good signing for the FO.
More than half the MLE for Elson is a bad move no matter how many or how few years he gets.
It's your opinion.
Spurs FO opinion is that it's a good move.
The Spurs FO wasn't expecting to have Jackie Butler on board. I bet if they could, they'd rescind the offer to Elson.
Or at least I hope they would.
They need 2 centers.
They signed them both to offer sheets on the same day. What makes you say they weren't expecting to have Butler?
Go back and read when they extended the offer.
Thanks.
