After being traded, he definitely tests the market. The question is whether NO can offer a better place for him than anyone else at that time. In the mean time, your record will be better, which means worse draft position with whatever you're left with(2ND?) And you won't be competing for a championship. You just put your entire franchise at risk on a gamble that you can convince him to stay, and you have one full season to do it.
Their cap is going to be hard to play with. Really depends on what supporting cast they can offer while being of interest to possibly one more big name.

Unless you're in contention, which they're not, I can't see this as a steal at all. High risk high reward. If it works out, it'll be gold, but there are a ton of IFs involved.
A year for Boogie to polish his image in a new environment and then cash in on next contract.

It's a risk, but it's pretty minimal IMO. Buddy, while some people like him, doesn't seem to have near the ceiling that people thought. The pick is a decent deal, but if they make the playoffs statistically it's not a crazy pick to give up.

It's a gamble for sure, but even if he walks, it was a worthwhile swing imo.
Might as well swing for the fences, I agree, if you're trying something desperate. The reward could be huge. Time will tell. They'll definitely be a fun team to watch though, which helps the NBA too. Warriors pelicans would put some excitement into the first round.

Huge-ass steal. Of course he tests the market unless they amend the CBA to let traded teams offer the Durant-max, which they should because it's stupid that they don't. There isn't a gamble. Hield may or may not be a bust. But the chances that his going to be a great player are really low. They don't need to worry about their picks this year, and after that, they have all their own picks again.

They have huge upside if he stays and little downside if he leaves. For a team that can't seem to do anything right with picks or cap space most of the time, this was a huge, huge steal.

I can see that, and I don't like Cousins one bit. , they could probably get even more back this summer if they wanted to trade him.

Maybe this opens the door for this:

http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=zbptt25 SA sends protected 2nd round pick.

    Everyone getting steals, meanwhile......

Easiest job in the world, work in the summer, scratch your balls throughout the season and then check the waiver list during buyouts. This is probably passed out in Poop's wine collection as we speak.

I'd rather just cut Anthony. They don't need to send Forbes out to make the numbers work. But again, I'm not bringing in a PG unless Mills is part of a package for something else.

A gamble is when you don't know the outcome and are betting in one way or the other, so this would be exactly that. A gamble.

They're losing what could be 3 years of first round picks including a lottery pick, if he leaves.

They are losing a bunch, especially at a point in time where they are not close to contention, and need cheap pieces to play big to help their stars. If he leaves, and you wasted 2-3 years of davis prime plus shipped off your future, that is huge downside.

Mills is a shooter/SG, not a PG though IMO. Different roles.

True, forgot they didn't have to send out money for that. Ya, cutting Anthony way better.

I agree in the sense that their roles are different. I don't agree in sense that Lawson and Mills can be a legit backcourt.

They are giving up this first and a second. Where the are you getting three years from?

At worst, they are giving up Hield, a late-lotto pick and a pick in the high-30s. For a year-and-a-half of a star with a first crack at paying him more than any other team can, that's a great deal.

They certainly haven't wasted a second of Davis' prime with this deal. It's pretty clear that this is the most hope NOP has had since CP3 was there.

I wonder if this was a domino that everyone was waiting for and now things pick up? Been pretty quite trade activity this year.

Just unreal that the Spurs wouldn't try to beat that. At least the Pelicans shouldn't be able to climb to the 7th seed, so this is much scarier for the Dubs this season.

He is talented as , but he was also THE constant in the above mediocrity..League insiders know exactly the extent of his toxicity and how it affected the ultimate goal of winning; hence the low-balls ..

It's slow every year until the 11th hour. But, I do think this may have been a big domino.
