Yeah, you guys should definitely get a UPS if you don't have one.
And even though MS Word isn't the end-all/be-all, at least it will do auto-backups for you.
Yeah MS Word sucks for writing html, etc. So I just write in notepad.
Our power went out twice, it doesn't look like I lost that much but I don't know about LJ - he usually has like 30 different things open.
When I thought I was going to be a computer geek, back in the day, notepad was my hero. Closing it by accident and crashes were the devil. I wish ther was a viable second option that wasn't so heavy that I could offer, but I don't know any.
