    From SI's truth and rumors

It's becoming more obvious the player Tampa Bay would consider moving up for is Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson. Like many teams, the Bucs were blown away by Johnson's pro day workout in Atlanta. Jon Gruden couldn't mask his excitement about the possibility of fitting Johnson into a Bucs uniform.
    -- St. Petersburg Times

Bears GM Jerry Angelo is believed to be preparing a counteroffer to the Redskins' proposal of a swap of first-round draft picks that would move the Bears from No. 31 to No. 6. The Bears are thought to want a better package in exchange for Lance Briggs that might include a combination of players or future draft picks. The Bears also might shop the offer to other teams.
    -- Chicago Sun-Times

Joe Gibbs did not identify the other teams with which the Redskins discussed possible trades. The Lions, who have the second overall pick, are thought to be eager to trade down in the draft order.
    -- Washington Times

Sources close to David Carr and Joey Harrington said the quarterbacks are expected to visit with the Panthers, who have been searching for a backup to Jake Delhomme. The Seahawks are believed to be the other team most interested in Carr.
    -- Charlotte Observer

The 2007 Panthers might look more like the Falcons and Broncos of recent years. Coach John Fox revealed Wednesday that the Panthers will begin using zone-blocking schemes in their offense, a dramatic change for a system that's been built around a power-running style.
    -- Charlotte Observer

Jimmy Williams will enter the Falcons' first minicamp in April as the starting right cornerback. That strengthens the possibility that Atlanta could choose a safety ? LSU's LaRon Landry is the most highly regarded ? with the No. 8 overall selection in the draft.
    -- Atlanta Journal-Cons ution

Tom Coughlin barely hung onto his job after the Giants collapsed in the second half of last season. He tried to make it seem he was oblivious when there was so much speculation he was about to be fired. Clearly, it had an impact, because yesterday he compared the barrage of criticism to what Adolf Hitler received.
    -- New York Daily News

The Broncos likely will part ways with linebacker Al Wilson, either trading or releasing him soon. And the trade for defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson from Miami is expected to be voided Friday, barring a surprise arrival by Wilkinson to take a physical.
    -- Denver Post

The feeling among those close to Jake Plummer at the NFL owners meetings is that the quarterback will change his mind about retirement and play next season.
    -- St. Petersburg Times

It looks like the Dolphins might still be willing to do some shopping in the waning days of free agency. Miami has expressed some interest in Broncos free agent guard Cooper Carlisle, his agent said.
    -- Miami Herald

Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter allegedly instigated a fight against Bengals offensive tackle Levi Jones that led to a citation of arrest for misdemeanor battery.
    -- South Florida Sun-Sentinel

The Patriots are expected to host a handful of draft prospects in the coming weeks, a group highlighted by Mississippi linebacker Patrick Willis. The Patriots also are scheduled to host linebackers David Harris of Michigan and Jon Beason of Miami, running back Michael Bush (Louisville), and cornerbacks Leon Hall (Michigan), Josh Wilson (Maryland), and Daymeion Hughes (California).

Packers re-sign DT Cole to one-year dealAssociated Press

MILWAUKEE -- The Green Bay Packers have re-signed defensive tackle Colin Cole to a one-year deal, agent Neil Cornrich said Thursday.

    Cole

Cole played in 15 games for the Packers last season, making 53 tackles with one sack and one forced fumble. Cornrich said the Packers like the 6-foot-1, 315-pound Cole's combination of size and strength.

"As his confidence has increased with playing time, he's got a great future in this league," Cornrich said.

Cornrich said Cole is participating in the Packers' offseason workouts in Green Bay, a voluntary program encouraged by Packers coach Mike McCarthy.

    Terms were not released.

Browns join Dolphins, Lions as Chief trade partnersESPN.com news services

PHOENIX -- The Cleveland Browns are the latest entrants into the Trent Green sweepstakes.

    Green

The Kansas City Star has reported that Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson said he was approached Wednesday at the conclusion of the NFL meetings by his Browns counterpart, Phil Savage.

"We agreed to talk some more later this week or the first of next week," Peterson said. "He said he wants to talk some more with his head coach and his offensive coordinator. But he did ask whether this thing was over with. I said, 'No, not at all.'

"Cleveland would make sense to me because Trent played very well against them last year."

The Chiefs also have talked with the Dolphins and Lions about a trade for Green, the Chiefs' starting quarterback the past six seasons. Green missed the first half of last season because of a severe concussion and played poorly after his return.

The Chiefs have Damon Huard and Brodie Croyle competing to be their starting quarterback. The Chiefs have said Green would be welcome to return and compete for the job as well if he isn't traded, but Green would likely balk at that notion.

The Browns have no established, veteran quarterback. They used two young prospects, Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson, at quarterback last season.

Green had his best game of the season when the Chiefs played in Cleveland in early December. He had season highs in completions (24), completion percentage (75), yards (297) and touchdowns (four) but still couldn't prevent the Chiefs from losing 31-28 in overtime.

Peterson huddled with Lions general manager Matt Millen at the meetings in Arizona but never talked with Miami's Randy Mueller.

Green has told the Chiefs that Miami is his preference. The Chiefs and Dolphins have exchanged trade offers but were far apart: The Chiefs asked for a second-round pick, and the Dolphins countered with a seventh-round choice.
