Hmm sounds like a plan to me, lets play dirty!
Not dirty, just physical. Basketball is a physical game in the paint. I wouldn't mind knocking Dirk on his ass in the playoffs when he drives inside this year. I can live with Dirk's jumpshot. It was his interior play that changed the series last year, and that was AJ's influence.

Am I wrong, but does Ely bring toughness to this team. Like Kersey did?

Hopefully by tomorrow night because we are going to get raped on the boards by Detroit.

Well, my question referred back to the idea of Butler as a sweetner for getting Maggette.

I don't think the backup point guard question is even remotely as critical as the swingman athleticism issue. And at some point you're going to want six fouls to throw at Yao or Shaq in the playoffs. So if they're not going to play Butler, I would be in favor of them using him to get Maggette and keep Oberto for the 1/8 games he's useful.
The backup PG issue isn't nearly as critical as getting Corey Maggette, but I think it's just as critical as getting that long 3/small ball 4. It's also more feasible to get a backup PG than it is to get a replacement for Finley at that long 3/small ball 4 spot. Outside of Maggette, who could come in and contribute immediately at that spot? Conversely, there are plenty of backup PG that could come in behind Parker (Atkins, Arroyo, Diener, etc.). I'm not saying you're totally wrong on priorities....just that they are both concerns and one is more "fixable" than the other.

I guess my Gerald Wallace as a Spur dream is over.
I hear ya. If the Spurs cannot pry Maggette from the Clips, I'd love to see them go after him.

Bobcats owner Bob Johnson is a notorious cheapskate. It's unlikely that he'll ante up to keep Wallace. Of course, that scenario likely wont play out until the summer.

    Keep the dream alive.

Are Butler and Elson at all tradeable right now, though? I don't know the new CBA very well... have they removed the base-year compensation issues that made it virtually impossible to trade a signed free agent in the first year of his contract?
Base-year deals mostly with extensions to pre-existing contracts. Butler and Elson signed new contracts for around $2.5M and $3M respectively.

I'd way rather trade Butler than Oberto. Butler has promise down the line. Oberto's vertical isn't going to improve anytime soon.

And I don't think Oberto is good enough to effect the championship hopes one way or the other.

Doubt it. The Spurs' first order of business was getting under the luxury threshold by any means possible. This trade completed that task.

I thought the trade was going to be Williams for Hermann, a 2nd rounder and cash. But the Spurs did better than that because Ely >>>> Hermann.

Did I miss who or what we actually traded for Ely?

If Ely is re-signed, you can officially kiss Scola goodbye. Ely and Scola are pretty damn close to the same player.
We´ll see about that when Scola comes down to the NBA next summer,I bet scola can average more tham 2ppg ad 3 rpg in the NBA,even in his rocckie year. And I haven´t seen Ely´s salary but I bet he gets more tham 3 M p/year .

    Williams & 2009 2nd rd pick...

A.K.A. - Nothing....unless that second round pick turns out to be Manu Ginobili v. 2012

I guess that the 09 second is Hornets second round pick they got in the Rasho trade. So Spurs have turned Rasho and his big contract into Bonner + Ely.

I'm in Southern California. Not only did the Spurs make a trade, (after all the we will stick with what we have talk), it was hailing here for ten minutes just now. I'm watching for the flying pigs. There's nothing I won't believe now.

i know, last year he averaged 9.8 ppg and 4.9 rpg.
I still think scola can do better tham that in his roockie year.

I presume you meant to transpose that?

I agree. I just can't imagine why the Clippers would ever want Oberto, while Butler might make them interested.

    Bring on trade #2.

I know ArgSpursFan is huge on Scola, but he needs to get over Scola getting 3 million per year. Unless ArgSpursFan is Scola's agent. Hmm...
