Pharnacy instructor nabbed by ICE returning from teacher of the year awards

    "worst of the worst"

Federal officials detained an instructor from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy last week.

A University of Maryland, Baltimore representative told WBAL-TV 11 News that Dr. Berhanu Kibret was detained on July 21 by federal officials at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

Kibret was returning from a meeting of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, where he received a "Teacher of the Year" award.

In a statement to WBAL-TV 11 News Investigates, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said Kibret is in ICE custody pending the outcome of immigration proceedings.

when the government loses in court 10,000 times, it's breaking the law and violating people's rights

    Ten thousand losses.

That’s the Trump administration’s track record in court as federal judges grapple with the way ICE agents have swept through major U.S. cities and detained thousands of people in support of President Donald Trump’s aggressive deportation agenda.

More than 10,000 times, judges have said those detentions, typically carried out with no opportunity for detainees to plead their case, were illegal. That’s roughly 90 percent of all cases — a staggering rejection of a core piece of Trump’s immigration agenda.

Trump’s unprecedented detention policy, which is almost certainly headed to the Supreme Court, infuriated lower courts in ways no other modern issue has. It ruptured the relationship between the Justice Department and the judiciary; pitted the administration against itself; and upended innumerable lives — not just of the people swept up by immigration agents, but of their spouses and children, many of whom are U.S. citizens.

POLITICO is tracking the tens of thousands of detention cases that have flooded the system since ICE adopted its detention policy last July. Today we are releasing a full database of those rulings, giving the public an opportunity to see under the hood of our reporting — which has do ented the courts’ lopsided results, ICE’s tactics for defying judges’ orders and the rising tensions between the judiciary and the Trump administration.

The trend is clear from every angle. The administration has lost nearly 10,400 of the cases that have been decided, and prevailed in about 1,200. While some judges have heard more cases than others, the overwhelming majority of judges — more than 425 — have reached the same conclusion. Even a majority of Trump-appointed judges have sided against the administration.

declining prosecution of criminals to pick on more or less harmless immigrants -- good people

    mass deportation harms public safety

In total, the DOJ quietly closed more than 23,000 criminal cases in the first six months of President Donald Trump’s administration, abandoning hundreds of investigations into terrorism, white-collar crime, drugs and other offenses as it shifted resources to pursue immigration cases, according to an analysis by ProPublica.

The bulk of these cases, which were closed without prosecution and known as declinations, had been referred to the DOJ by law enforcement agencies under prior administrations that believed a federal crime may have been committed. The DOJ routinely declines to prosecute cases for any number of reasons, including insufficient evidence or because a case is not a priority for enforcement.

But the number of declinations under Bondi marks a striking departure not only from the Biden administration but also the first Trump term, according to the ProPublica analysis, which examined two decades of DOJ data, including the first six months of Trump’s second term. ProPublica determined the increase is not the result of inheriting a larger caseload or more referrals from law enforcement.

In February 2025 alone, which included the first weeks of Bondi’s tenure, nearly 11,000 cases were declined, the most in a month since at least 2004. The previous high was just over 6,500 cases in September 2019, during Trump’s first administration.

ICE/BPS baddies target women and children, and the problem is getting worse for a DHS that was already significantly more law-breaking than any other US agency before the current ethnic cleansing rampage

The report’s analysis of 59 do ented criminal cases involving DHS employees reveals a disturbing pattern of sexual violence, predation against children, abuse of authority, and a problem that is accelerating rather than improving. Among the findings:

    • Of the 59 individuals, 50 (84.7%) have been charged with or convicted of sex offenses, and 37 (62.7%) committed crimes specifically targeting children. Taken together, 35 individuals (59.3%) committed sex offenses against children — the single largest offense category on the list.

    • The problem is getting worse. Cases do ented in 2025 and 2026 alone account for 42.4% of the list — 25 out of 59 cases. Compare that to 2020, the previous peak year, which had just 6.

    • Customs and Border Protection accounts for nearly three-quarters of all cases — 42 out of 59 (71.2%). Both agencies show high rates of sex offenses (CBP: 86%, ICE: 81%), but ICE cases are more likely to involve underage victims — 69% of ICE cases involve children, compared to 62% for CBP.

    • A significant number of criminal agents directed their violence at family members, including partners and minor relatives. Ronald Anthony Burgos Aviles, a CBP agent in Texas, murdered his partner and her one-year-old son. Samuel Saxon, an ICE supervisor in Cincinnati, has a long history of abuse against his domestic partner, including strangulation and broken bones.

the opinion that mandatory detention is required for non-criminal aliens is decidedly the minority judicial opinion

if district courts are included, t
he Trump administration is on the wrong end of an 85%-15% split

The First Circuit (Montecalvo, Lynch) joins most of the others in finding mandatory detention is not required of non-criminal aliens.
