Lance has a point, but then he doesn't.

He questioned the placement of the information that they never saw him dope. The way he makes it sound, the info was buried deep in the story. Now, while it might have been on the jump page, it wasn't buried.

It's eight grafs in. You could argue for higher placement, but you would have the same strong argument for its current placement.

What I might have done (and I've only read it online, I haven't seen the page) would be to use a subhead to say they never saw Lance (and a subhead would work since the headline says "2 Ex-Teammates of Cycling Star Admit Drug Use").

I think a subhead with the "not seeing him" info would work for this since the lede has Lance's name in it and the headline says "Cycling Star."

I'm not a Lance fan, because I suspect there's something to the allegations (admittedly there's no proof), but I lean towards his side in this argument.

Basically, the only reason there's a story, or at least the only reason the story was so prominantly featured, was because of the connection to him. Therefore it's disingenuous to not have the fact that there's no proof of his involvment stated as early as possible. What you recommended regarding the subheading work work. Otherwise I think it should have been the second or third thing mentioned.

To prepare for his big date, a young man went to the rooftop of his apartment building to work on his tan. Not wanting any tan lines, he sunbathed in the nude.
