Tesla recalls nearly 3 million cars in China over door escape risk

According to a filing with China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), the recall covers 973,156 domestically built Model 3s, 1,956,713 domestically built Model Ys, 35,590 imported Model 3s, 8,328 imported Model Xs, and 2,123 imported Model Ss.

The regulator’s concern isn’t the flush exterior handles that Tesla popularized. It’s the interior emergency mechanical release — the manual backup that lets occupants open a door when the car loses power.

SAMR says the release is difficult to identify and operate because it closely matches the color of the surrounding interior trim. In a severe crash that disables the electrical system, the regulator warns, occupants could struggle to get out.

Tesla filed the recall plan under China’s Regulations on the Recall of Defective Automobile Products. The remedy is not a hardware change to the door mechanism. Instead, Tesla will add warning labels and push an over-the-air software update that changes how the windows lower to aid escape. The recall takes effect September 25, 2026.

The studio releasing Alex Gibney’s new Elon Musk do entary Musk is finding itself unable to buy an ad on the biggest social platforms.


YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram and Facebook owner Meta are all declining to run the trailer for Musk, along with X itself, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.


That last one is perhaps understandable, given its owner. But the rejection by the other platforms has taken distributor Bleecker Street by surprise, and it is internally scrambling to understand why the ad has been rejected, according to a person familiar with the company’s processes who is not authorized to talk about them publicly.


The unwillingness of platforms to accept even paid advertising is sure to raise concerns about free speech and the dwindling number of companies that control many of the platforms in this country — and ironically provide a proof-text for the very point the film is coming to make. Gibney’s doc is a four-hour look at a le character who attempts to control the conversation in various ways, including with alleged suppressions on X, which he bought in 2022.

YouTube, TikTok and Meta have all supplied a reason related to “political content” to Bleecker Street reps. The latter two companies’ platforms, by policy, do not allow campaign or other political ads, in Meta’s case largely owing to fallout from the Cambridge Analytica Facebook scandal during the 2016 election. But the Musk trailer, which dropped Thursday, does not appear to fall in the category of the campaign advertising those bylaws were enacted to prevent. It simply contains a shot of a political rally in 2024 and a reference at the end to the 2024 election — the kind of flicks that occur in numerous do entaries and are hardly meant to stump for a particular candidate in an upcoming race.


The reason for YouTube’s rejection is even less clear, as the platform does allow campaign ads, albeit with “paid for” disclosures from vetted candidates."

BYD sold more EVs last month than the US did all quarter, topping 300,000

The world’s leading EV maker is showing no signs of slowing down. BYD sold 490,168 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in October, up 11% from the prior year and the company’s highest monthly total in 2026.

BYD’s battery electric vehicles drove the growth, with a record 305,743 units sold, up 37% year over year and marking the first time its EV sales have crossed the 300,000 mark.

To put that into perspective, just over 262,500 EVs were sold in the US in the entire third quarter combined, according to Kelley Blue Book estimates.

October marked BYD’s sixth straight month of higher sales growth and its third straight month of higher EV sales. Through October, BYD sold 1,953,700 electric vehicles, up 6% from the same period last year.
