that ball was killed
found elsewhere on net
on the broadcast they said the furthest was a 471 foot Sammy Sosa HR. and that Bonds had 2 longer than Reynolds...Mark Grace seemed to think Reynolds got shortchanged and Deron Sutton said he hadn't seen one there any further and he broadcast the Braves for years
that ball was killed
Young had more fun watching Webb from center field. The right-hander got ahead in the count on 21 of 29 hitters, and went to three balls only twice
Wrong. Every outlet is saying this and it's wrong.
The record is at 59. Webb sits at 42.
With 2 more complete games, he would sit at 60 innings.
Well, as far as I remember, baseball works in thirds of an inning.
In reality, Webb needs 17-1/3 innings to break the record.
Here's an interesting question... if you're Bob Melvin, let's say Webb pitches seven scoreless in his next start, but only has around 80/90 pitches. Let's say he has dominated, has been hit a bit, maybe walked a batter or two, and just doesn't seem to have his great stuff. Would you take him out for preserving the record, or risk the record by sending him out a bit fatigued, a bit hittable in an attempt to set another recent record of four-straight CG shutouts?
If the Diamondbacks are winning, and Webb has thrown seven scoreless, I'd take him out and rest him up for the next game.
You don't want to wear him down for every record. Not if you're winning. Not if you're still in first place. They'll need him to be tip-top in the playoffs.
Apparently, the record deals with consecutive innings. Pulling Webb early or missing a start means his streak would end.
if you complete the inning it should not count againts you
no... it's innings while not giving up a run. not complete games.
he could pitch 6 innings of scoreless ball next game and it would still be on for his next start.
Woo-hoo! Owings is the man, and the beatdown is on!
9 straight series wins!
tomorrow however, will be difficult. Smoltz is pitching for a now very embarassed Atlanta team.
Kind of figured yesterday's loss was coming. Hate to see that the Padres also won, cutting the lead from 5 to 4 games.
Home for Milwaukee, Chicago and then a HUGE four-game series at San Diego. It could decide the division.
I dislike the brewers
The Dbacks need to pull their heads out of their asses tonight. They need to get Webb four or five runs so he can just pitch, and they need to right the ship before the San Diego series next week. That's a huge series and they need to be playing well entering it. Luckily San Diego is scuffling a bit as well, or this could be a one or two game lead as of now. They have to win tonight to keep the pressure on San Diego and they need to take the next series vs. the Cubs. It's a "gotsta do" sicheation...
atleast webb is pitching but webb is due to give up a run
I've been a D-Backs fan the past two days. Will they win one please before I hate them with a passion in the next couple days (when the Cubs come to town)?
i think the streak for webb continues past tonight
ing Webb gives it up in the first. DAMNIT BEAT THE BREWERS!!!!!
yeah brewers bats are hot... their pitching sucks though.
alright, thank you D Backs. Now do it again tommarow, then sweep the out of the small bears would ya.
Hated to see Webb's streak end in the first. Everyone I was watching with was like, "Walk fielder... set up the double-play!" ... shame Melvin botched that.
Yeah, I know Braun is tough, but Webb had him all night. Fielder has a history of hittin' Webb, so to pitch to him with a runner on third and just one out was begging for a sac-fly at the minimum or a base-hit, which is what happened.
Very glad for the win, but even in the win the offense played ty. They need to pull out of this funk they are in or it'll be a long homestand.
Back from trip to San Jose just in time for the game last night. Davis looked great, and really matched the Cubs pitching. I hope they can get it done tonight, then beat the crap out of the Padres and get some real distance between them before September.
The lead is back to 3 games. I believe it's a four-game series, which means the Dbacks need to, at worst, come away with a split. They need to strive for three wins. That would push the lead back to five!
Young is a beast, but at some point he's going to need to stop trying to hit homeruns and just hit.
I'd rather have Young develop into a .289/.300 batter with a .350+ OBP with around 100 runs scored, 50-to-60 RBI and 20ish homeruns than his current .230/.250 batter, with a sub .300 OBP with 30+ homeruns.
Another great win today. Valverde had to make it interesting, of course, but the Snakes got it done in the end. Good thing is the Cubs didn't face Webb, so he will pitch during the SD series.
wish I could go to see the diamondbacks but I have to work!
Padres fan checking in................
Living out here in Arizona I must I say I really, really, really hate the announcers out here on FSN. Mark Grace and that other bag drive me nuts. Looks to be the start of a great series.
