While this trade is beyond comprehension, I can't say whether it will make or break the Spurs' chances of a repeat. That's the only non-negative (won't say "positive") thing I can say....and that's the only time I'm going to say it.
Agree. It doesn't affect their repeat chance for next year. But it affects them long-term. They threw away two assets for a Roman-style enrichening of the owner instead of trying to keep building the team for the future.

This is how the Lakers, the last dynasty, started spoiling. Bad moves, bad players. This isn't the end yet, but this is how it happens.

They magically transformed a late 2002 second round pick for a late 2009 second round pick. If that's not victory, I don't know what is.
And they gave $2.5 million to Jackie Butler to ride the pine all last season and now Holt wants to save money. me

The Spurs couldn't even get the Rockets to take Beno and get back Lucas back? I mean, there's absolutely no silver lining to this trade at all. The Spurs didn't dump a long-term contract. They didn't even freakin' get under the luxury tax threshold. The difference in Butler's contract and Mahinmi's contract is something around $1.5M.

In actuality, at most this put $6M in Holt's pocket. Trading away Beno and a couple picks for cash would have put $5.4M.

So for $600K, the Spurs gave a divisional rival two scoring options on the post.

    Holy crap.

Tomorrow they'll make that trade with Beno.

    You know it's coming.

Jackie Butler is 3 years away from being Eddy Curry like .

the man needs to just play. He would shine in Atlanta or a team needing a center.

Too much politics in the NBA. egos and from offices to the court.

all of this sounds horrible and that the fo knows diddly ... but honestly, how many practices have any of us been to? how many team meetings and all the rest of it? i doubt seriously that this lindsey guy could waltz in and in less than a month convince the spurs to do something this apparently goofy just on his say so. the best thing i'd heard about butler from anyone on this board was he was big and still had lots of potential ... but he didn't seem enormously impressive in this year's summer league, even after having spent stints with larry brown and the knicks and now pop and the spurs. bust? no clue. but some kind of low post savior? doubting it. and scola just looked to be more and more of a pipe dream as things went along. for whatever reason, it wasn't happening, and how big of a deal could it have been withh so many folks calling for his rights to be included in a trade for nocioni? the deal looks lopsided, certainly, but i'm willing to give 'em the benefit of the doubt with four trophies on the mantle.

In a telephone interview Thursday night from Greece, Spinoulas tells FOX 26 Sports his position hasn’t changed even though he’s been traded to the Spurs.

“I was sleeping. It’s late here in Greece. I don’t even realize what’s happened. I have so many things to think about. This is so strange. It’s different for me. It doesn’t change my mind. I want to stay in Greece,” Spinoulas said.

When pressed about getting the opportunity to play for the world champions, Spinoulas didn’t waver. “Nothing changes my mind. I still want to stay in Greece.”

This trade sucks, no doubt about it. But to the ROCKETS of all teams. THE FKING ROCKETS!!!

Here are some of the quotes from clutchcity.net...http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread...&page=11&pp=20

Mogrod..."This guy may be the perfect 4 in Adelman's half-court offense. He can play the post, high post, is a real good passer and has good hands for a big man. Plus, he gets up and down the floor real well and is an attacker when he gets at or towards the rim. He may not be the greates one-on-one defender, but he is an aggitator very much in the mold of Varejo. He's not going to give an inch to anyone.

Wow, and to trade virtually nothing for him. Just wow."

Solid..."Yeah, I am just all broken up. You know what, this might be a turning point for Rocket's management and the team. This is no 40mill+ contract for a "Cato." If this guy comes to play this year, this is a coup. A starting PG and a reserve Center for VSpan! Now we are talking some serious horse trading.

What if Brooks actually pans out? What if he could start and James could play SG? Then TMac could move to SF. I like the possibilities. Hayes is a perfect back up. What if Bonzi gets in shape? What if........ It's all pretty exciting if it works out."

Tigereye...."One more thing.....Morey is looking samrter by the minute in this deal....check this snippet I found in the chronicle article...

    Quote:
``The Spurs gave us permission to speak with him about three days ago and we had a long conversation. It was very positive on both ends.''

Essentially, before Morey made this deal, he made sure he could sign Scola first by speaking with him to gauge his interests between the NBA and Tau Ceramica. Once he got his assurances he could sign Scola, he made the deal and straight swindled San Antoino in the process.

Bookmark it....moneyball knows what he is doing...Scola will be a Rocket next year. Think of this...

    26 yearl-old Yao, next to 27 year-old Scola.

We're set in the front court for years to come baby!"

    THIS FKING SUCKS.

and how many paychecks do you sign? everyone raves about how the spurs are able to conduct business and not have to go over the cap and the rest of it, well, that crap doesn't happen for the heck of it. wow, you mean a business man wants to make money from any investment? shocker. you act so devastated because holt's not doing enough for the spurs franchise. he bought the thing and pays the salaries. he does more than anyone on this board. and how big an impact it has on the basketball remains unknown. i've heard plenty of people say scola isn't all that and butler has yet to do much in san antonio or new york.

I manage a little over 10 million in contracts for my company. It's publically traded, and if I up a contract it impacts our stock price, could cost someone under me their job, and probably mine as well. So spare me the ing business lecture.

Holt is making millions every year off the Spurs, has been ever since they moved into the AT&T Center, and the future of this franchise just got leveraged so Holt could afford to buy Pop a few more bottles of wine for Christmas.

    Give me a break.

Sam Presti "will always be a Spurs fan." Word is he's now offering Damien Wilkins for Manu Ginobili and the rights to Buford's left ball. Holt plans on accepting.
