AliKhan, who was appointed to the federal bench by President Joe Biden, said the executive order appeared on its face to violate the First Amendment’s protections of free speech and association and the Fifth Amendment’s guarantee of due process. She also said it represented a more fundamental effort by the Trump administration to control which clients and causes lawyers choose to represent.“This immensely oppressive power threatens the very foundations of legal representation in this country,” she said.
AliKhan is the latest federal judge to block an order from Trump targeting law firms connected to the Democratic Party or investigations into him. Last month, judges blocked similar orders against the law firms Perkins Coie, Jenner & Block and WilmerHale.
