TOKYO -- Russia, once a leader in the space business, has become a mere shadow of its former self.
The total number of the country's satellite launch orders from Europe and elsewhere fell by 90% following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, leaving the U.S. as the sole superpower in space. Smaller players, including India and China, are now jockeying to expand their presence at Russia's expense.
European countries used to rely on Russia's Soyuz spacecraft for satellite launches but began to shun the service after the invasion of Ukraine. According to data compiled by a U.S. astrophysicist, Russia launched 35 satellites for Britain and other countries in 2021, but the number dropped to two in 2022, recovering to three the following year.
Sweden last year constructed Europe's first satellite launch complex in the Arctic city of Esrange, located some 1,000 kilometers north of Stockholm. The first rocket firing is scheduled for 2025. "Having flexible means of space transportation to orbit has become a priority in terms of national security and defense," said Philip Pahlsson, vice president for strategy and innovation of the state-owned Swedish Space Corporation.
Russia's fall as a space superpower has manifested in other areas. Russian cargo spacecraft and crew capsule for the International Space Station have developed coolant leaks since 2022. In 2023, the country's first moon exploration mission in half a century ended in failure after its unmanned lunar lander crashed into the moon.
Russia also faces long-term funding problems. The revenue of Roscosmos plunged to 10.5 billion rubles ($113.7 million) in 2021 from 32.3 billion rubles in 2018. The space agency seems to have fallen deeper into a financial morass as demand for its satellite launch services, a key source of foreign currencies, has evaporated following the Ukraine invasion.
