Now I'll bet that's a temporary change, because of the displaced sea water. It it is a permanent change, I'm not sure i understand the physics that would allow that without the earth shrinking a tiny bit.

I'm assuming that's 1.6 microseconds per day. It would take 1712 years for a second.

It's not a temporary change by the way of the quake. The reason the day shortens is due to the shifting faults actually moving a significant portion of the Earth's crust downward. This gives the Earth more central mass, and ever so slightly increases rotational speed, like pulling your limbs inward while spinning in a chair.

However, this adjustment will soon be lost because the gravity of the moon pulling on the rotation of the Earth actually causes the days to lengthen by a dozen or so microseconds per year.

After seeing more footage, Japan is extremely fortunate that the main tsunami was not any larger, or it would have given people nowhere to go for safety except inland.
