you can't treat people like this

Whistleblower photographs released on Monday show that an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in South Florida is severely overcrowded, with detainees sleeping on the floor of the building's garage and forced to use portable toilets overflowing with human waste.

Democrats on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform published the photographs and allegations by an anonymous ICE employee, who alleges that people being detained at an ICE field office in Miramar, Florida, are being stuffed in overcrowded holding cells, given inadequate access to medical care and hygiene, insufficient food, and limited to no legal access.

The photographs also show many detainees being confined in the building's sally port, an unventilated garage entrance, where they allegedly are forced to sleep shackled for eight to 10 hours a day. According to the disclosures, although the Miramar ICE facility only has a rated capacity to hold 56 detainees at a time, it's routinely detaining hundreds of people—up to 342 at one point in August.

Reason reported last month that the Miramar ICE facility, which is typically an administrative office where immigrants check in with federal authorities, had instead become a makeshift detention center as immigration arrests surged over the summer, with people languishing for days in what were supposed to be temporary holding cells.

A South Florida woman told Reason that her sister was arrested by immigration officers and detained at the Miramar field office for five days—jammed into a bare concrete holding cell with roughly 50 other people, where she suffered an anxiety attack.

According to the new whistleblower allegations, one woman who was seven months pregnant was detained for three weeks at Miramar until she was finally released on an order of supervision.

    waste, fraud and abuse

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other agencies have wasted tens of millions of dollars pursuing ill-conceived plans to rapidly increase detention capacity, and the total will likely rise due to ongoing mismanagement, congressional investigators warned Thursday.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office do ented costly problems in several initiatives ICE has pursued since President Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025 and ordered the mass arrest and deportation of people who are in the country illegally.

Among the misspending was nearly $3 million to erect tents at Guantanamo Bay that were never used, $20 million to maintain purchased warehouses that are now being sold without having housed a single detainee, and excessive rates paid to hold detainees at a deficient and now-shuttered Florida lockup.

“By detaining far more persons in the hold rooms than ever was intended and for far longer than ever was intended, ICE objectively deprived detainees of sleep, sanitary living conditions, basic personal hygiene needs, sufficient food and water, and adequate medical care. ICE prevented detainees from accessing counsel, who might have stood in the way of what it was doing,” Kaplan wrote, adding, “Some of these deprivations impacted detainees immediately; others only after longer periods. ICE knew, or should have known, that how it was treating detainees was wrong, yet it continued to do it anyway. It did so to inflict punishment on detainees and induce them to self-deport.”

secret courts, pop-up locations, not open to the public

appointment locations changed without notice isn't cricket either

The Trump administration is holding secret, pop-up immigration court hearings in federal buildings that the public can’t access, and lawyers are having trouble finding detained migrants through an online system, lawyers and an Arizona lawmaker said Tuesday.

U.S. Rep. Greg Stanton, D-Arizona, says he was initially denied entry into a FEMA building last week in Washington, D.C., where “pop-up” immigration courts are now being held. He says a day later, once he finally was admitted, the court was empty and he said not one person on the docket showed up for their hearing.

During a virtual call with reporters on Tuesday, Stanton said the use of the FEMA facility — during hurricane season — is not appropriate for immigration court proceedings. He said that all immigration court proceedings should be open to the public, and easy to locate.

“Access to a court of law, and it shouldn’t have to be a member of Congress – any American citizen should have access to the American judicial system. But I was told that the impromptu court that was set up inside the FEMA building was not allowing people to enter. That’s wrong. That’s illegal,” Stanton said.

"he was no angel" doesn't justify killing a man, then lying about it and covering it up

Geraldo Lunas Campos, a 55-year-old Cuban from Rochester, New York, who had lived in the United States since 1996, died at about 10.16pm on 3 January 2026 while contract guards restrained him at Camp East Montana, the tent detention site at Fort Bliss in El Paso that is the largest in the Immigration and Customs Enforcement system. The El Paso County medical examiner ruled his death a homicide and gave the cause as asphyxia due to neck and torso compression.
The Government Accountability Office later found that the camp's contractor never gave ICE the use-of-force and death reports its contract required, and that "evidence associated with the incident was missing or destroyed"

creating a "terrorist watchlist" of people exercising their 1st Amendment rights

US agents doing this should be tried and jailed

"The government is treating people who exercise their First Amendment rights and seek to hold it accountable as criminal suspects, and that's what we're asking the court to stop,” says JoAnna Suriani, an attorney at Protect Democracy who is representing ICE observers in the case.

The filing focuses on agents’ conduct during “Operation Catch of the Day,” an immigration enforcement surge in Maine this past January. It is part of a proposed class action brought in federal court in Maine by four observers: Elinor Hilton, Colleen an, Polyxenia Pantos, and Carlyn Williams. It was filed under seal in September, and a redacted version was made public Friday.

In particular, it describes how one DHS agent, referred to as “Agent J.C.” in the filing, used the Investigative Case Management (ICM) database, which the government describes as the case management system the ICE component Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) uses to do ent its investigations, to flag observers.

According to the filings, J.C. created ICM records on at least six observers; the government puts the number of people at eight. He labeled two people he filmed at a Home Depot parking lot with “Threat to Law Enforcement, Professional Protestor,” according to the filing, and sent photos of them and others to a US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer so he could run a facial recognition search on them using an app called Mobile Query.

On January 20, Pantos briefly watched and photographed an arrest in Portland, Maine, standing a few car lengths away beside their spouse's car. Hours later, per the filing, J.C. ran the car's plate and pulled a report on the owner—Williams—from Accurint, a LexisNexis database for law enforcement, which listed her address, phone numbers, and cohabitants. J.C. then allegedly circulated her photo to his team, asking, “Was this the protestor.” Another agent, per the filing, replied that it didn’t match the woman he had dealt with at the scene; J.C. then told colleagues he was "adding them in ICM now."

According to the legal filing, that afternoon, J.C. called Williams on her cell phone, identifying himself only as "the Department of Homeland Security." According to Williams, he told her she "should encourage" her spouse, Pantos, "not to do anything like that in the future because people who are doing things like that might get added to a domestic terrorism watchlist." J.C. testified in a deposition that he warned Williams she would be arrested if she “continue[d] to do this.” Government attorneys asserted in a court filing that he denied referencing a “domestic terrorism watchlist.”

According to do ents produced by the government, Williams’ ICM record says that she was the registered owner of a vehicle used to “interrupt ICE arrests” and that her driver’s license photo matched a video of "aggressive woman [who] interject[ed] herself into an arrest." According to a 2016 DHS privacy assessment, ICM automatically shares the subject records agents create with CBP’s TECS system, where they act as "lookout records" for screening travelers at the border.

ICM is the system used by HSI agents to create and track case files. ICE awarded Palantir the contract to build ICM in 2014, and the system is built on the company’s Gotham software, which ICE says was customized specifically for operational needs. In 2022, ICE awarded Palantir a new five-year ICM support contract initially valued at up to about $96 million. In 2025, the agency added nearly $30 million to that contract to develop a new platform called “ImmigrationOS.”

Todd Lyons, the former acting director of ICE, wrote in an April letter to Rep. Maxwell Frost, the Florida Democrat, that ICE “does not maintain any kind of database of U.S. citizens protesting ICE activities.” He also said DHS isn’t keeping a “separate, standalone database” of people it hasn’t arrested or detained.

ICE’s new tactic, witnessed repeatedly at the federal building in MN: when a detained immigrant makes a successful habeas pe ion, release the immigrant for a few steps outside the building… then tackle and re-arrest them, and claim the habeas pe ion has been honored and nullified

over 500 Americans detained, about a dozen deported

We have tallied and cataloged every case we can find of an immigration agent holding a citizen during the current administration.

More than 500 cases. That includes:

    • More than a hundred Americans held after agents questioned their citizenship. Nearly all were people of color.

    • At least 70 American children and teens detained, some of whom were handcuffed.

    • Of the more than 300 Americans we tracked as detained for allegedly assaulting or obstructing agents, we found fewer than half were actually charged in federal court, and many of those cases were dropped or dismissed.

    • At least 63 Americans detained while recording.

    • 36 Americans held for at least a day without being able to contact a lawyer or their family.

    • Roughly a dozen citizens deported, mostly children.

    dhs lies all day long

During the enforcement surge in Chicago last fall, known as Operation Midway Blitz, there were “no administrative arrests of U.S. citizens,” according to the Department of Homeland Security. “ICE has significant protections in place to ensure U.S. citizens are not arrested, detained, or mistakenly removed.” But we found that federal agents detained more than 120 citizens in Illinois during the height of the surge.

We shared details and footage of many of the incidents with former immigration officials. They reacted with anger and disbelief.

“This is just terrible,” said Eric Balliet, who spent more than two decades at Homeland Security Investigations and Border Patrol, both agencies under DHS, including in President Donald Trump’s first administration.

“I've never seen so many U.S. citizen encounters in all my years,” said Darius Reeves, who oversaw the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency’s Baltimore office before retiring last year. “It’s an embarrassment.”

    “ICE i
