I still haven't bought any books but I'm banking on the fact that teachers mostly use the first couple of days to give out syllabus' (syllabi?) and to get a feel for the class.

Actually, that's not the smart thing to do. Then you'll be stuck with buying all new books. Buy the books ahead of time, used, and if the professor says you don't need the books then take them back for a full refund, within the appropriate time.

I was being a smart ass, what you said is exactly what I did. And asking if you know anyone who has taken the class still has the books would lend them to you for a semester is never a bad idea. I did get ed with one book this semester. I had one Spanish book from another class and thought the professor was going to use the same one, so didn't look online for a used version of another one the same author wrote and got to the store yesterday and saw the other one sitting there and was out $65. damn them. damn them all.

That's good. I'm hoping the one I thought we were going to use will come in handy, some of the passages show up again and I have notes from the past class in the other book. I do the same thing with other books too. It's way past the $450 mark though.
