Hate to break it to you but countries that don't trust each other do make agreements with each other.
They are of course the hardest ones to make but they are made.
Because agreements can be found based on mutual interests no matter how much anyone might want to believe otherwise.
They spent a huge amount of military resources and gained very little ground. I think that just before the counter-offensive Putin was more concerned about UKR's potential to take back territory and was more ready to negotiate. But Now Ukraine hasn't gained much, yet is more dependent than ever on even more support, not just to advance, but to hold back Russia's counter-attacks. And Putin probably sees cracks in Ukraine's political support... even if they may not fully exist yet but they will eventually.
...any of 'em/"political support" who could get their ass scratchers on that U.S. cash comin' over has already done so and taken off and is on a beach like "Hans Gruber -Die Hard- earning 20%.

In a statement released on X, formerly known as Twitter, Mr Arestovych said that Mr Zelensky had made “corrupt and inadequate decisions”, and described the counter-offensive as a wasted opportunity.

Ukrainian commanders have said that Russia’s trench systems and minefields have slowed them down.
Mr Arestovych said that rather than get sucked into battles around Bakhmut in the eastern Donetsk region, the Ukrainian army should have concentrated on breaking through the southern frontlines and preparing its own defences.
