Ben makes sense, because no way Kate would want to go, yet Jack would want to go because he realized Ben was right about making a big mistake, and can respect Ben for that now.
here's a thought, maybe Juliet was in the coffin? that may explain why no one was there. no one trusted her from the island. and also Jack was obviously not with her anymore....

No. This is DEFINITELY a flash forward to when they get off the Island.
Helicopters will come to rescue them like Desmond said, but I think some may choose to stay (Lock for sure, maybe Bernard and Rose). Jack's life obviously falls apart when he gets back to the mainland and he attempts suicide. it might be Ben in the coffin, but it might be someone Jack killed drunk driving. Kate is with Sawyer and that's who she has to get back to. Jack now wants to go back to the Island and I think he and some of the others might if their lives also fall apart.
Why would Ben leave the island then? Jack said he was going to kill him anyway![]()
I don't think Ben had much of a choice. Maybe Jack wanted to drag him back to the mainland and kill him there just for spite. Now Jack's a murderer and wants to run back??? I don't know. I'm not sure it matters that much whose in the coffin. And I hate Jack btw. I'd much rather see Kate stay with Sawyer.
I don't get it, if those were flashes from the future, then why did Jack make a reference to his dad when he talking to that other doctor. Remember he was like "well get my dad in here and if I"m not as drunk as him then you can;t fire me." or something like that. But his dad is dead....
yeah i think that was def from the past...of course maybe that is what they want us to think
But he had that band aid on his forehead in both scenes.
It had to be a flash from the future because Jack was talking to Kate about the Golden Ticket that Oceanic Airlines gave all of them because of the crash. I don't know how his dad is still alive.
I found this on a Lost board. The name of the funeral home "Hoffs/Drawlar" is an anagram for Flash Forward. Crazy.
I bet you anything Ben was in that casket, as others have pointed out. But there's always a chance of it being someone else, but Kate showed disgust after Jack wanted her to go to that funeral. I am sure they bring 'home' the eventual dead body of Ben.
What a finale. I can't believe how great this show is. Only 48 episodes left, and I bet many do the "future-past" approach. I'd love to see what happens AFTER these guys leave the island. I hope everyone's life doesn't go downhill after they leave, but I bet that's what is going to happen to most. Would you want to leave back home when you have nothing left? I personally loved the Jack future-flash (present-time?) because it showed that many of these Losties truely don't have anything to go back to.
Chances are Michael and Walt are on that boat, thus why Walt was there with Locke? I know Walt showed up for Shannon, but he did talk backwards and I believe that was a 'vision' of Walt, like him being mirrored onto the island.
Kate may not be with Sawyer, there's always a chance between her and Kevin still, maybe. That'd be very interesting if they went that way.
Another neat theory: I bet Locke *becomes* Jacob, and maybe it does turn out Ben and them were the 'good guys' the whole time?

I guess they all start dying once they get off the island. Maybe that's why Ben warned Jack that if he made the call, everyone on the island would die.
does anyone else almost feel like they know too much now?? this episode, while mostly greatness, left me disappointed in the end:
1) they confirm that they get off the island with 3 damn seasons left
2) we know leaving the island causes tons of problems. knowing that, do you really care about them fighting so hard to leave anymore?
For me, time will tell if this episode was greatness, or the straw that kinda broke the proverbial camel's back.
am i the only one thinking this??![]()
Could be some desmond like flashes. It added more mystery to me when I felt like I had mostly everything figured out.
Hurley driving in with the bug and slamming that Other was cool! I felt really bad for Hurley after Sawyer and Charlie both called him "fat" without actually calling him fat.
That Charlie death was beyond sad. One of the best death scenes I've ever witnessed in anything. Beautifully tragic.
Andat everyone who "quit watching" because it "never answered questions".
No, I was thinking the same thing. Now no one will ever worry when Jack or Kate are in danger on the island. Also, we now know that at least some will be rescued, so it takes away the possibility that they will be stuck on the island forever. Oh, well. I am sure that the writers will confuse things even more next season.
I do believe that the coffin was Ben's. I was noticing how short it was...and it makes sense.
Jack's life goes to when they leave the island somehow. He realizes that he made a collosal mistake, should have listened to Locke and Ben, and is now destroying himself because of it.
He's the only one that would show up at Ben's funeral.
yeah you're right about the writers confusing us. there will surely be great twists and whatnot to come, but im not sure im going to be able to get past that. every time there's a life threatening situation, i can bank on jack and kate making it through.
it's also saddening to see jack, such a great character, just fall to pieces in the future. and to know that for the next 3 seasons...bleh.![]()
Great finale. Almost makes up for how lackluster most of this season was. Almost.
Now everyone gets to wait 9 months to see it again.
Who knows we may see Jack turn his life around. He could return to the island.
I don't think what we saw tonight at the end of the episode with Kate will be the last we see of Jack after they leave the Island. I can see him returning to the Island like he wants.
We haven't actually seen them leave the island yet is the thing. Everyone assumes these flashes of the future are set in stone, but much like Desmond's visions of Charlie dying several times, they can and probably will change. I doubt they'll just pop off the island to get on that boat after Desmond informs them what Charlie told him of it not actually being Penny's boat.
And then theres the questions of how Locke's dad got on the island in the first place, what was up with Walt, what Mikhail will end up doing since he's apparently alive.
Plenty of variables.
Here's a picture of the newspaper article about the funeral. The name appears to start with a J.... The last name appears to end with "antham".... but it's hard to tell. Perhaps it's Juliet? I don't know her last name... Or maybe it's someone we haven't met yet?
I am curious if we will now be in fast forward time or if we will be back in Island time next season. I have to believe it will be Island time.
Here is the picture:
