I'm less concerned about Sarr's shooting. The team will work on getting his spots. It's more that he's slight and shorter than you'd want and not a supreme shotblocking threat or great rebounder. I think he'll be fine, and am glad the Wiz picked up Valunciunas, but he might pale compared to Clingan or Edey for a while.
He wants to be a jumbo wing, but doesn’t have the skillset. He has the skillset of a rim runner/shot blocker, but shuns that.

That point differential suggests that this could be a bit of a mirage...
Also, can someone explain to me why we are in 4th, rather than the Heat, who are also 3-0 and have a better point differential? (In fact, why aren't Miami first overall, having a 3-0 record and the best point differential?)

This was just a quick screenshot from ESPN, not sure how the overall standings work for SL.

The summer league has a points system based on quarters won which is used for tiebreaking purposes, I believe. You get 1 point for each quarter you win, 0.5 if tied, and nothing if lost.

the point differential points to the coach being really good at game management. also our team is winning with defense the shooting is barely adequate.

summer league le means squat. it's a war of attrition with most teams shutting down their keepers before they even get to the 3rd or 4th game. it comes down to a rec league tourney by the end.

Memphis just won today as well, so they are 4-0

    Clippers play tonight

    Spurs/Warriors/Heat play tomorrow

And will wind up with half of Spurstalk wanting Speedy Claxton's dad as point guard for the Spurs.

Anointing Reed Sheppard the best player in his class may have been premature.

if you know anything about summerleague games, you know it matters how you start, not how you finish.

Did you watch the game? I'm guessing you didn't. Every problem was on display. Couldn't get past his man; Dix had him completely jammed up, wasn't athletic or skilled enough with the handles and was very much controlled, lots of turnovers, not able to even get his shot off. On defense, could not stay in front of players. Most of his production was late when Minnesota relaxed their D.

The good things were still in evidence. He doesn't pout, keeps playing. Still makes great individual plays with his hands and is disruptive. Really nice connective passer.

I get it -- you didn't watch and are just scanning box scores. If you did watch, you have no idea what you're seeing. Everything said about him before is still true. He's not a point of attack player, he's not a defensive stopper. He's a supreme role player, which is what can really work for Houston. He's going to have games where he breaks out because of the gravity other players get (Cam Whitmore, in previous games), and he's going to put up stats because he's a smart, good player, but he's very much not likely a star in the making.

I have more or less the same opinion on Sheppard.

He would've been good for us because we desperately lack elite shooters, but idk about his long-term fit.
If we assume Devin will be the starting SG for the foreseeable future, we'd really lack ball security and playmaking with Sheppard.
On defense, neither him nor Devin would be good enough to be POA defenders, but you wouldn't want to crossmatch them on wings.

I just don't see guards shorter than 6'5-6'6 worth it if they're not projected to be great in two out of three important aspects. Playmaking, Shooting, Defense.
With his size, Sheppard just can't be a great defender and if he doesn't become an all-time great shooter, he's not going to be anything more than a solid starter.
High floor, low ceiling if he's not the next Steph.

I think Sheppard would be excellent for us... if we already had Castle.

I just feel like Castle is going to be much more impactful as an attacking guard, plus his POA defense projects to be at least very good. I don't want to say he's the opposite of Sheppard in those ways. I think Sheppard might be a better passer, but that Castle can break free and do a lot of damage getting into defenses where Sheppard may struggle. Obviously Sheppard is a much better shooting threat, just that Castle's size and attack will be a potential menace. He could develop into a primary. And then on defense, Sheppard is very disruptive and comes up with steals and wins possessions, but Castle may blanket guys.

Maybe I'm too optimistic, but this short glimpse in SL has confirmed the UConn stuff that Castle's combination of size, skills, and smarts are going to be very effective. Dude is just super-strong and big at the position and already uses that stuff well. If he starts clicking in a couple years, I don't think opposing teams will want to deal with him at all, especially while having to deal with Victor.

Technically he didn’t finish 9-12 after an 0-5 start. That’s impossible. I think he meant shot 9-12 after starting 0-5. He finished 9-17.

That said i still like Shepard a lot.
