I hope so, but all signs point to sticking with the status-quo. They'll stay loyal to TP, Manu, Gasol, and look like they're stuck with Aldridge. They'll win 60 games and lose to the Warriors, and I think they're okay with that.
What signs point to that tho? free agency hasn't even started

People ing about paying players past their primes give it up. It's a fact of life with all these half decent players. They line up their contracts so the last ones go to 35 - 36 and those players are mostly the only ones available.

Gasol wouldn't opt out if he wasn't getting paid, Manu is coming back because he always does, TP isn't going anywhere, and no one wants Aldridge.

i already said it awhile back... sign livingston instead of hill.

2 years, $16 million instead of 4 years, $70 million.
I am not sure Livingston would sign a 2-year deal.

They have no loyalty to Pau though. The Spurs wanted him years back and he chose money over championships. Sure, like most veterans on their last legs, they come crawling back to the Spurs when they're washed up and no good because the Spurs have a tendency to pay old players to not go away. Nothing like the Spurs to hand out more of that undeserved/unjustified free money.

I appreciate that. I don't think the Re comparison makes any more sense than the Carroll one. Green has had two opportunities to leave for the highest bidder after having great contract years and didn't. I don't see why he'd decide to go for it this time. It's possible a random team would offer that if he has a third great contract year. But if he requires a deal the Spurs can't/won't match, he'll leave, and that will be fine.

"The Beautiful Game" as you seem to be describing it was a state the offense reached every once in a while. It was not their regular offense those seasons. Their regular offense looked a lot like it does now, but it was quicker and more decisive. Getting back to that state is hardly asking for the moon. They need someone who can run the Zipper Series again (meaning a mid-range PG with wheels) and a big who can hit shots in the post (Leonard could actually do this if the team gets a stretch-big).

Hill is hardly an ideal fit for this type of offense. He fits sort of with Leonard if the team commits to the iso-heavy bogged down execution they've suffered from the last two-and-a-half seasons. If they want to actually start leveraging Kawhi's talent to get good looks, they'll go elsewhere.

It's not Hill at a bit more and a pick for Green. It's Hill locked into a long-term contract over a Green going into a contract year then expiring. The first may or may not be good (like the OKC first Orlando owns is terrible). Even if Green were traded, I'm not keen to offer the money to Hill.
Spurs had legit contender then and Green seemed happier. Also, this will be his last chance to cash in.

It is with Leonard and Murray.

Hill can assist with ball handling/creating, but play off ball too. Leonard is at his best with Mills, a similar but more limited player offensively and a far worse defender.

Yeah, neither is a possibility, but without star back court player in '18 class (minus Thomas, who likely re-signs and I can't see him or Spurs having interest) to pursue and limited trade assets, it's unlikely.

I really think they will. They'll "do right" by Gasol.

Parker isn't going anywhere, but I hope his fans aren't expecting him to actually play. He'll probably be so much slower and lamer that he'll never play real minutes again.

Won't stop the Spurs from keeping his bloated mess on the books unfortunately.

Ezeli is waived. I could see him as a fourth big, TBH.

Spurs had legit contender then and Green seemed happier. Also, this will be his last chance to cash in.
And who knows what they'll have in 2018? Much better chance they can get something together without Hill taking up a huge chunk.

It is with Leonard and Murray.
I don't see any justification for this view. The Spurs made it work with a bunch of different players, including Parker and Tim. I don't know how Murray will develop, but I don't see any path he'll take where he'll be starting caliber but not able to play in a motion offense.

Hill can assist with ball handling/creating, but play off ball too. Leonard is at his best with Mills, a similar but more limited player offensively and a far worse defender.
Leonard is at his "best" in the context of he isos the best. Just like Parker PnRs were a temporary state for Tony before Pop installed the Zipper Series, Kawhi is going to have an offense built around him. That's going to involve give-and-take as well as a good bit of adaptation. The Spurs need to increase their talent level, so settling for certain PGs because they can shoot decently from three is not going to move the needle.

Yeah, neither is a possibility, but without star back court player in '18 class (minus Thomas, who likely re-signs and I can't see him or Spurs having interest) to pursue and limited trade assets, it's unlikely.
I'm not sure what this refers to. The Spurs don't need to find a superstar to get better than Hill.

Can't shoot and can't make free throws. Not sure what the Spurs plan to do with him but it does explain Buford's sudden departure to LA.

This is where I'm at right now with what I'd like to see

    Murray/White/Parker
    Leonard/Green/Forbes
    Iguodala/Simmons/Blossomgame
    Millsap/Anderson/Bertans
    Gasol/Milutinov/????

You keep Green. Use cap to sign Andre. 15-18 mill. S&T Aldridge for Millsap, Aldridge going to another team and Atlanta getting a pick from us or other team. Pau Gasol on Mid Level deal. Still have the room exception or bi annual for Hanga or a big and then what's left get another big.

Love the potential of this lineup though. So many guards to throw on others for defense. Small ball lineup would be great and you would have so many options. I get the Iggy age arguments but let's face he's probably gonna want to win and get more money and you want him off GS. Here he starts and can legitimately have a chance at GS to give them a good series. I'm looking at 3 year deals for both.

You could close with Simmons/Green/Leonard/Iggy/Millsap. That lineup would be insane on D and not too shabby on offense.

I've talked myself out of the Hill scenarios cause if you believe Murray is the guard of the future then he needs his space. You have higher upside in Murray and you don't have conflicting rotations.
