Lions sign OG Piller, closing in on MulitaloBy Len Pasquarelli
    ESPN.com

Determined to be tougher and more physical on the offensive line in 2007, the Detroit Lions have signed former Tennessee ans guard Zach Piller and are closing in on a deal with onetime Baltimore Ravens standout guard Edwin Mulitalo.

    Piller

Both players were released by their former teams earlier this month.

Piller signed a one-year contract with the Lions worth $760,000. Detroit officials have been negotiating a multiyear contract with Mulitalo.

Concerned by injuries that prematurely ended two of the past three seasons for Piller, and reluctant to pay a prohibitive base salary to a player projected as a backup in 2007, the ans released the eight-year veteran early in the signing period to give him a chance to meet with other teams.

Piller drew interest from three other clubs.

A third-round choice in the 1999 draft, Piller is a strong in-line blocker with a blue-collar mentality. But the former University of Florida standout appeared in just 20 contests over the past three seasons and the scheduled base salaries on his contract in Tennessee were $3 million for 2006 and $3.5 million for 2007.

Piller started all 16 games in 2003 for the first time in his career, then suffered a left biceps injury in 2004 that limited him to one game. After coming back to again start 16 games in 2005, Piller appeared in only three games last season because of a left ankle injury. In his eight seasons with the ans, Piller appeared in 87 games with 58 starts.

Mulitalo, 32, is an eight-year veteran who spent his entire career with the Ravens, but saw his 2006 season prematurely ended by a torn triceps in the fourth game of the year. The former University of Arizona standout was a fourth-round choice in the 1999 draft.

In eight seasons, Mulitalo appeared in 106 games, with 102 starts. From 2000-2005, he started 14 or more games every season.

Second arrest in seven months for BrownESPN.com news services

AUSTIN, Texas -- Former Texas cornerback Tarell Brown is facing his second misdemeanor charge in seven months after being arrested and charged with marijuana possession, the Dallas Morning News reported.

The newspaper reported Brown, who is hoping to be selected in next month's NFL draft, posted bond and was released from the Williamson County Jail on Friday after being charged.

Brown's attorney, Jamie Balagia, told the newspaper that Brown was a passenger in a car that was pulled over on a routine traffic stop Thursday. Police discovered there was an outstanding arrest warrant for the driver and found a plastic baggie containing marijuana residue, Balagia told the newspaper.

"Tarell Brown had nothing to do with the residue found by police. It belonged to the driver," Balagia told the Dallas Morning News. "But in Williamson County, they arrest everyone in the car. Brown doesn't do drugs, has never done drugs and plans on taking a drug test to show everyone exactly that."

Brown still faces a misdemeanor weapons charge stemming from an incident last fall, which forced him to miss the Longhorns' game against Ohio State due to a one-game suspension.

Last September, Brown was a passenger in a car driven by former Texas linebacker Aaron Harris that was pulled over by police.

According to police, they found marijuana in the car and Brown in the back seat in possession of a gun owned by Texas linebacker Tyrell Gatewood.

Police brought marijuana possession charges against Brown and Gatewood, who was also in the car at the time, but dropped them when Harris said the marijuana was his.

NFL | Committee will propose penalizing players who e the ball
    Sat, 24 Mar 2007 09:30:23 -0700

Chris Pika, of AtlantaFalcons.com, reports the NFL's Compe ion Committee will propose penalizing players who e or throw the ball after plays on the field. Touchdowns will not be subject to the proposed five-yard penalty. " This is an issue that has really shown itself in the last two years where it seems like every play -- whether a three-yard gain or a 15-yarder -- results in a player stepping up and ing the ball," Atlanta Falcons general manager and committee co-chairman Rich McKay said. If a player ed the ball after gaining a first down, the ball would be moved back five yards but it will still be first-and-10.

NFL | League will revise injury reports
    Sat, 24 Mar 2007 09:14:56 -0700

Kevin Seifert, of the Star Tribune, reports the NFL is planning to improve its weekly injury reports after several teams questioned the existing method and protocol. Atlanta Falcons general manager Rich McKay said the new system will require teams to reveal each injured player's practice schedule. If commissioner Roger Goodell approves the new format, the old classifications of probable, questionable and doubtful will be de-emphasized. Under the new system, teams will list the amount of practice in which injured players participate on Wednesday and Thursday of a game week. On Friday, the teams will designate each players as probable, questionable, doubtful or out.

    Cowboys | Injury update: Owens
    Sat, 24 Mar 2007 07:19:43 -0700

Rob Phillips, of DallasCowboys.com, reports Dallas Cowboys WR Terrell Owens' (finger) recovery from a second finger surgery is going "very well," according to owner and general manager Jerry Jones. Owens could join the team in Dallas within the next few days. The team will begin their offseason workout program Monday, March 26, but the surgeries on Owens' ring finger could prevent him from catching passes in the minicamps. Jones believes Owens will have the cast removed next week, but doctors will want him Owens to limit his travel once it comes off.

They didnt announce what Denver would have gotten, but I heard it would have been back-up defensive end Justin Tuck.
The Bears are either going to ask Mike Brown to move, or release him, he is very good, but very injury prone. And yes, she does vbookie regular season games. Let me see if I can find that Mike Brown article....

Based on what newly acquired safety Adam Archuleta has been told by the Bears, he has been given Mike Brown's job. Which means that Brown, a Pro Bowler in 2005, will either be cut or moved back to free safety.

D.D. Lewis is a free-agent and I know he's looking to play somewhere in Texas. He's a fast, smart, linebacker that has had some injury problems. He's the odd man out with the Seahawks, but I think he would be a good pickup for any team. He would be a real cheap signing and if he stays healthy, I'm sure he could contribute.

    Biggest offseason news yet:

A source with knowledge of the situation tells us that ESPN is yanking analyst Joe Theismann from Monday Night Football. Earlier this year, the network said that the lineup for the weekly NFL broadcast would returned unchanged in 2007.

Per the source, the likely replacement for Theismann is Ron Jaworski, who performed well (despite wearing ladies' glasses) during the back half of a season-opening Monday night doubleheader and who currently is handling booth duties for the ESPN/ABC coverage of the Arena Football League.

It's unknown whether Theismann will be reassigned to other ESPN NFL-related shows, or possibly to ESPN's college football coverage. After Mike Patrick and Paul Maguire weren't shifted with Theismann from Sunday night to Monday night, Patrick and Maguire landed with the network's NCAA broadcasts.

The problem, as we understand it, is that Theismann received a lucrative contract in the waning days of Mark Shapiro's tenure, and the network is unlikely to eat the balance of it. We're told that there are at least two years remaining on the deal.

Per a source with knowledge of the in-house dynamics at ESPN, Theismann and Tony Kornheiser didn't mix well, and there's a school of thought that Kornheiser would be better without having to worry about tiptoeing on eggs s with Theismann. (And we agree with that. Completely.)

The information came to us in response to an item we posted earlier on Saturday indicating that ESPN had offered a spot on Monday Night Football to former Cowboys coach Bill Parcells.

    Stay tuned.

Rams pick up veteran cornerback WallsBy Len Pasquarelli
    ESPN.com

For the second time in two weeks, the St. Louis Rams have added a veteran cornerback to compete for playing time in their nickel and dime coverage packages, reaching a one-year accord with unrestricted free agent Lenny Walls.

    Walls

The five-year veteran, who played for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2006, is a big, physical cornerback (6-foot-4, 195 pounds) with potential, but a player whose career has been slowed by injuries.

Last week, the Rams signed former San Francisco first-round cornerback Mike Rumph, a player similar to Walls in terms of size and misfortune, and the St. Louis coaching staff is hopeful one of them will contribute in 2007. St. Louis lost cornerback Travis Fisher in free agency and needs to replace him.

Walls, 27, played his first four seasons in the league with the Denver Broncos, then signed with the Chiefs last spring.

He entered the league as an undrafted college free agent in 2002, and the former Boston College standout won a starting job in Denver in his second season, starting all 16 games in 2003. But he missed nine games in 2004 with a shoulder injury and nine more in 2005 with a strained groin, and eventually fell out of favor with Broncos coaches because he couldn't stay healthy and on the field.

With the Chiefs in 2006, he played primarily as a situational cornerback and on special teams, although he did make two starts, and finished the year with 29 tackles and five passes defensed. For his career, Walls has 127 tackles, one interception, 24 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and one recovery.

Financial details of his one-year contract were not immediately available, although it is believed to be for the veteran minimum base salary.
