Yea, he didn't do the feds' bidding.
He didn't comply with the feds bidding, and he was prosecuted.
yes derp, people are still subject to federal law. if you violate a federal law, you will be prosecuted for it. if you refuse to comply with the ruling of a federal judge, you can be convicted of criminal intent.
arpaio and his department were racially profiling and targeting, and detaining latinos without su ion of any crimes committed. those actions were violations of the 4th/14th amendments and the civil rights act. the anti-commandeering rule that SCOTUS handed down said that states cant be forced to act of behalf of the federal government. it doesnt say that state actors are not subject to federal law
the point is that states cannot be compelled to do the federal government's job for them. so if sheriff joe was convicted of a federal offense, the US government cannot mandate the arizona state police to arrest him, have the arizona criminal courts try him, and have him stay in arizona state prisons.

federal law still exists, and you cant just go around breaking it. otherwise you will be dealt with federally. whether thats ICE detaining/deporting an illegal immigrant, or sheriff joe being convicted of criminal contempt
but states cant be called on by the federal government to go around enforcing their laws for them. so the federal government couldnt force the state of arizona to arrest, try, convict, and imprison joe for violating federal law. nor can they force state governments to work with ICE for immigration purposes.
ICE is still free to go into any "sanctuary state" and detain illegal immigrants. the states just dont have to use their resources to cooperate
